A transcription factor STOP1-centered pathway coordinates ammonium and phosphate acquisition in Arabidopsis.

Phosphorus (P) is an indispensable macronutrient required for plant growth and development. Natural phosphate (Pi) reserves are finite, and a better understanding of Pi utilization by crops is therefore vital for worldwide food security. Ammonium has long been known to enhance Pi acquisition efficiency in agriculture; however, the molecular mechanisms coordinating Pi nutrition and ammonium remains unclear. Here, we reveal that ammonium is a novel initiator that stimulates the accumulation of a key regulatory protein, STOP1, in the nuclei of Arabidopsis root cells under Pi deficiency. We show t

Edible Mushrooms: A Comprehensive Review on Bioactive Compounds with Health Benefits and Processing Aspects.

Mushrooms are well-known functional foods due to the presence of a huge quantity of nutraceutical components. These are well recognized for their nutritional importance such as high protein, low fat, and low energy contents. These are rich in minerals such as iron, phosphorus, as well as in vitamins like riboflavin, thiamine, ergosterol, niacin, and ascorbic acid. They also contain bioactive constituents like secondary metabolites (terpenoids, acids, alkaloids, sesquiterpenes, polyphenolic compounds, lactones, sterols, nucleotide analogues, vitamins, and metal chelating agents) and polysacchar

Identifying lipids tightly bound to an integral membrane protein.

Anabaena Sensory Rhodopsin (ASR) is a microbial photosensor from the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120. It was found in previous studies that ASR co-purifies with several small molecules, although their identities and structural or functional roles remained unclear. Here, we use solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to characterize these molecules. Numerous correlations atypical for protein amino acids were found and assigned in the SSNMR spectra. The chemical shift patterns correspond to N-acetyl-d-glucosamine, N-acetyl-d-mannosaminuronic acid, a

Phospholipids of New Zealand Edible Brown Algae.

Edible brown algae have attracted interest as a source of beneficial allenic carotenoid fucoxanthin, and glyco- and phospholipids enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Unlike green algae, brown algae contain no or little phosphatidylserine, possessing an unusual aminophospholipid, phosphatidyl-O-[N-(2-hydroxyethyl) glycine], PHEG, instead. When our routinely used technique of 31P-NMR analysis of phospholipids was applied to the samples of edible New Zealand brown algae, a number of signals corresponding to unidentified phosphorus-containing compounds were observed in total lipids. Dissolved organic monomer partitioning among bacterial groups in two oligotrophic lakes.

Understanding how resource partitioning works among taxa is crucial in explaining coexistence and competition within a community. Here, we assessed resource partitioning among freshwater bacterial groups from two oligotrophic lakes using four types of organic substrates as compound models. Substrate uptake patterns were examined by microautoradiography combined with catalysed reporter deposition fluorescent in situ hybridization. Four large taxonomic groups were found in the lakes, but Actinobacteria (AcI lineage) and Betaproteobacteria (R-BTcluster) dominated the bacterial assemblage. Monomer

Reference ranges for laboratory parameters in ferrets.

The purpose of this study was to establish reference ranges (robust methods) for 51 laboratory parameters in ferrets for use in private practice. Current literature concerning reference values in ferrets is often based on small patient numbers, methods of blood sampling not suitable for practice, and outdated laboratory methods. Blood was collected from the V saphena lateralis of 111 clinically healthy ferrets (age 11 weeks to 9 years; 61 male, 50 female). Age, sex (male or female) and fasting status were taken into consideration. Parameters evaluated included haematological parameters (packed

Effect of sludge type on the fermentation products.

Primary sludge (PS), waste activated sludge (WAS) and a mixture of WAS and PS were fermented at 21 degrees C. The sludge was collected from two plants: the biological nutrient removal (BNR) West End Water Pollution Control Center (WEWPCC) and carbon-removal only South End WPCC (SEWPCC). The PS fermentation predictably generated a significantly higher amount of soluble COD than WAS. WAS fermentation released considerable amounts of phosphate and ammonium. Co-fermentation of WAS with PS enhanced soluble COD production and increased the release of phosphate and ammonium. The semi-continuous flow

Magnesium depletion impairs myocardial carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and cardiac bioenergetics and raises myocardial calcium content in-vivo: relationship to etiology of cardiac diseases.

This study examines the effects of Mg depletion on myocardial bioenergetic, carbohydrate, lipid and phospholipid metabolism. Rats were studied after long-term (12 week) selective dietary restriction of Mg (20% normal dietary intake). Myocardial biopsy samples were examined for glucose 6-phosphate and glycogen to evaluate carbohydrate pathways and for glycerol phosphate and mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and phospholipid contents to evaluate lipid and phospholipid turnover. Dietary Mg deficiency resulted in falls in myocardial glycogen, glucose-6-phosphate, glycerol phosphate, as well as th

Functional Metagenomics Reveals an Overlooked Diversity and Novel Features of Soil-Derived Bacterial Phosphatases and Phytases.

Phosphatases, including phytases, play a major role in cell metabolism, phosphorus cycle, biotechnology, and pathogenic processes. Nevertheless, their discovery by functional metagenomics is challenging. Here, soil metagenomic libraries were successfully screened for genes encoding phosphatase activity. In this context, we report the largest number and diversity of phosphatase genes derived from functional metagenome analysis. Two of the detected gene products carry domains which have never been associated with phosphatase activity before. One of these domains, the SNARE-associated domain DedA

On the Ambiphilic Reactivity of Geometrically Constrained Phosphorus(III) and Arsenic(III) Compounds: Insights into Their Interaction with Ionic Substrates.

The ambiphilic nature of geometrically constrained Group 15 complexes bearing the N,N-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-phenolate)amide pincer ligand (ONO3- ) is explored. Despite their differing reactivity towards nucleophilic substrates with polarised element-hydrogen bonds (e.g., NH3 ), both the phosphorus(III), P(ONO) (1 a), and arsenic(III), As(ONO) (1 b), compounds exhibit similar reactivity towards charged nucleophiles and electrophiles. Reactions of 1 a and 1 b with KOtBu or KNPh2 afford anionic complexes in which the nucleophilic anion associates with the pnictogen centre ([(tBuO)Pn(ONO)]- (Pn=

Modelling phosphorus (P), sulfur (S) and iron (Fe) interactions for dynamic simulations of anaerobic digestion processes.

This paper proposes a series of extensions to functionally upgrade the IWA Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) to allow for plant-wide phosphorus (P) simulation. The close interplay between the P, sulfur (S) and iron (Fe) cycles requires a substantial (and unavoidable) increase in model complexity due to the involved three-phase physico-chemical and biological transformations. The ADM1 version, implemented in the plant-wide context provided by the Benchmark Simulation Model No. 2 (BSM2), is used as the basic platform (A0). Three different model extensions (A1, A2, A3) are implemented, simul

Global Change Reshapes Biosynthesis of LC-PUFA in Northern Lake Food Webs.

Global change is altering the physico-chemical characteristics of northern lakes through warming, shifting nutrient regimes, and increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC). These changes are reshaping the trophic structure and nutritional quality of freshwater food webs. To investigate how such environmental gradients influence the production and trophic transfer of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), we quantified LC-PUFA biosynthesis in 12 boreal lakes along a trophic gradient. Bayesian models were used to relate biosynthesis to phytoplankton biomass and community composition, w

Effects of exogenous copper on microbial metabolic function and carbon use efficiency of Panax notoginseng planting soil.

Soil copper (Cu) pollution is a serious environmental risk in the Panax notoginseng planting area. However, the effect of Cu on soil microbial metabolism and nutrient cycling in this area remains unknown. Therefore, Biolog ECO-plate and enzyme stoichiometry methods were utilized in this study to investigate the impact of exogenous Cu (control: 0 mg·kg-1; Cu100: 100 mg·kg-1; Cu400: 400 mg·kg-1; and Cu600: 600 mg·kg-1) on the metabolic function of soil microbial and nutrient limitation in the P. notoginseng soil. The results indicated that Cu100 significantly increased soil organic carbon (SOC),

Employment of pqqE gene as molecular marker for the traceability of Gram negative phosphate solubilizing bacteria associated to plants.

Insoluble phosphorous compounds solubilization by soil bacteria is of great relevance since it puts available the phosphorus to be used by plants. The production of organic acids is the main microbiological mechanism by which insoluble inorganic phosphorus compounds are solubilized. In Gram negative bacteria, gluconic acid is synthesized by the activity of the holoenzyme glucose dehydrogenase-pyrroloquinoline quinine named GDH-PQQ. The use of marker genes is a very useful tool to evaluate the persistence of the introduced bacteria and allow to follow-up the effect of biotic and abiotic factors

Fish stocks as phosphorus sources or sinks: Influenced by nutritional and metabolic variations, not solely by dietary content and stoichiometry.

The study provides a descriptive understanding of when fish (Cyprinus carpio model) are the source or sink of phosphorus. Dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP; PO4-P) losses (51.1 ± 5.9 % of intake-P) increase at excess of bioavailable P (>0.83 g 100 g-1 dry matter, DM fed) or when food (digestible) N:P mass ratio (≤4.4:1) approaches organismal storage threshold (~4:1). This is known, however, even at a sub-threshold food P content (0.57 g 100 g-1 DM) and food N:P mass ratio (7.3:1), DRP losses (57.8 ± 4.5 % of intake-P) may be extraordinary if two indispensable amino acids are biologically insu

Phosphate and potash solubilizing bacteria from Moroccan phosphate mine showing antagonism to bacterial canker agent and inducing effective tomato growth promotion.

Most agricultural soils are facing limited phosphorus availability that challenges modern agriculture. Phosphate solubilizing microbia (PSM) has been explored extensively as potential biofertilizers for plant growth and nutrition, and harnessing phosphate rich areas could provide such beneficial microorganisms. Isolation of PSM from Moroccan rock phosphate led to the selection of two bacterial isolates, Bg22c and Bg32c, showing high solubilization potential. The two isolates were also tested for other in vitro PGPR effects and compared to a non-phosphate solubilizing bacterium Bg15d. In additi

Speciation analysis and formation mechanism of iron-phosphorus compounds during chemical phosphorus removal process.

Iron (Fe) salt was applied extensively to remove phosphorus (P) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Exploring the formation mechanism of iron-phosphorus compounds (FePs) during the chemical P removal (CPR) process is beneficial to P recovery. In this study, the performance of P removal, FePs speciation analysis and the kinetics of P removal under different conditions (pH, Fe/P molar ratio (Fe/Pmol), type of Fe salt, dissolved organic matters) were comprehensively investigated. More than 95% of P was removed under the optimal conditions with pH = 4.7, Fe/Pmol = 2, FeCl3 or polymeric ferric
