Effects of single-modality sensory stimulation on brain function in patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness: a near-infrared spectroscopy-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of four single-modality sensory stimulations on the brain functional networks in patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (pDOC), and to clarify the correlation between different sensory stimulations and the improvement of patients' consciousness level, so as to provide references for clinical treatment and rehabilitation of pDOC patients. METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial design was adopted. A total of 57 patients with pDOC were enrolled and divided into visual stimulation group, auditory stimulation group, olfactory-

Neural correlates of cross-modal correspondence: fNIRS evidence from color-vibrotactile perception.

Objective. The neural mechanism of cross-modal correspondence in multimodal perception has not been fully studied. This study investigated the neural basis of color-vibrotactile cross-modal correspondence using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and combined the neural evidence in multimodal perception with subjective evaluation.Approach. Twenty adults completed a 2 × 2 factorial experiment manipulating visual color chroma (dark or light red) and vibrotactile amplitude (strong or weak vibration). Within different multimodal conditions, congruent and incongruent stimulus combinations

Visually evoked activity and variable modulation of auditory responses in the macaque inferior colliculus.

How multisensory cues affect processing in early sensory brain areas is not well understood. The inferior colliculus (IC) is an early auditory structure that is visually responsive (Porter KK, Metzger RR, Groh JM. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104: 17855-17860, 2007; Bulkin DA, Groh JM. Front Neural Circuits 6: 61, 2012; Bulkin DA, Groh JM. J Neurophysiol 107: 785-795, 2012), but little is known about how visual signals affect the IC's auditory representation. We explored how visual cues affect both spiking and local field potential (LFP) activity in the IC of two monkeys performing a task involving

Role of the Medial Posterior Parietal Cortex in Orchestrating Attention and Reaching.

The interplay between attention, alertness, and motor planning is crucial for our manual interactions. To investigate the neural bases of this interaction and challenge the views that attention cannot be disentangled from motor planning, we instructed human volunteers of both sexes to plan and execute reaching movements while attending to the target, while attending elsewhere, or without constraining attention. We recorded reaction times to reach initiation and pupil diameter and interfered with the functions of the medial posterior parietal cortex (mPPC) with online repetitive transcranial ma

Dissociable neuronal mechanism for different crossmodal correspondence effects in humans.

Crossmodal correspondences (CMCs) refer to associations between seemingly arbitrary stimulus features in different sensory modalities. Pitch‑size correspondences refer to the strong association of e.g., small objects with high pitches. Pitch‑elevation correspondences refer to the strong association of e.g., visuospatial elevated objects with high pitches. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the neural components, which underlie the CMCs in pitch‑size and spatial pitch‑elevation. This study focuses on answering the question of whether or not different CMCs are driven b

The Effects of the StartReact on Reaction Time, Rate of Force Development, and Muscle Activity in Biceps Brachii.

The StartReact test, increasingly popular for assessing cortico-reticular functioning, is a valid method to influence the firing of reticulospinal tract neurons noninvasively. However, there remains limited evidence on how different stimuli employed in the StartReact test impact motor output in humans. The present study tested elbow flexor responses of 33 adults (aged 26-48 years) to visual stimuli only (LED light), audio-visual (80 dB) stimuli, and startle-inducing audio-visual (120 dB) stimuli sitting with the arm supinated in an electromechanical dynamometer. The role of delta phase for temporal predictions investigated with bilateral parietal tACS.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that temporal prediction processes are associated with phase resets of low-frequency delta oscillations in a network of parietal, sensory and frontal areas during non-rhythmic sensory stimulation. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) modulates perceptually relevant brain oscillations in a frequency and phase-specific manner, allowing the assessment of their functional qualities in certain cognitive functions like temporal prediction. OBJECTIVE: We addressed the relation between oscillatory activity and temporal prediction by using tACS to

Cross-Modal Cues Improve the Detection of Synchronized Targets during Human Foraging.

In two experiments, we explored whether cross-modal cues can be used to improve foraging for multiple targets in a novel human foraging paradigm. Foraging arrays consisted of a 6 × 6 grid containing outline circles with a small dot on the circumference. Each dot rotated from a random starting location in steps of 30°, either clockwise or counterclockwise, around the circumference. Targets were defined by a synchronized rate of rotation, which varied from trial-to-trial, and there were two distractor sets, one that rotated faster and one that rotated slower than the target rate. In Experiment 1

Causal neural mechanisms of context-based object recognition.

Objects can be recognized based on their intrinsic features, including shape, color, and texture. In daily life, however, such features are often not clearly visible, for example when objects appear in the periphery, in clutter, or at a distance. Interestingly, object recognition can still be highly accurate under these conditions when objects are seen within their typical scene context. What are the neural mechanisms of context-based object recognition? According to parallel processing accounts, context-based object recognition is supported by the parallel processing of object and scene infor

Improving motor and cognitive recovery following severe traumatic brain injury using advanced emotional audio-video stimulation: Lessons from a case report.

RATIONALE: It is estimated that about 6 million people suffer from severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year (73 cases per 100,000 people). TBI may affect emotional, sensory-motor, cognitive, and psychological functions with a consequent worsening of both patient and his/her caregiver's quality of life. In recent years, technological innovations allowed the development of new, advanced sensory stimulation systems, such as Neurowave, to further stimulate residual cognitive abilities and, at the same time, evaluate residual cognition. PATIENT CONCERN: An 69-year-old Italian man entered our

Effects of Anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Over the Ventrolateral Prefrontal Cortex on Episodic Memory Formation and Retrieval.

In the past decade, several studies have investigated the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on episodic memory abilities. However, the specific conditions under which tDCS affects memory remain largely unclear. Here, we report data from 4 experiments aimed at investigating the effects of anodal tDCS over the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) on verbal episodic memory. We evaluated tDCS-induced effects as a function of time of administration, nature of the memory encoding task, and age of the participants. A robust enhancement of memory performance was only fo

Modulatory mechanisms underlying high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS): A combined stochastic resonance and equivalent noise approach.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) is a neuromodulatory technique consisting of the application of alternating current at random intensities and frequencies. hf-tRNS induces random neural activity in the system that may boost the sensitivity of neurons to weak inputs. Stochastic resonance is a nonlinear phenomenon whereby the addition of an optimal amount of noise results in performance enhancement, whereas further noise increments impair signal detection or discrimination. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess whether modulatory effects of hf-t

Visuo-tactile stimulation, but not type of movement, modulates pain during the vision of a moving virtual limb.

Aim: Evidence has revealed a relationship between pain and the observation of limb movement, but it is unknown whether different types of movements have diverse modulating effects. In this immersive virtual reality study, we explored the effect of the vision of different virtual arm movements (arm vs wrist) on heat pain threshold of healthy participants. Patients & methods: 40 healthy participants underwent four conditions in virtual reality, while heat pain thresholds were measured. Visuo-tactile stimulation was used to attempt to modulate the feeling of virtual limb ownership while the parti

Methylphenidate and alcohol effects on flash-evoked potentials, body temperature, and behavior in Long-Evans rats.

Methylphenidate (MPD) is a psychostimulant used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Most adult ADHD patients use ethanol in combination with MPD. This research examined the effects of MPD and ethanol on flash-evoked potentials (FEPs; cortical responses frequently used to assess neural activity and sensory processing) recorded from the visual cortex (VC) and superior colliculus (SC; a structure involved in attention and orientation) of chronically implanted male Long-Evans rats, and on body temperature and open field behavior. For one group of rats, either saline or ethano

Increasing Valid Profiles in Phallometric Assessment of Sex Offenders with Child Victims: Combining the Strengths of Audio Stimuli and Synthetic Characters.

Penile plethysmography (PPG) is a measure of sexual interests that relies heavily on the stimuli it uses to generate valid results. Ethical considerations surrounding the use of real images in PPG have further limited the content admissible for these stimuli. To palliate this limitation, the current study aimed to combine audio and visual stimuli by incorporating computer-generated characters to create new stimuli capable of accurately classifying sex offenders with child victims, while also increasing the number of valid profiles. Three modalities (audio, visual, and audiovisual) were compare

The Role of Auditory Features Within Slot-Themed Social Casino Games and Online Slot Machine Games.

Over the last few years playing social casino games has become a popular entertainment activity. Social casino games are offered via social media platforms and mobile apps and resemble gambling activities. However, social casino games are not classified as gambling as they can be played for free, outcomes may not be determined by chance, and players receive no monetary payouts. Social casino games appear to be somewhat similar to online gambling activities in terms of their visual and auditory features, but to date little research has investigated the cross over between these games. This study

Deaf, blind or deaf-blind: Is touch enhanced?

When someone looses one type of sensory input, s/he may compensate by using the sensory information conveyed by other senses. To verify whether loosing a sense or two has consequences on a spared sensory modality, namely touch, and whether these consequences depend on the type of sensory loss, we investigated the effects of deafness and blindness on temporal and spatial tactile tasks in deaf, blind and deaf-blind people. Deaf and deaf-blind people performed the spatial tactile task better than the temporal one, while blind and controls showed the opposite pattern. Deaf and deaf-blind participa

Human subthalamic nucleus in movement error detection and its evaluation during visuomotor adaptation.

Monitoring and evaluating movement errors to guide subsequent movements is a critical feature of normal motor control. Previously, we showed that the postmovement increase in electroencephalographic (EEG) beta power over the sensorimotor cortex reflects neural processes that evaluate motor errors consistent with Bayesian inference (Tan et al., 2014). Whether such neural processes are limited to this cortical region or involve the basal ganglia is unclear. Here, we recorded EEG over the cortex and local field potential (LFP) activity in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) from electrodes implanted in

The effect of rTMS over the inferior parietal lobule on EEG sensorimotor reactivity differs according to self-reported traits of autism in typically developing individuals.

Previous research suggested that EEG markers of mirror neuron system activation may differ, in the normal population as a function of different levels of the autistic spectrum quotient; (AQ). The present study aimed at modulating the EEG sensorimotor reactivity induced by hand movement observation by means of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied to the inferior parietal lobule. We examined how the resulting rTMS modulation differed in relation to the self-reported autistic traits in the typically developing population. Results showed that during sham stimulation, all par

Am I seeing my hand? Visual appearance and knowledge of controllability both contribute to the visual capture of a person's own body.

When confronted with complex visual scenes in daily life, how do we know which visual information represents our own hand? We investigated the cues used to assign visual information to one's own hand. Wrist tendon vibration elicits an illusory sensation of wrist movement. The intensity of this illusion attenuates when the actual motionless hand is visually presented. Testing what kind of visual stimuli attenuate this illusion will elucidate factors contributing to visual detection of one's own hand. The illusion was reduced when a stationary object was shown, but only when participants knew it
