A-rare-case of h-type tracheoesophageal fistula treated with slide tracheoplasty.

Tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEFs) are abnormal connections between the esophagus and tra-chea and are associated with atresia of the esophagus in most cases. Herein, we present a case of H-type TEF in a young woman which is successfully treated with slide tracheoplasty technique.

Aesthetic outcomes following adipose flap versus fillet flap technique for radial polydactyly: a comparison study.

We performed a comparative study looking at the aesthetic outcomes of using a digital artery vascularized adipose flap (DAAF) for treatment of Wassel type IV radial polydactyly versus a fillet flap technique. Clinical charts and pictures of patients between 2002 and 2017 were reviewed to evaluate the appearance of 16 reconstructed thumbs using a visual analogue scale. Our results showed that the DAAF technique resulted in better outcomes with regard to contour of the thumb than the fillet flap group, with significantly less conspicuous scarring in the DAAF group. We conclude that the DAAF can

[Arthrodesis for the treatment of rigid flatfoot].

In the case of a rigid flatfoot deformity, joint-preserving techniques like soft-tissue balancing and osteotomies do not achieve acceptable results. This is the indication for arthrodesis. The selection of the arthrodesis depends on the amount of deformity, localisation of the rigidity and the general health status of the patient. Isolated arthrodesis can be combined with soft-tissue reconstructions. It is functionally advantageous to preserve as many joints as possible.

[Digitalization and use of artificial intelligence in microvascular reconstructive facial surgery].

BACKGROUND: When using digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI), large amounts of data (big data) are produced, which can be processed by computers and used in the field of microvascular-reconstructive craniomaxillofacial surgery (CMFS). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to summarize current applications of digitalized medicine and AI in microvascular reconstructive CMFS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Review of frequent applications of digital medicine for microvascular CMFS reconstruction, focusing on digital planning, navigation, robotics and potential applications with AI. RESULTS: Th

Nasolabial Flap Based on the Upper Lateral Lip Subunit for Large Involuted Infantile Hemangiomas of the Upper Lip.

BACKGROUND: Large involuted upper lip infantile hemangioma is a challenge for plastic surgeon because of high visibility of disfigurement. To achieve an optimal reconstruction with matched color and texture, nasolabial flap based on the upper lateral lip subunit is used for the upper lip reconstruction. METHODS: Records of 8 patients who underwent upper lip reconstruction from 2014 to 2018 at Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital were reviewed. After flap design according to the contralateral upper lip subunit, nasolabial flap was dissected and rotated to the defect. The donor site was subsequentl

Side-Door Temporoparietal Fascia Flap: A Novel Strategy for Anterior Skull Base Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The armamentarium for anterior skull base (ASB) reconstruction includes a variegate spectrum of grafts, endonasal pedicled flaps, regional pedicled flaps, and free flaps, which are selected to face specific scenarios. The use of a vascularized flap in case of large ABS defects ensures an adequate blood supply. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible role of temporoparietal fascia flap (TPFF) in ASB reconstruction. METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen head specimens were dissected to evaluate the adequacy of TPFF and pericranial flap (PF) for the reconstruction of ASB defects. Th

Simulation-Based Training Models for Cleft Palate Repair: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Simulation-based training is a relatively new inclusion to surgical training curricula, with promises of achieving increased competency while maximizing patient safety. Cleft palate, which contributes significantly to the global burden of surgically treatable diseases, is a challenging repair to learn due to the high level of skill and dexterity required, delicate oral tissues, and limited space of an infant oral cavity. Simulation training can allow cleft palate education to move from an observational to a competency-based learning. Hence, this systematic review presents the models

[Expert consensus on navigation-guided unilateral delayed zygomatic fractures reconstruction techniques].

The zygoma is located in the medial and lateral parts of the face, supporting the midfacial contour. The forward projection of the zygoma and the zygomatic arch expose them to frequent injury. Fractures of the zygoma can lead to displacement of the zygoma and the zygomatic arch, causing facial collapse deformity. For delayed zygomatic fractures, the loss of normal anatomical landmarks, caused by the malunion of the fracture lines and remodeling of the bony contour, makes it difficult to determine the correct positions of the zygomatic bones. In such cases, using traditional surgical methods, i

Four Practical Reconstructive Techniques Using the Transantral Approach to the Orbital Floor Without the Need for an Endoscope.

Fractures of the orbital floor have traditionally been treated through transorbital approaches. Transconjunctival approaches risk entropion, whereas transcutaneous approaches risk ectropion or hypertrophic scarring. The intraoral transantral approach to the orbital floor has the advantage of minimizing the risk of any eyelid changes while providing appropriate access to reduce the herniated orbital contents and restore orbital volume. This article describes 4 plating methods for reconstructing a fractured orbital floor using a transantral approach. Many prior descriptions of transantral treatm

Fronto-Orbital Advancement: Description of Surgical Technique to Complement the Procedural Cognition Simulation in the Craniofacial Interactive Virtual Assistant-Professional Edition.

The surgical treatment of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis is one of the most common procedures performed by craniofacial surgeons. However, for residents and fellows, the high degree of difficulty and complex anatomy may result in slow progress along a steep learning curve. This is particularly important in the context of contemporary academic practice, where work-hour limits and other factors restrict operative exposure and opportunities for trainees to learn. These issues have prompted the development of surgical simulation modalities that, while prevalent in other surgical specialties, have n

Clinical applications of ear reconstruction with Medpor.

To discuss clinical practice, efficacy and surgical techniques for ear reconstruction with Medpor.
Methods: Medpor ear reconstructions were used to treat 19 microtia in 17 patients (including 2 bilateral patients) in Xiangya Hospital, Central South University from January 2011 to December 2015. Reconstructions included 2 patients with one-stage ear reconstruction with temporoparietal fascial flap, 2 patients with one-stage operation implanting Medpor directly into skin pocket, and 13 patients with two-stage ear reconstruction.
Results: After 1-3 years of follow-up, 16 microtia in 14 patients

Dermal regenerative matrix use in burn patients: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Dermal regenerative matrices (DRMs) have been used for several decades in the treatment of acute and reconstructive burn injury. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review of the literature to assess clinical outcomes and safety profile of DRMs in full-thickness burn injury. METHODS: Comprehensive searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library were performed from 1988 to 2017. Two independent reviewers completed preliminary and full-text screening of all articles. English-language articles reporting on DRM use in patients with full-thickness burn inj

About a "New" Technique for Uvular Repair.

This letter is about a recent publication in the Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal titled: "The significance of uvula after palatoplasty: A new technique to improve the aesthetic outcome" published by Elsherbiny et al (Cleft Palate Craniofacial J 2018;55(3):451-455). The authors present the use of one hemi-uvula for uvular repair during primary palatoplasty as their "new technique." The method of primary uvuloplasty using one-hemiuvula was extensively used by different surgeons in south America and presented and published in different scientific meetings and indexed scientific journals since t
