Nasal mucosa and brain blood content was studied by rheographic methods in 100 normal subjects aged 4 to 48, in 184 patients with various types of cleft palate, and in 129 ones with allergic rhinitis. A combined restructuring of the nasal and cerebral blood content was revealed in the patients, seen first of all on rheoencephalograms; other shifts included increased vascular tone and impaired venous outflow.

Regional maxilla hemodynamic changes were studied in 40 patients. After surgical correction of combined upper jaw deformations, the osteotomized fragment showed sufficient blood flow which originated from distal maxilla blood vessels. By 45 days after surgery the blood flow reached its preoperative level. More pronounced changes were detected in the regional blood flow in patients with combined jaw deformations after congenital labial, soft and hard palate clefts. To establish a natural model of sleep-disordered breathing, we investigated respiration during wakefulness and sleep in the English bulldog. This breed is characterized by an abnormal upper airway anatomy, with enlargement of the soft palate and narrowing of the oropharynx. The authors analyzed the results of the rheoencephalographic examination of the cerebral hemodynamics under graded exercise (GE) in 42 normal subjects and 60 patients with cerebral atherosclerosis. During the first three days after trauma a pronounced hypotonia of muscles independent of the localization of the vertebral column was observed. Two patients of mathematical estimation of the clinoid form of the vertebra were proposed aimed at objectivization of the roentgenological information. We examined the effects of progressive hypoxia on breathing during wakefulness and quiet (NREM) sleep in 17 healthy young adults (11 males and 6 females). Ventilation was determined from quantitative measurements of abdominal and rib cage excursions using magnetometers or inductive plethysmography.
