[The social determinants of child malnutrition in Colombia from a family medicine perspective].

CONTEXT: Child malnutrition is a public health problem not only in Colombia but throughout the world, as it increases mortality associated with preventable causes. In Colombia, poverty is one of those causes present mainly in rural areas where one in 10 children suffers from malnutrition. METHODOLOGY: We searched ScienceDirect, PubMed, ClinicalKey, and SciELO for references on child malnutrition, its social determinants, and elements for its intervention in Colombia. RESULTS: The review allowed us to identify that many factors influence this problem determined not only by the lack of food bu

Process Characterization and Biophysical Analysis for a Yeast-Expressed Phlebotomus papatasi Salivary Protein (PpSP15) as a Leishmania Vaccine Candidate.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasite Leishmania and transmitted by sandflies. It has become a major health problem in many tropical and subtropical countries, especially in regions of conflict and political instability. Currently, there are only limited drug treatments and no available licensed vaccine; thus, the need for more therapeutic interventions remains urgent. Previously, a DNA vaccine encoding a 15 kDa sandfly (Phlebotomus papatasi) salivary protein (PpSP15) and recombinant nonpathogenic Leishmania tarentolae secreting PpSP15 have been shown t

Scrub typhus strikes back: Are we ready?

Scrub typhus has struck back, albeit with renewed vigour, impacting areas with previously known endemicity as also impressing newer expanses. It is not surprising, therefore, that Scrub typhus has emerged as a leading cause of public health concern globally as well as in India, but are we ready to take on the challenge? Over the last decade, there has been a global increase in the number of outbreaks of Scrub typhus, be it the military occupied areas or the civil population at large. The innumerable outbreaks of Scrub typhus, although disconcerting, have nonetheless contributed phenomenally to

[An Early Social-Psychiatric Work in the GDR].

OBJECTIVE: In 1966 the Leipzig neuropsychiatrist and psychotherapist Christa Kohler qualified as a university lecturer on social-psychiatric problems in patients aged 40 + suffering from psychoses and neuroses. This paper acknowledges this habilitation thesis in its historical context as an early contribution to East German social psychiatry. METHODS: First the thesis itself is searched for points characteristic of Kohler's approach to social psychiatry. Parallel to that, her views are contextualised with other primary sources from or secondary sources about GDR psychiatry at that time. Final

Leishmaniasis in the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Leishmaniasis represents a major public health problem in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) of the World Health Organization (WHO). Cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis are mainly seen in 14 of the 22 countries of the region. In several of these countries outbreaks have an apparent tendency to occur at around 10-year intervals. In 2008, some 100000 new cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis were reported. Foci of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania major, occur in Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia

Child health promotion in developing countries: the case for integration of environmental and social interventions?

In spite of improving epidemiological knowledge in relation to child health, the challenge of promoting the survival and quality of life of infants and children in most parts of the developing world remains an abiding public health problem, for both the countries and the international agencies involved. Current infant and child health programmes largely reflect western style medical care, with emphasis placed on reducing mortality, and the preventive aspects confined mainly to immunisation, improved nutrition, provision of micronutrients, promotion of breast-feeding and birth spacing. In contr

Livelihoods after resettlement: women's work, collective care, and solidarity in disaster recovery.

This paper critically examines livelihood recovery in the peripheral resettlement sites of Chennai, India, following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Despite the implementation of various gender-inclusive livelihood programmes as a part of disaster recovery, our longitudinal empirical research reveals a persistent gap between formal recovery measures and the everyday conditions required for livelihoods to become gender-inclusive and sustainable over time. Drawing on in-depth fieldwork, we explore how women respond in the long term to these limitations: not simply through individual coping strate

Engaging for change: the influence of civic engagement on at-risk Arab minority youth in Israel.

AIMS: This study examined how an organized civic engagement program affected socially excluded young Arab adults in Israel, who face systemic discrimination, political alienation, and socioeconomic disparities. METHOD: The sample included 132 participants (M age = 20.40, SD = 2.04, 57% women) from the Meidad Enterprise-Social Engagement project. Using a longitudinal pre-post design with repeated MANOVA analyses, we assessed changes in civic attitudes, behaviors, and wellbeing. Additionally, K-means cluster analyses, with repeated-measures MANOVAs, measured civic engagement gains among subgrou

Retrospective on the Introduction of Particle Filters to Eliminate Emissions of Nanoparticles from Engine Exhaust Gas.

The particle filter for most diesels and some petrol categories is now state of the art. The worldwide population is estimated to be >250 million vehicles with filters. The nanoparticle concentration in ambient air is thus reduced in Switzerland to one third of the status of 2005 and worldwide premature deaths by traffic related ambient air is reduced by >2 million cases annually. This success story started in 1995 when SUVA, the Swiss occupation health authority, had to guarantee safety and health in the world's largest railway transalpine tunnelling system, NEAT, scheduled to be built from t

Environmental neurology in the tropics.

We address the impact of the tropical environment on the human nervous system using the multifaceted approach characteristic of environmental neurology. First, environmental factors are examined according to their nature (physical, chemical and biological) and in relation to human activity and behavior. Some factors are specific to the tropics (climate and infections), while others are non-specific (chemicals, human communities and their way of life). Second, we examine the major role of human adaptation to the success of Homo sapiens, with emphasis on the linkage between thermoregulation and

Rolling back the prison estate: the pervasive impact of macroeconomic austerity on prisoner health in England.

Prisons offer policymakers an opportunity to address the pre-existing high prevalence of physical and mental health issues among prisoners. This notion has been widely integrated into international and national prison health policies, including the Healthy Prisons Agenda, which calls for governments to address the health needs of prisoners and safeguard their health entitlement during imprisonment, and the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 concerning reducing inequality among disadvantaged populations. However, the implementation of the austerity policy in the United Kingdom since the re-emer

Food refusal as a protest tool. Hunger strikes in Belgian prisons during the interwar period.

In studies on resistance and protest, empirical research tends to concentrate on collective forms of action, those organised within social movements or by resistance groups. As such, research into the protest tactic of hunger strikes suffers from the same ailment. While there is ample historical study into hunger strikes by the suffragettes or the IRA, the actions of individuals without any connection to political movements have mostly been left unnoticed - although they tended to outnumber the former, especially in prisons where hunger strikes are in a way a measure of last resort. This paper

[Experiences, barriers and facilitators to the implementation of interventions for controlling Aedes aegypti in Latin America and the Caribbean: a qualitative study].

This study sought to describe experiences, barriers and facilitators to the implementation of interventions for controlling Aedes aegypti in Latin America and the Caribbean. A qualitative approach with semi-structured in-depth interviews with program implementation experts (19 participants in nine countries) was carried out. We used a software to codify the data and created matrices to compare them. Based on our findings, we developed a graphic representation of the theoretical dimensions that encompass the barriers and facilitators to the implementation of interventions. At the global level,

Regional Overview on the Double Burden of Malnutrition and Examples of Program and Policy Responses: Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Hunger, food insecurity, stunting, anemia, overweight, and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) may coexist in the same person, household, and community in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The double burden of malnutrition (DBM) is an important cause of disability and premature death, which could be addressed with comprehensive policies such as the Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents. This paper summarizes the main policies and actions aimed to prevent undernutrition and obesity. SUMMARY: Several countries are implementing the Plan of Action,

Marijuana and Cannabinoids in ESRD and Earlier Stages of CKD.

Marijuana is the most commonly used recreational drug in the United States, and legal recreational and medicinal use has gained public acceptance during the last decade. Twenty-nine US states have established medical marijuana programs, 8 of which have also legalized recreational marijuana, and Canada is expected to legalize recreational marijuana in 2018. Advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are chronic conditions with significant associated morbidity and mortality. Patients experience substantial symptom burden that is frequently undertreated due to advers

Paul Klee (1879-1940) as a tragic figure: What the artist learned from his illness.

Paul Klee was a major contributor to the development of modern European art. An ethnic German (although born in Switzerland) and a German citizen, he was persecuted by the Nazi government on political rather than racial grounds because of his allegedly "degenerate" artistic style. Dismissed from his teaching position, he emigrated to Switzerland in 1933; shortly afterward he became ill with systemic sclerosis and struggled with this condition for the remaining years of his life. Many publications have examined the effect of social rejection and illness on his art, but the present study conside

From cutting to casting: impact and initial barriers to the Ponseti method of clubfoot treatment in China.

In 2005, a nationwide clubfoot treatment program focused on the Ponseti method -an effective, affordable and minimally-invasive method- was initiated in China. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and identify barriers to the program. A qualitative study (rapid ethnographic study) was conducted using semi-structured interviews of 44 physicians who attended four of the 10 Ponseti training workshops, focus groups with parents of children with clubfoot, and observation. Several barriers to the Ponseti method are quite unique due to China's size, socio-economics, culture, politics, and health

Lassa fever in West African sub-region: an overview.

Lassa fever is an acute viral zoonotic illness caused by Lassa virus, an arenavirus known to be responsible for a severe haemorrhagic fever characterised by fever, muscle aches, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and, chest and abdominal pain. The virus exhibits persistent, asymptomatic infection with profuse urinary virus excretion in the ubiquitous rodent vector, Mastomys natalensis. Lassa fever is endemic in West Africa and has been reported from Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, and Nigeria. Some studies indicate that 300,000 to 500,000 cases of Lassa fever and 5000 deaths occur yearly across West

Psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis: role of patient advocacy organisations in the twenty first century.

All the psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis patient advocacy organisations are devoted to promoting public awareness and patient education; supporting access to effective treatments and physicians committed to the welfare of patients; working with physicians and other organisations to facilitate development of new treatments; and supporting research for more effective treatments and a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. They have participated in the remaking of health politics in the late twentieth century. This was an era in which small patient support and advocacy groups were transform

[HIV-2 infection in the world. A geographical perspective].

The geographical distribution of HIV-2 is not fully understood. However, there is enough evidence to speculate about the origins and differentiation of this geographical pattern. Foci of infection probably developed in some African countries, such as Guinea-Bissau, Angola and Mozambique, in the 1970s. The decolonization of these countries led to the movement of people, and the virus, to historically associated countries such as Portugal, India and Brazil. In Ivory Coast, a focus was probably created due to the dismantling of the plantation economy, with all its demographic, cultural and social
