Glutathione S-transferase genetic polymorphisms and fluoride-induced reproductive toxicity in men with idiopathic infertility.

Male infertility caused by idiopathic oligoasthenospermia (OAT) is known as idiopathic male infertility. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) and fluoride may play important roles in idiopathic male infertility, but their effects are still unknown. Our study examined the relationship between GST polymorphisms and fluoride-induced toxicity in idiopathic male infertility and determined the underlying mechanism. Sperm, blood, and urine samples were collected from 560 males. Fluoride levels were measured by a highly selective electrode method, and GST genotypes were identified using polymerase chain re

Influence of host genetic polymorphisms involved in immune response and their role in the development of Chikungunya disease: a review.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes and can cause significant pathogenicity in humans. Moreover, its importance has increased in the Americas since 2013. The primary vectors for viral delivery are the mosquito species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Several factors, including host genetic variations and immune response against CHIKV, influence the outcomes of Chikungunya disease. This work aimed to gather information about different single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes that influence the host immune response during an infection by CHIKV. T

Systematic Review of Genetic Polymorphisms Associated with Acute Pain Induced by Radiotherapy for Head and Neck Cancers.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Pain is the most common acute symptom following radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC). The multifactorial origin of RT-induced pain makes it highly challenging to manage. Multiple studies were conducted to identify genetic variants associated with cancer pain, however few of them focused on RT-induced acute pain. In this review, we summarize the potential mechanisms of acute pain after RT in HNC and identify genetic variants associated with RT-induced acute pain and relevant acute toxicities. METHODS: A comprehensive search of Ovid Medline, EMBASE and Web

Dental Anomalies and Genetic Polymorphisms as Predictors of Maxillofacial Growth in Individuals Born with Cleft Lip and Palate.

Cleft lip and palate have a complex inheritance, and 90% of its variation in the population is due to genetic contributors. The impact of surgical procedures on maxillofacial growth is well known, but the interference of intrinsic factors in these growth outcomes is not elucidated. The present study aimed to analyze genetic polymorphisms and frequency of dental anomalies as predictors of maxillofacial growth in patients born with cleft lip with or without cleft palate. From a cohort of 537 individuals, operated on by the same surgeon, 121 were analyzed 2 times, to define changes in maxillary g

Association of Genetic Polymorphisms in Long Noncoding RNA HOTTIP with Risk of Idiopathic Recurrent Spontaneous Abortion.

The clustered homeobox gene family known as the Hox family plays a fundamental role in the morphogenesis of the vertebrate's embryo. A long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), known as HOTTIP (HOXA transcript at the distal tip), has been functionally characterized and contributed to the pathogenesis of various conditions. The current case-control study was undertaken to examine the gene frequencies and shared alleles of the HOTTIP  gene in Iranian participants with or without idiopathic recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). Both ARMS-PCR reaction and RFLP-PCR techniques were employed to detect three HOTTI

Genetic Factors of Teeth Impaction: Polymorphic and Haplotype Variants of PAX9, MSX1, AXIN2, and IRF6 Genes.

In recent research, there has been a growing awareness of the role of genetic factors in the positioning and eruption of teeth in the maxilla and mandible. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of specific polymorphic markers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located within the PAX9, MSX1, AXIN2, and IRF6 genes to determine the predisposition to tooth impaction. The study participants were divided into two groups: the first group consisted of individuals with at least one impacted secondary tooth. In contrast, the second group (control group) had no impacted teeth in their jaws. T

Association of rs662799 and rs5070 genetic polymorphisms with hypertriglyceridemia and atherogenic dyslipidemia in pediatric patients in Southeast Mexico.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Triglycerides are the initiators of the metabolic changes that lead to atherogenic dyslipidemia (AD). The APOA5 and APOA1 genes are involved in the response and metabolism of serum lipids and lipoproteins, where single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) rs662799 (promoter region) and rs5070 (intronic region) have been associated with the susceptibility to dyslipidemia. Until now, few studies evaluate the association of these polymorphisms with the presentation of hypertriglyceridemia and AD among Mexican children. Therefore, the objective was to determine the association betwe

Decreased Susceptibility to Dihydrofolate Reductase Inhibitors Associated With Genetic Polymorphisms in Ugandan Plasmodium falciparum Isolates.

BACKGROUND: The Plasmodium falciparum dihydrofolate reductase (PfDHFR) inhibitors pyrimethamine and cycloguanil (the active metabolite of proguanil) have important roles in malaria chemoprevention, but drug resistance challenges their efficacies. A new compound, P218, was designed to overcome resistance, but drug-susceptibility data for P falciparum field isolates are limited. METHODS: We studied ex vivo PfDHFR inhibitor susceptibilities of 559 isolates from Tororo and Busia districts, Uganda, from 2016 to 2020, sequenced 383 isolates, and assessed associations between genotypes and drug-susc

Genetic Polymorphisms Associated with Vincristine Pharmacokinetics and Vincristine-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy in Pediatric Oncology Patients.

Vincristine (VCR) is an important component of curative chemotherapy for many childhood cancers. Its main side effect is VCR-induced peripheral neuropathy (VIPN), a dose limiting toxicity. Some children are more susceptible to VIPN, which is at least partially dependent on genetic factors and pharmacokinetics (PK). In this study, we identify and replicate genetic variants associated with VCR PK and VIPN. Patient samples from a randomized clinical trial studying the effect of administration duration of VCR on VIPN in 90 patients were used. PK sampling was conducted on between one and five occas

Novel Genetic Rearrangements in Hepatitis B Virus: Complex Structural Variations and Structural Variation Polymorphisms.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes serious clinical problems, such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Current antiviral treatments suppress HBV; however, the clinical cure rate remains low. Basic research on HBV is indispensable to eradicate and cure HBV. Genetic alterations are defined by nucleotide substitutions and canonical forms of structural variations (SVs), such as insertion, deletion and duplication. Additionally, genetic changes inconsistent with the canonical forms have been reported, and these have been termed complex SVs. Detailed analyses of HBV using bioinforma
