Counterclockwise Craniofacial Distraction Osteogenesis for Tracheostomy-Dependent Children with Treacher Collins Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The craniofacial rotation deformity in Treacher Collins syndrome results in airway compression that is not addressed by isolated … wed pretreatment, posttreatment, and end-treatment cephalograms. Airway changes were assessed using polysomnography, sleep endoscopy, and direct laryngoscopy. Bivariate statistics were computed to compare pretreatment and posttreatment measures. RESULTS: Five subjects (age range, 4.5 to 12.1 years) underwent this new procedure; three had previously undergone man …

Severe obstructive sleep apnea is associated with cochlear function impairment.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with middle ear acoustic transference and cochlear function. METHODS: Male individuals with and without mild, moderate, and severe OSA according to standard criteria of full polysomnography and no co-morbidities were studied. Subjects with BMI ≥40 kg/m2, present or past treatment for OSA, with heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, use of chronic medications, and previous history of risk for hearing loss were excluded. All subjects were submitted to full polysomnogr…

Biological and clinical relevance of quantitative global methylation of repetitive DNA sequences in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations. The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) in consecutive patients with narcolepsy referred to our sleep disorders centre. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Among patients examined because of hypersomnia, a diagnosis of narcolepsy was established in 30 patients (mean age 34.1 +/-13.6; 13 females, 17 males) on the basis of clinical features, polysomnography (PSG) and Multiple Sleep Latency Test. Polysomnographic analysi…

Does night work favor sleep-related accidents in police officers?

Several studies of sleep-breathing physiology have suggested that sleep deprivation may worsen obstructive sleep apnea. The aim of the study was to determine the direct effect of night work on breathing variables during sleep in fast-rotating shift workers. Twenty one men - police officers, fast-rotating shift workers, underwent polysomnography on 2 occasions: under a normal sleeping condition after day work and after sleep deprivations after night work. Both sleep studies were conducted within 2 to 3 weeks of each other. Approximately half of the group was tested under control conditions (day…

Patients and control subjects (20 age-matched healthy children, 15 boys) underwent overnight polysomnography. RESULTS: More diabetic patients than control subjects had sleep apnoeas (p = 0.006); apnoeas in patients also lasted longer (p = 0.07). Focal epileptic seizures mimicking sleep paralysis.

Sleep paralysis (SP) is a common parasomnia. The diagnostic criteria for SP, as reported in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, are essentially clinical, as electroencephalography (EEG)-polysomnography (PSG) is not mandatory. We describe a subject whose sleep-related events fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for SP, even though her visual hallucinations were elementary, repetitive and stereotyped, thus differing from those usually reported by patients with SP. Video/EEG-PSG documented the focal epileptic nature of the SP-like episodes.

Sleep Apnea Detection Using Oxygen Saturation During Nocturnal Sleep.

The early detection and treatment of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is becoming an important issue in medical practice, as the conventional polysomnography-based method is not only costly, but also demands high expertise from technicians. In this study, we propose a method for diagnosing SAS using noninvasive measurements of oxygen saturation (SpO2), obtained from a pulse oximeter as the input signal, using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). As a result of 10-fold cross-validation, we confirmed that the proposed method yields an 88.99% accuracy.

[Sleep related movement and behavior disorders].

Movement and behavior disorders developing during sleep or in the transitional state from sleep to wakefulness are mostly unfamiliar to Japanese neurologists, primarily because these disorders are objects of basic research. In addition, the patients with sleep related movement and behavior disorders (SRMBD) show no signs and symptoms in our consulting rooms, and cannot be identified without polysomnography (PSG) attended by trained sleep technologists. Although attended PSG is not widely available in Japan, some kinds of SRMBD ought to be clinical targets for neurologists, and they are the sco…

[Non-epileptic paroxysmal sleep disorders].

Non-epileptic paroxysmal disorders during sleep are a great challenge for the clinician. It is important to know the various clinical manifestations for appropriate differential diagnosis, since alterations in sleep, mostly motor, are part of these disorders. Our paper describes the normal sleep stages and electroencephalographic characteristics and polysomnography basic data. The confusions especially with nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy are frequent and cause unnecessary drugs administered, the emotional burden of the parents or caretakers, which is the diagnosis of epilepsy. We discuss the …

Increased daytime sleepiness and snoring--obstructive sleep apnea syndrome caused by webbing of the soft palate.

A case report is presented of a man with increased daytime sleepiness and snoring due to an obstructive sleep apnea syndrome caused by webbing of the soft palate narrowing the velopharyngeal aperture. The diagnosis obstructive sleep apnea syndrome was confirmed by polysomnography. After uvulopalatopharyngoplasty there was a marked objective and subjective improvement of patient's complaints. The authors stress the importance of sleep monitoring in patients with excessive daytime sleepiness and snoring. Otorhinolaryngologic examination is necessary in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndr…

Comparison of Subjective and Objective Sleep Quality in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

PURPOSE: This study aims to compare subjective and objective sleep quality in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), given the high prevalence of this sleep disorder that can affect sleep quality. METHOD: This research enrolled 195 individuals diagnosed with OSA, with an Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) of 5 or higher based on polysomnography. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire for subjective sleep quality. Objective sleep quality derived from sleep efficiency reported in overnight polysomnography. FINDINGS: An analysis of sleep efficiency showed t…

Polysomnogram Findings and Psychosocial and Academic Concerns in Children With Cleft Palate With or Without Cleft Lip.

Children born with a cleft palate with or without a cleft lip (CP±L) are at risk for sleep-disordered breathing, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). While OSA and CP±L have both been associated with higher risk for psychosocial and academic concerns, their combined risk has been understudied. This paper aimed to describe polysomnography findings and psychosocial and academic concerns among children with isolated (iCP±L) and syndrome-associated (sCP±L) clefts who had undergone primary palatoplasty. Medical records were reviewed from 2004 to 2022 for demographics, medical history, polyso…
