Microstructural alterations in hypoxia-related BRAIN centers after COVID-19 by using DTI: A preliminary study.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters alterations in the in hypoxia-related neuroanatomical localizations in patients after COVID-19. Additionally, the relationship between DTI findings and the clinical severity of the disease is evaluated. METHODS: The patients with COVID-19 were classified into group 1 (total patients, n = 74), group 2 (outpatient, n = 46), and group 3 (inpatient, n = 28) and control (n = 52). Fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were calculated from the bulbus, pons, thalamus, caudate nucleus, gl…

A Study of Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Hirayama Disease.

BACKGROUND: Hirayama disease (HD) is a motor neuron disease and occasionally is associated with lower limb hyper-reflexia. Corticospinal tra … findings were noted. Cranial MRI was done and DTI findings at internal capsule, cerebral peduncle, pons, and pyramid were noted. RESULTS: In total, 10 patients with HD and 5 matched controls were evaluated. The apparent diffusion coefficient (7.03 ± 0.27 vs 6.83 ± 0.36), fractional anisotropy (0.79 ± 0.04 vs 0.82 ± 0.05), axial diffusivity (5.08 ± 0. …

OBJECTIVES: A pre-possible multiple system atrophy (MSA) phase, that is, the period between symptom onset and satisfying the second consensu … ients, there was no significant difference regarding parkinsonian, cerebellar features, levodopa response, or Babinski sign with hyperreflexia. Comparisons by autonomic features or autonomic function tests could not be performed due to the small number of patients. Surgical Results of Brainstem Cavernous Malformation Haemorrhage.

AIM: To evaluate surgical treatment options, complications and neurological outcomes of patients with cavernous malformations (CMs) in the pons and medulla oblongata. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 25 brain stem CMs that we operated between 2009 and 2019. We operated all cases in the first month with suboccipital retrosigmoid and paramedian approach. The cases were evaluated concerning their demographic characteristics, lesion characteristics, radiological imaging results, surgical approach and neurological status. RESULTS: Overall, 15 patients had CMs in the pons and 10 …

Extrapontine Myelinolysis and Reversible Parkinsonism After Hyponatremia Correction in a Case of Pituitary Adenoma: Hypopituitarism as a Predisposition for Osmotic Demyelination.

BACKGROUND: Osmotic demyelination syndrome commonly follows rapid correction of hyponatremia. Although pons is a common location, extrapontine locations, such as striatum and thalamus, have been reported. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old woman presented with masked facies, shuffling gait, and pill-rolling tremors suggestive of acute-onset parkinsonism. Hyponatremia was diagnosed following a bout of diarrhea, which was corrected with hypertonic saline. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a giant pituitary adenoma. Hyperintensities on T2-weighted imaging were also seen at the level of…

Predictors of Dysphagia in Acute Pontine Infarction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Little is known about the frequency and the clinical characteristics of neurogenic dysphagia in pontine strokes. In this study, we sought to identify predictors for dysphagia in a cohort of patients with isolated pontine infarctions. METHODS: We included all patients admitted to our department between 2008 and 2014 having an acute (<48 hours after symptom onset) ischemic stroke in the pons, as documented by means of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Precise infarct localization was stratified according to established vascular territories. The presence of d…

MRI measurements of brainstem structures in patients with vascular parkinsonism, progressive supranuclear palsy, and Parkinson's disease.

Magnetic resonance (MR) measurements of brainstem structures have been reported to be useful in differentiating patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) from those with Parkinson's disease (PD). The aim of this study was to determine whether quantitative measurements of brainstem structures on MR images can help differentiate vascular parkinsonism (VaP) from degenerative parkinsonism (PD and PSP). Areas of the midbrain and pons, and widths of the superior cerebellar peduncle (SCP) and middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) were measured in 62 patients with PD, 25 patients with PSP (11 prob…

Specific connections of the interpeduncular subnuclei reveal distinct components of the habenulopeduncular pathway.

The habenulopeduncular pathway consists of the medial habenula (MHb), its output tract, the fasciculus retroflexus, and its principal target … excitatory inputs from the ipsilateral rostrolateral IP subnucleus. The midline central gray of the pons and nucleus incertus receive input from the rostral IP, which contains a mix of inhibitory and excitatory neurons, and the dorsomedial IP, which is exclusively inhibitory. Alterations in the brainstem volume of patients with major depressive disorder and their relationship with antidepressant treatment.

BACKGROUND: Morphologic changes of the brainstem in major depressive disorder (MDD) have rarely been reported in neuroimaging studies, even though, monoaminergic neurotransmitters are synthesized in several brainstem regions. We aimed to investigate volume changes in each region of the brainstem and their association with antidepressant use or the remission status of MDD. METHODS: A total of 126 patients with MDD and 101 healthy controls underwent T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging. We analyzed volumes of each brainstem region, including the medulla oblongata, pons, midbrain, a…

Peripheral nerve injury induces adult brain neurogenesis and remodelling.

Unilateral peripheral nerve chronic constriction injury (CCI) has been widely used as a research model of human neuropathic pain. Recently, CCI has been shown to induce spinal cord adult neurogenesis, which may contribute to the chronic increase in nociceptive sensitivity. Here, we show that CCI also induces rapid and profound asymmetrical anatomical rearrangements in the adult rodent cerebellum and pons. This remodelling occurs throughout the hindbrain, and in addition to regions involved in pain processing, also affects other sensory modalities. We demonstrate that these anatomical changes, …

Apparent diffusion coefficient measurements of the fetal brain during the third trimester of pregnancy: how reliable are they in clinical practice?

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the reproducibility, the inter-hemispheric difference and the reference apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of the fetal brain according to gestational age. METHOD: One hundred and one normal fetal brain (29.4-38.4 weeks) were analysed with diffusion-weighted MR imaging. ADC was measured in frontal white matter (FWM), occipital white matter (OWM), centrum semi-ovale (CSO), basal ganglia (BG), cerebellar hemisphere (CBM) and pons. ADC ratios (fronto-occipital, fronto-cerebellar and occipito-cerebellar) were calculated. Inter-obser…

Histopathology of central nervous system lesions in Behçet's disease.

Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in Behçet's disease, usually called neuro-Behçet's syndrome (NB), is one of the most serious compli … the inflammatory lesion. In chronic progressive NB, similar histopathological changes were noted in pons, cerebellum, medulla, internal capsule, and midbrain, although the degree of mononuclear cell infiltration was modest. There were also scattered foci of neurons undergoing apoptosis with formation of a few binucleated neurons. The most prominent fea …
