[Fleas of the eastern Kyzyl Kum and their epizootic significance].

The fauna of fleas in the East Kisil-Kum includes 24 species. Different physicogeographic regions of sands are characterized by different spectra and number of species of fleas. The greatest share in collections is composed by Xenopsylla gerbilli caspica--the parasite of Rhombomys opimus. In autumn the other parasite of this rodent, Coptopsylla lamellifer, is a mass species. All the most significant and long changes in the number of these species are associated with changes in the density of their hosts' population. The most significant in epizootic respect is the flea X. gerbilli caspica from

[The characteristics of the circulation of the causative agent of opisthorchiasis in the tributaries of the Ob].

Opisthorchiasis morbidity is reviewed in the area of the Vasyugan River, an Ob tributary. Intermediate hosts have been found in 3 settlements situated at various distances from the ostium. The infestation of intermediate and additional hosts with Opisthorchis larvae is investigated. The above data and the results of previous population surveys (establishing infestation and contamination) served the basis for elucidating the nature of helminth circulation on the territory along the Vasyugan River. The role of infected fish migration is discussed as a source of human infection in areas where hel

[Faunistic analysis of the fleas on small mammals in the trans-Aral Sea area].

Materials on occurrence and abundance of 36 species of fleas on 17 species of small mammals are systematized. A great similarity between the faunas of ectoparasites of rodents and predators has been shown by means of special indices. The conception of parasitic field is formulated which implies the phenomenon of community of the fauna of plague vectors parasitic on its potential carriers. Some aspects of the formation of parasitic field and its possible effect the epizootic process are considered. It is established that the similarity between the faunas of fleas from different animals is ensur

Parasites perform poorly at high host densities: an experimental test in the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

The link between host density and parasite population size is well-established. However, while high host density facilitates parasite transmission, it may negatively impact parasites through more intense competition and/or more intense host immune defence. We assessed the performance of individually tagged female salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), an ectoparasite of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), under experimental low and high host density conditions, the latter mimicking salmon aquaculture conditions. Lice at high density exhibit greater pre-reproductive mortality, reduced growth, delaye

Eyes in the sky: Drone monitoring of the largest gharial and mugger populations in the East Rapti River, Chitwan National Park.

Drone-based aerial monitoring can play a pivotal role in scaling up efforts to monitor species at risk. In this study, we assessed the population size, occupancy, and spatial interactions of gharials and muggers in the Eastern Rapti River and its tributaries within Chitwan National Park, complying with national regulations. Using a Wingtra Tail-Sitter Vertical Take-Off and Landing fixed-wing drone, we surveyed a 73-km river stretch during the species' basking period. The drone captured 24,129 photographs across 27 flight missions, covering 702.66 km and 44.68 km², of which 153 contained dorsal

Entomological study of Phlebotomine Sand flies in Maceió (Brazil): 2011-2020 analysis.

This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of phlebotomine sand flies in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil, over ten years (2011-2020). Maceió, the capital of the State of Alagoas, has a tropical climate with significant seasonal rainfall disparities. Data from the Center for Zoonoses Control (CZC) were analyzed, revealing fluctuations in sand fly populations across different city areas. This study identified 20 sand fly species, and Lutzomyia longipalpis - a vector of Leishmania infantum, the etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis - found in 15 Maceió areas almost every year during th

Tick hazard in a Central European country: Mapping Europe's principal tick-borne disease vector across Germany.

The most common European tick species, Ixodes ricinus, is the principal vector of Borrelia and tick-borne encephalitis virus and several other pathogens of public health relevance in Europe. Comprehensive data on tick abundance and the underlying ecological drivers are crucial for developing awareness and control strategies and to assess future changes in tick-borne disease risk. We aimed to provide a Germany-wide map of I. ricinus abundance to aid in disease transmission risk assessment. During 2018-2020, questing tick density was assessed at 83 sites across the whole country by drag flagging

Landscape heterogeneity, forest structure, and mammalian host diversity shape tick density and prevalence of the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis.

Ticks, particularly Ixodes ricinus, and the associated Lyme borreliosis risk, represent key concerns within the One Health framework, prompting extensive research in this field. However, comprehensive studies that jointly consider landscape characteristics, local forest structure and management, climate, and host community composition-alongside direct measures of tick density and infection status with Borrelia spp., the bacterial agents causing Lyme borreliosis, are scarce. In this study, we test the hypothesis that habitat diversity exerts a dilution effect, primarily by supporting greater di

Impact of climate and land use on the temporal variability of sand fly density in Sri Lanka: A 2-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis has emerged as an escalating public health problem in Sri Lanka, with reported cases increasing nearly three folds over past decade, from 1,367 in 2014 to 3714 cases in 2023. Phlebotominae sand flies are the vectors of leishmaniasis. Their density is known to be influenced by context-specific climatic and land use patterns. Thus, we aimed to investigate how these factors drive sand fly density across Sri Lanka. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We analysed monthly collections of sand flies (n = 38,594) and weather data from ten sentinel sites representing three main ge

Test of the negative feedback hypothesis of colony size sensing in social insects.

Social insects can sense colony size-even without visual information in a dark environment. How they achieve this is yet largely unknown. We empirically tested a hypothesis on the proximate mechanism using ant colonies. In Diacamma colonies, the monogynous queen is known to increase the effort devoted to queen pheromone transmission behaviour (patrolling) as the colony grows, as if she perceives colony size. The negative feedback hypothesis assumes that, through repeated physical contact with workers, the queen monitors the physiological state (fertility) of workers and increases her patrollin

Impact of subgroup-specific heterogeneities and dynamic changes in mortality rates on forecasted population size, deaths, and age distribution of persons receiving antiretroviral treatment in the United States: a computer simulation study.

PURPOSE: Model-based forecasts of population size, deaths, and age distribution of people with HIV (PWH) are helpful for public health and clinical services planning but are influenced by subgroup-specific heterogeneities and changes in mortality rates. METHODS: Using an agent-based simulation of PWH in the United States, we examined the impact of distinct approaches to parametrizing mortality rates on forecasted epidemiology of PWH on antiretroviral treatment (ART). We first estimated mortality rates among (1) all PWH, (2) sex-specific, (3) sex-and-race/ethnicity-specific, and (4) sex-race/e

A sterile insect technique pilot trial on Captiva Island: defining mosquito population parameters for sterile male releases using mark-release-recapture.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT), which involves area-wide inundative releases of sterile insects to suppress the reproduction of a target species, has proven to be an effective pest control method. The technique demands the continuous release of sterilized insects in quantities that ensure a high sterile male:wild male ratio for the suppression of the wild population over succeeding generations. METHODS: For these releases, it is important to determine several ecological and biological population parameters, including the longevity of the released males in the field, the disper

Ovitrap surveillance of dengue vector mosquitoes in Bandung City, West Java Province, Indonesia.

Larval surveillance is the central approach for monitoring dengue vector populations in Indonesia. However, traditional larval indices are ineffective for measuring mosquito population dynamics and predicting the dengue transmission risk. We conducted a 14-month ovitrap surveillance. Eggs and immature mosquitoes were collected on a weekly basis from an urban village of Bandung, namely Sekejati. Ovitrap-related indices, namely positive house index (PHI), ovitrap index (OI), and ovitrap density index (ODI), were generated and correlated with environmental variables, housing type (terraced or hig

Analysis of Salmonella Persister Population Sizes, Dynamics of Gut Luminal Seeding, and Plasmid Transfer in Mouse Models of Salmonellosis.

A previously unappreciated link between persisters and the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance has been recently established. The bulk of this research has been conducted in vitro, but some studies are beginning to elucidate the importance of persister reservoirs in both antibiotic treatment failure and the spread of antibiotic resistance using in vivo models. In order to further this research, careful analyses of the mechanisms of persister reservoir formation as well as the dynamics of persister survival and postantibiotic regrowth are of importance. Here, we present a mouse model

Urban villages as transfer stations for dengue fever epidemic: A case study in the Guangzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Numerous urban villages (UVs) and frequent infectious disease outbreaks are major environmental and public health concerns in highly urbanized regions, especially in developing countries. However, the spatial and quantitative associations between UVs and infections remain little understood on a fine scale. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, the relationships between reported dengue fever (DF) epidemics during 2012-2017, gross domestic product (GDP), the traffic system (road density, bus and/or subway stations), and UVs derived from high-resolution remotely sensed i

The spatial and temporal distribution, species composition, and host preference of phlebotomine sand flies in the Bethlehem District of Palestine.

In the Palestinian West Bank, leishmaniasis is emerging as a serious public health issue with incidence increasing over time, especially in the western and the northern parts. This study was aimed to evaluating the effect of altitude on sand fly density, temporal and spatial distribution, species composition, and host preference within and between three villages in the Bethlehem District. The three villages occur along an elevation cline, ranging from the disease-free area of Kisan (KIS; 732-782 m ASL), down to the endemic areas of Arab Ar-Rashaiyda (AAR; 522-568 m ASL), and Al'Azazma (AZA; 47
