[Ethnic aspects of hereditary breast cancer in the region of Siberia].

BACKGROUND: Ethnic diversity of the population in the region of Siberia suggests the existence of different germline mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes associated with breast and ovarian cancer in different ethnic populations, but spectrum of these mutations has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the frequency of the most common mutations BRCA1/2 (BRCA1 5382insC, BRCA1 185delAG, BRCA1 4153delAG, BRCAI T300G, BRCA2 6174delT) in women diagnosed with breast cancer among indigenous people and newcomers living in Siberia. METHODS: We tested 1281 genomic DNA samples for the presence

Barriers to cancer screening among Orthodox Jewish women.

The increased risk of genetic cancer mutations for Ashkenazi Jews is well known. However, little is known about the cancer-related health behaviors of a subset of Ashkenazi Jews, Orthodox Jews, who are a very religious and insular group. This study partnered with Rabbinical leadership and community members in an Orthodox Jewish community to investigate barriers to cancer screening in this community. Orthodox Jewish women were recruited to participate in focus groups designed to elicit their perspectives on barriers to cancer screening. A total of five focus groups were conducted, consisting of

Hierarchical analysis of anaemia deferral in blood donor candidates: the individual in the population perspective.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Deferral due to anaemia is common in blood donor selection, mainly owing to iron deficiency. This study analysed the prevalence of anaemia, its individual and group-associated factors in 335,095 blood donor candidates in the Hemominas Foundation, a public blood centre in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the hierarchical analysis, gender, self-reported skin colour and age were included as independent variables at the individual level. Second level variables included proportion of self-reported white, male proportion, prevalence of sickle cell tr

Epidemiology and investigation of melioidosis, Southern Arizona.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a bacterium endemic to Southeast Asia and northern Australia, but it has not been found to occur endemically in the United States. We report an ostensibly autochthonous case of melioidosis in the United States. Despite an extensive investigation, the source of exposure was not identified.

Coloring the white plague: a syndemic approach to immigrant tuberculosis in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: In this article, we adopt a syndemic approach to immigrant tuberculosis (TB) in Canada as a way of challenging contemporary epidemiological models of infectious diseases that tend to racialize and medicalize the risk of infections in socio-economically disadvantage populations and obscure the role of social conditions in sustaining the unequal distribution of diseases in these populations. DESIGN: A syndemic approach unravels social and biological connections which shape the distribution of infections over space and time and is useful in de-racializing and de-medicalizing these epi

Respiratory infections in Tamariki (children) and Taitamariki (young people) Māori, New Zealand.

The Māori population is young, with 53% aged less than 25 years and with a higher prevalence of both acute (bronchiolitis, pneumonia, pertussis, tuberculosis) and chronic (bronchiectasis) respiratory tract infections than non-Māori. Environmental, economic and poorer access to health promotion programmes and health care rather than specific or genetic underlying disorders appear to contribute to this burden. While new initiatives are needed, we can do better with current public health programmes and building on regional initiatives that have already proven successful.

Thin-plate spline analysis of the cranial base in African, Asian and European populations and its relationship with different malocclusions.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that midline basicranial orientation and posterior cranial base length are discriminating factors between adults of different populations and its potential maxillo/mandibular disharmonies. DESIGN: Twenty-nine 2D landmarks of the midline cranial base, the face and the mandible of dry skull X-rays from three major populations (45 Asians, 34 Africans, 64 Europeans) were digitized and analysed by geometric morphometrics. We used, first, MANOVA to test for mean shape differences between populations; then, principal components analysis (PCA) to assess the overall

Evaluation of an internet diabetes self-management training program for adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: There are inadequate information and support resources available for adolescents and young adults with diabetes. This article describes the pilot phase of an Internet program to assist these individuals who are transitioning to adult-centered medical care. METHODS: We developed an online program consisting of background information on diabetes, goal-setting exercises with individualized feedback, role-playing, group discussions, empowerment activities, and communication skills training designed to improve interactions with health professionals. We provided low-income participants

Is classic Kaposi's sarcoma endemic in Peru?: report of a case in an indigenous patient.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) has been classified in four clinical variants (classic or Mediterranean; endemic or African; epidemic or AIDS-related; iatrogenic or immunosuppression-related). Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), has been found in all these variants. We herein discuss the unusual presentation of a 53-year-old indigenous patient with purplish-brown nodular lesions on lower extremities, and miliary tuberculosis. ELISA-HIV tests were negative and immunohistochemistry (IHC) of the tumor tissue was positive for HHV-8. This is the first reported case in which the presence of HHV-8 was evidenced by me

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting wild birds (Aves) and white-footed mice in Lyme, CT.

Birds were captured and recaptured (20.8% of 5,297) with Japanese mist nets, and white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), were caught and recaught (69.1% of 355) with Sherman box traps during the late spring, summer, and early fall from July 1989 through October 1991 to study tick-host relationships in Lyme, CT. Ixodes scapularis Say, a vector of Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto Johnson, Schmid, Hye, Steigerwalt & Brenner, infested 803 birds (15.2%) in 36 species and 148 (40.3%) of the mice. This tick dominated both birds (94.4% of 4,065 ticks) and mice

Leptospires in wildlife from Trinidad and Grenada.

Serum samples from 894 wild animals (representing 31 species) from Trinidad and Grenada were examined by the microscopic agglutination test for leptospiral antibodies; 198 were positive. These included 39 bats, 88 mongooses, six opossums, 10 peridomestic rodents, 15 forest rodents, 10 lizards, and 30 toads. Thirteen pathogenic serogroups were involved. Thirty-nine Leptospira isolates were reported from mongooses, opossums, rodents and toads.

Identification and study of a poxvirus isolated from wild rodents in Turkmenia.

A new poxvirus was isolated in 1974 from the kidney of a wild big gerbil (Rhombomys opimus) caught in Turkmenia, where these gerbils are wide-spread. The virus resembles cowpox virus and is markedly different from the virus of infectious ectromelia, the best-known poxvirus of rodents. The new virus is apparently identical to other poxvirus isolates made from white rats and Felidae in the Moscow Zoo. Experimental inoculation of the natural hosts--big gerbils and yellow susliks (Citellus fulvus)--produced a severe infection with a high mortality rate. Trnasmission of virus to uninoculated cage m

Some hygienic problems in the production of meat and bone meal from slaughterhouse offal and animal carcasses.

A study of uncut anthrax-infected slaughterhouse waste in the sterilizer of an animal destructor after the prescribed heating at 130 degrees C for 30 min showed that in 17 cases Bacillus anthracis was able to survive. The determination of z-values for B. anthracis and B. stearothermophilus showed that when slaughterhouse waste is cut up into pieces of no more that 50 g weight the temperature at the centre may lie between 120 degrees C for 20 min and 130 degrees C for 10 min for destruction of spore formers. The resulting animal meal is of improved protein quality by this treatment. These resul

Illegal drug use among rural adults: mental health consequences and treatment utilization.

This study uses the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse to examine mental health consequences and treatment utilization among nonmetropolitan and rural adults. The study employs an ecological system perspective, dividing the study population into three groups: nonmetropolitan-rural, nonmetropolitan-urban, and metropolitan-rural. Logistic regression analysis is used to examine four sets of factors related to self-report of mental health problems among drug-using adults, including community level features, family characteristics, personal characteristics, and stress factors. Perceived ease o

Rural-Urban and Racial-Ethnic Differences in Tele-Behavioral Health Access for Medicaid Beneficiaries.

BACKGROUND: Tele-behavioral health (TBH) expanded significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the extent to which this addressed or reinforced existing rural-urban disparities remains unclear, especially in states with diverse and underserved populations. This study investigates the role of rurality and broadband access in TBH utilization among adult Medicaid beneficiaries in New Mexico-a highly rural and racially diverse state. METHODS: We analyzed New Mexico Medicaid claims data from March 2019 to March 2021 for outpatient behavioral health visits. Using logistic regression models, we a
