Maternal Empowerment - An Underutilized Strategy to Prevent Kernicterus?

BACKGROUND: Kernicterus is a common cause of death and morbidity in many Low- Middle-income Countries (LMICs) and still occurs in affluent nations. In either case, the immediate cause is delayed treatment of severe hyperbilirubinemia. In the West, a provider driven "systems approach" has been widely adopted to identify babies at risk prior to discharge from birthing centers with follow up monitoring based on the serum bilirubin level at time of discharge. The situation is more complicated in regions of the world where kernicterus is endemic, especially in LMICs where Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydr

Behavioral interventions for office-based care: stress and anxiety disorders.

Numerous behavioral therapies have been investigated in the management of anxiety- and stress-related disorders. There is strong evidence to support cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in the management of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and social phobias. Adjunctive behavioral sleep intervention may enhance results for GAD, and initiation of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor for GAD before CBT also may enhance response. Several randomized clinical trials showed benefit of Internet-based CBT for GAD, but a

Variation in recommendation for surgical treatment for compressive neuropathy.

PURPOSE: It is our impression that there is substantial, unexplained variation in hand surgeon recommendations for treatment of peripheral mononeuropathy. We tested the null hypothesis that specific patient and provider factors do not influence recommendations for surgery. METHODS: Using a web-based survey, hand surgeons recommended surgical or nonsurgical treatment for patients in 2 different scenarios. Six elements of the first scenario (symptoms, circumstances, mindset, diagnosis, objective testing, and expectations) had 2 possibilities that were each independently and randomly assigned to

Parity effects on maternal behaviour are not related to circulating oestradiol concentrations in two breeds of sheep.

Primiparous females of many species, including the sheep, do not show as competent maternal behaviour as multiparous mothers. In this study we investigated whether circulating concentrations of oestradiol might be related to this response, since breed differences in oestradiol concentrations have been shown to correlate with maternal behaviours. Oestradiol concentrations were measured in plasma collected at 2-weekly intervals from primiparous and multiparous ewes of two breeds (Scottish Blackface and Suffolk) throughout gestation, and maternal behaviour was recorded at parturition. Circulating

Perceptions and treatment of sexual problems.

In this research, perceptions and beliefs which affect the family physician's treatment of sexual problems were studied. A 66-item questionnaire, the Survey of Sexual Problem Care (SSPC), was completed by 68 individuals. Respondents reported that they would be more likely to consult a family physician for the treatment of sexual problems than any other individual; however, few (11%) of those surveyed had actually sought treatment for sexual problems. Confidentiality was reported to be the most important characteristic in persons consulted for sexual problems, and treatment was more likely to b

"The Wolf defended itself instinctively": Shifting responsibility in online discussions on wildlife comeback.

How people interact has a major influence on the intractability of wildlife-related disputes. However, research into the discursive practices employed in wildlife-related debates is limited. Applying discursive psychology, we analyse these practices in interactions on the comeback of wolves and beavers in the Netherlands. We focus on digital interactions that occur on social media. The analysis reveals an overall tendency to ascribe responsibility, not only to humans but also to the animals involved. Participants manage the issue of responsibility through various discursive practices: by means

Psychological Adaptation During Prolonged War-Related Stress in Ukraine: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Civilian populations exposed to prolonged stress, loss, illness, displacement, and other uncontrollable life events demonstrate substantial variability in psychological adaptation. Contemporary research suggests that psychological outcomes are influenced not only by the severity of adversity but also by patterns of cognitive-emotional processing, including locus of control, rumination, self-compassion, and meaning-making. The ongoing war in Ukraine represents a distinct context in which civilians must adapt not after the cessation of trauma, but while recurrent threat, dis

Emotion brokering in Latinx college students: Associations with depressive symptoms and acculturative stress.

Research on cultural brokering (i.e., interpreting cultural norms for others) indicates that some brokering practices (i.e., interpreting language) predict negative psychological adjustment. Recent research indicates that individuals also interpret emotions for others (i.e., emotion brokering). However, the associations between emotion brokering and psychological adjustment have yet to be reported. This investigation is the first to examine the associations between emotion brokering and psychological adjustment (i.e., depressive symptoms, acculturative stress) among Latinx college students. St

Effect of an Eight-Weeks Yogic Intervention on Psychological Distress, Mental Well-being, and Physiological Regulation among Teenage Student-Athletes: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Adolescent athletes encounter compounded academic and competitive pressures that may elevate psychological distress and affect physiological recovery. Yoga, a structured mind-body practice integrating physical postures, breathing regulation, and meditative practices, represents a potentially accessible strategy for supporting psychological well-being and selected physiological indices in youth sport contexts. To evaluate the effects of an eight-week structured yoga intervention on psychological distress, mental well-being, and physiological regulation in competitive teenage athletes. Eighty-ei

Dyadic emotional and behavioral experiences in pediatric leukaemia: An interpretative phenomenological analysis of parent-child dynamics in Pakistan.

PURPOSE: Pediatric leukaemia disrupts children's emotional development and places sustained psychological demands on parents. In Pakistan, formal psychological rehabilitation services remain limited, and little is known about how emotional coping unfolds within parent-child relationships during illness. This study aims to explore the lived emotional and behavioral experiences of children with leukaemia and their parents using a dyadic interpretative framework. METHODS: An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was conducted with 15 parent-child dyads recruited from the pediatric oncol

Psychological Vulnerability to Perinatal Depression: A Longitudinal Mediation Model.

Perinatal depression (PD) is a significant mental health concern affecting women during pregnancy (antenatal depression, AD) and postpartum (postpartum depression, PPD). The association between AD and PPD is well established, with AD serving as a risk factor for PPD. Additionally, a history of depression and neuroticism have been identified as key vulnerability factors. However, the role of neuroticism remains controversial in the scientific literature, with some studies suggesting it is a stable predictor of depression, while others propose it may exhibit fluctuations in response to life even

Age-dependent mechanisms of exercise in the treatment of depression: a comprehensive review of physiological and psychological pathways.

Depression has become one of the most common mental disorders in the world. The rising incidence rate and disability rate pose a serious challenge to public health and socio-economic development. Traditional medication and psychotherapy are positive, but they often come with limitations such as side effects, poor compliance, and resource constraints, which highlights the urgent need for more proactive and sustainable non pharmacological interventions. We mainly explored the physiological and psychological mechanisms of exercise in alleviating depression in different age groups. In particular,
