M-A, M-B and M-C are autoantibodies to mitochondrial proteins frequently found in primary biliary cirrhosis. To study the characteristics and specificities and to isolate antigens reacting with the autoantibodies a sensitive assay (ELISA) was established. Serum specimens from 53 patients with silicosis were examined for the presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA), rheumatoid factor (RF), immunoglobulins, and immune complexes. These humoral immunologic parameters were compared with radiographic changes and pulmonary function studies. No attempt has been made to give a complete review of the value of bloodmeal identifications of haematophagous arthropods in relation to the epidemiology of disease but rather to choose certain topics of current interest. A brief review of the current techniques for bloodmeal identification is given with particular reference to recent studies on mosquitoes and sandflies using the haemagglutination inhibition test. New data on mixed feeding by Anopheles gambiae (a mixture of species B and C) collected in Ethiopia confirm the earlier work with A. sacharovi that interrupted feeding is important.

Antisera were prepared in rabbits against the human pathogenic yeast Sporothrix schenckii (strain 1099.12) grown at two different temperatures (25 degrees and 37 degrees). Myoglobin was identified in the serum of 11 of 21 patients after myocardial infarction by a sensitive specific complement fixation technic. This method allowed detection of as little as 0.03 mug of myoglobin. The assay tended to underestimate small concentrations of myoglobin due to serum interference. Myoglobinuria occurred with myoglobinemia but did not reflect the level of myoglobinemia or the duration of elevated serum levels. Larger amounts of myoglobin, 0.4 mug/ml or greater, were found in patients with severe infarctions, three of four of whom died as a result of this illness.
