BACKGROUND: Child Health Days have been implemented since the early 2000s in a number of sub-Saharan African countries with support from UNICEF and other development partners with the aim to reduce child morbidity and mortality.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of Child Health Days on preventive public health intervention coverage, and possible trade-offs of Child Health Days with facility-based health systems coverage, in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: Data were assembled and analyzed from population-based sample surveys and administrative records and from local government sources, from six

Background/Objectives: Vaccination represents a significant achievement of public health and should be regarded not only as a protective measure against infectious diseases but also an active preventive intervention and a component of health promotion. Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed vaccination coverage among adults aged ≥60 years who attended a Primary Health Care Center during a predefined period of at least two months (November-December 2025) in a rural area of Crete, Greece, and examined determinants of immunization, including demographic, clinical, psychosocial, and health s

BACKGROUND: Utilization of antenatal care (ANC) services has increased over the past two decades. Continued gains in maternal and newborn health will require an understanding of both access and quality of ANC services. We linked health facility and household survey data to examine the quality of service provision for five ANC interventions across health facilities in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: Using data from 20 nationally representative health facility assessments - the Service Provision Assessment (SPA) and the Service Availability and Readiness Assessment (SARA), we estimated facility le

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular mortality has worsened among rural adults compared with urban counterparts over recent decades. Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollment is increasing in rural areas, yet its impact on access and affordability for high-risk cardiovascular populations remains unclear. This study evaluated differences in health care access, preventive care, and affordability barriers between rural adults with cardiometabolic conditions enrolled in MA versus traditional Medicare.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed using 2021 to 2022 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey data. Mu

Global child health is at an inflection point. Under-five mortality has fallen substantially over recent decades, yet progress is slowing and preventable deaths and disability remain concentrated in low- and middle-income countries. As mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases and other infections declines, birth defects and other surgically treatable conditions account for an increasing share of the residual burden. For many children, access to timely, safe and affordable surgical, anesthesia and perioperative care is the difference between survival, disability and death. Yet these services

Kidney failure, defined as end-stage kidney disease requiring kidney replacement therapy, is a public health concern that disproportionately affects indigenous peoples around the world. Despite advancements in medical technologies and preventive public health interventions in kidney care, indigenous peoples continue to face significant barriers that limit their access to care. These barriers include limited availability of kidney care services in remote areas, cultural and language obstacles, systemic racism, low health literacy, geographic isolation, and mistrust in health care systems. We examine the resource implications of two potential health services aimed at preventing congenital toxoplasmosis: a screening service involving serological surveillance for toxoplasma infection in pregnant women and its prophylactic treatment; and a health education campaign to help pregnant women avoid acquiring toxoplasma infection, through advice about special precautions regarding hygiene. Measuring the costs and benefits of prevention is complicated by uncertainty of the incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis in the United Kingdom, the extent of its harmful manifestations--mental and vis

Genetic screening and testing has been shown to be medically and emotionally beneficial for patients with a personal history or strong family history of breast, ovarian, and/or colorectal cancer. Gynecologic oncologists increasingly utilize genetic screening to modify their care and treatment plans of patients and their offspring based on inherited susceptibility to cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) developed specific criteria that consider the medical, psychosocial, and ethical ramifications of genetic counseling of high-risk individuals. Genetic counseling and screenin

Lifestyle change is an area in which the medical practitioner has a great deal to offer: to high-risk patients and to individuals generally. The evidence supporting the cardiovascular health benefits of lifestyle change comes from a variety of scientific sources. While the recent large-scale intervention studies have not always had unequivocal outcomes, on balance, the epidemiological evidence points to the central importance of lifestyle change in reducing CVD risk. Recently the United States Preventive Services Task Force22 has published guidelines on lifestyle change and other interventions

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) constitute a significant public health concern, with an increasing incidence in recent years. The management of these infections among the adolescent population represents a current challenge and should be based in comprehensive educational interventions (such as access to comprehensive sexuality education from early childhood and specialized training in sexual health for health care professionals), preventive strategies (including access to vaccination, implementation of pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis programs, and organized STI screening initiatives

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and mental retardation in the United States (1). To reduce alcohol exposure to the developing fetus and to modify health-related behaviors, public health professionals and policy makers require effective methodologies to identify at-risk populations and develop strategies for preventing this problem. In Alaska, the prevalence of FAS is higher than the national average (2). Because of the need for information to assist in planning prevention programs, identifying training needs for service providers, and monitoring cha

During the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak, health services in Liberia collapsed. Health care facilities could not support effective infection prevention and control (IPC) practices to prevent Ebola virus disease (EVD) transmission necessitating their closure. This report describes the process by which health services and infrastructure were recovered in the public hospital in Monrovia, Liberia. The authors conducted an assessment of the existing capacity for health care provision, including qualitative interviews with community members, record reviews in Ebola treatment units, and phone calls to hea

Integrated behavioral health care has advanced from simple service colocation to a coordinated, system-wide approach that connects behavioral health, primary care, emergency medicine, social services, and community support. Health systems increasingly rely on partnerships to address the complex medical and social needs driving population health outcomes. The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD (The Harris Center) illustrates this evolution, operating as a comprehensive population health partner that serves nearly 90,000 individuals annually across Harris County. Through deep integration wi

BACKGROUND: A service coverage index has recently been proposed to monitor progress towards universal health coverage (UHC), and baseline results for 2015 are available. However, evidence on equity in that progress is scarce. The service coverage index did not consider services for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), a group of preventable diseases defined by WHO member states on the basis of the disproportionate burden they place on their poorest, remotest, and otherwise most marginalised communities. Because of the much-needed equity lens that it could provide, NTD service coverage should no

Immigrants face challenges in navigating complex policies that govern access to health care, shelter, food, and clean water, resulting in profound effects on health care outcomes, including increased risk of preterm births and decreased access to preventive health services. These disparities are further exacerbated when immigration policies result in mass detention, incarceration, and deportation, leading to profound trauma among undocumented immigrants and their communities. Obstetrician-gynecologists and other reproductive health care professionals should be prepared to practice immigration-…
