Feasibility of intracranial surgery in the primate fetus. Model and surgical principles.

A research model for intracranial surgery in the primate fetus was developed and tested in 10 timed-pregnant rhesus monkeys. With general anesthesia and sterile surgical technique, a laparotomy followed by a lower uterine segment hysterotomy was performed at a site avoiding the placenta. The amnion was opened carefully by use of the operative microscope and the fetal head was exposed. A scalp incision was made over the frontal region and a small craniectomy and cortical incision were carried out. In three of the fetuses, ventricular shunts were also placed. A layered closure was performed and

Role of endogenous opiates in hypoxic ventilatory response in the newborn primate.

The effects of opiate receptor antagonism by naltrexone hydrochloride on the biphasic hypoxic ventilatory response in the infant Macaca nemestrina have been investigated. Minute ventilation, tidal volume, and respiratory frequency were measured in six animals from timed gestations before and during inhalation of a hypoxic gas mixture. All studies were completed in non-rapid-eye-movement sleep. Arterial blood gases were obtained during each stimulus period. All animals demonstrated the typical biphasic ventilatory response to acute moderate-severe hypoxemia. After the administration of naltrexo

Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA of the primate malarial parasite Plasmodium knowlesi.

Restriction analyses and DNA/DNA hybridisation of parasite DNA isolated from monkeys infected with the malarial parasite Plasmodium knowlesi has permitted unambiguous identification of the nuclear DNA of this species. Its (G+C) content, as determined by estimations of buoyant density as well as by direct analysis, is about 38%, essentially indistinguishable from that of its primate laboratory host, and grossly different from that of the major human malaria parasite, P. falciparum, which has a (G+C) content of approx. 19%. In addition, gradient fractionation of total P. knowlesi DNA revealed a

Effects of vasopressin on cardiac output and its distribution in the subhuman primate.

The effects of vasopressin, when administered as intravenous bolus injections and infusions, on cardiac output and the distribution of blood … lly significant change in renal blood flow. On the assumption that comparable responses exist among primates, these data support the clinical use of vasopressin to control gastrointestinal hemorrhage and to offer a probably ideal dose and route of administration.

Single cell studies of the primate putamen. I. Functional organization.

In order to clarify the functional organization of the putamen and the nature of sensory inputs to this structure we studied the relation of single cell activity to active movements and somatosensory stimulation in the awake primate. Neurons (N = 707) were categorized on the basis of their relation to active movements or responses to sensory stimulation of individual body parts. 38% of neurons studied were related to the arm, 9% to the leg, 11% to the mouth or face, and 3% to axial portions of the body. The remaining neurons exhibited non-specific activation which could not be confidently loca

Renal effects of volume expansion in the renal-denervated nonhuman primate.

Experiments were performed to determine the role of renal nerves in mediating the renal excretory effects of volume expansion in the nonhuman primate. Male Macaca fascicularis monkeys underwent chronic bilateral renal denervation or sham surgery. After a 1- to 2-wk recovery period, each animal was anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium and volume expanded 20% of estimated blood volume. Two types of volume expansion were used, a hemodilutional expansion using 6% dextran in isotonic saline and an isohemic expansion using each monkey's own blood that had previously been withdrawn in exchange for

Primate ocular blood flow following contiguous recti tenotomy.

Tenotomy of the medial and superior recti resulted in decreased blood flow to only the superior quadrant of the unit iris, ciliary body with processes (ICBCP). Blood flow to the medial, lateral, and inferior quadrants of the ICBCP was maintained. These data support the contention that tenotomy initiates a compensatory increase in medial quadrant blood flow, probably via the medial long posterior ciliary artery. The superior quadrant appears to be the least protected from ischemia immediately following recti tenotomy.

Development and larval morphology of Loa loa in experimental primate hosts.

Experimental infections with Loa loa were established in laboratory primates by inoculation of third-stage larvae recovered from either Chrysops silacea infected after engorging on a human volunteer with loiasis, or Chrysops atlanticus infected after blood feeding on experimentally infected primates. The third molt occurred at 16 to 20 days postinoculation of infective larvae, and the fourth at about 50 days. Early larval development was characterized by rapid growth and marked differentiation of the reproductive systems. Differences in the body's growth rate between the sexes were seen as ear…

The early development of the nervous system in staged insectivore and primate embryos.

The early development of the nervous system was studied in stage embryos of hemicentetes semispinosus, Microcebus murinus, Alouatta seniculus, Cebus appella, Cebus albifrons, macaca mulatta, and Homo sapiens. The specimens were assigned to Carnegie stages 11-13. Serial transverse sections were examined and graphic reconstructions were prepared. The early development of the neural tube is basically similar in all the species investigated but differences in detail are noticeable. The mesencephalic flexure serves in all cases as a landmark for malpighi's tripartite subdivision of the brain. The n

Experimental Chagas disease in a South American primate (Cebus sp).

Two year old Cebus sp monkeys were infected with the Argentine strain of T. cruzi by the conjuctival route employing metacyclic forms of the parasite, obtained from dejecta of T. infectans. Both animals developed parasitemia detected by xenodiagnosis, without any overt acute disease, and with serological conversion. After 9-10 months of infection, both animals developed significant ECG abnormalities. One animal died spontaneously and the other was sacrificed. At necropsy, both animals presented significant megacolon. Severe thinning of the intestinal wall was observed without inflammatory lesi

Aggravation of atherosclerosis by hypertension in a subhuman primate model with coarctation of the aorta.

The interrelationships between hypertension and atherosclerosis were investigated in a subhuman primate model (cynomolgus monkey) with hypertension produced by surgically coarcting the miathoracic aorta. The hypertensive coarcted monkey fed a low cholesterol diet for 6 months did not develop complicating atherosclerosis but did develop focal intimal lesions as well as marked thickening of the musculoelastic media of both the large and small arteries. Fibrocellular thickening of the intima and media occurred in the vessels proximal to the coarctation but not distal to the coarctation suggesting

Retinal and optic nerve atrophy induced by intravitreous vincristine in the primate.

Vincristine is known to be toxic to neural tissue, where it is thought to react with microtubules and impair axonal transport. Intravitreous vincristing-induced changes of the retina have been reported to be reversible after 10 micrograms. In the present study, the effects of 0.01 to 100 micrograms of intravitreous vincristine in monkeys were studied ophthalmoscopically and by light microscopy and electron microscopy. Retinal degeneration and optic atrophy were evident ophthalmoscopically in two to three weeks. Morphological changes included swelling of retinal neurons, loss of organelles and

Isolation of a primate type-C virus from a lymphomatous baboon.

A type-C RNA virus has been isolated from various tissues of a lymphomatous baboon (sp. P hamadryas). Virus isolations were made by co-cultivating baboon cells from the inguinal and mesenteric lymph nodes, testes, kidneys and spleen with cells of canine or human origin. The isolated virus grew in canine, bat, rhesus, and human cells but not in cells of mouse, rat, cat or rabbit origin. The baboon isolate resemble a type-C virus when infected cells were examined by thin section in the electron microscope. In addition, the virus was capable of providing helper function by rescuing and transmitti

Subhuman primate pregnancy complicated by streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus.

Polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, and glucosuria followed the administration of streptozotocin to 6 nonpregnant and 15 pregnant monkeys (Macaca mulatta) in the first trimester of pregnancy. The diabetogenic action of the drug was also reflected in an induced but variable deterioration in maternal intravenous glucose tolerance and a marked attenuation of maternal plasma insulin responsiveness to intravenous glycemic stimuli. The products of conception were examined in 29 pregnancies. The neonates and the placentas of the streptozotocin-treated pregnant animals were significantly heavier than av

Seroprevalence of dengue virus antibodies among multiple species of non-human primates in Senegal suggests that sylvatic dengue virus is maintained in non-primate reservoirs in this region.

Dengue virus (DENV) circulates in two distinct transmission cycles: one, termed the sylvatic cycle, is enzootic to canopy-living hosts, including non-human primates and primatophilic mosquitoes, and the other, initiated by spillover from the sylvatic cycle, is endemic to humans and anthropophilic mosquitoes. Transmission dynamics of sylvatic DENV in non-human hosts has not been well characterized, and the identity of reservoir and amplification hosts is still to be determined. We investigated the role of the three common species of monkeys in the Kédougou region of Senegal in the sylvatic tran…

Internal nasal morphology of the Eocene primate Rooneyia viejaensis and extant Euarchonta: Using μCT scan data to understand and infer patterns of nasal fossa evolution in primates.

Primates have historically been viewed as having a diminished sense of smell compared to other mammals. In haplorhines, olfactory reduction has been inferred partly based on the complexity of the bony turbinals within the nasal cavity. Some turbinals are covered in olfactory epithelium, which contains olfactory receptor neurons that detect odorants. Accordingly, turbinal number and complexity has been used as a rough anatomical proxy for the relative importance of olfactory cues for an animal's behavioral ecology. Unfortunately, turbinals are delicate and rarely preserved in fossil specimens, …

Unity Brings Mutual Benefits: The Huddling Strategies of Temperate-Living Primates in Cold Environments.

Behavioral thermoregulation is a key adaptive tactic shaped by natural selection and species evolution, enabling animals to cope with variable thermal environments, particularly facing cold challenges. Quantifying the thermal and energetic consequences of behavior in the wild provides key insights into how animals cope with environmental challenges. Our study examines huddling, a typical social thermoregulatory behavior in the golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana), the northernmost distributed colobine primate, using behavioral observations and infrared thermography to assess its
