Reconstruction of Ipsilateral Femoral and Tibial Bone Defect by 3D Printed Porous Scaffold Without Bone Graft: A Case Report.

CASE: This study reported the case of a 42-year-old woman with traumatic ipsilateral critical bone defect of right femur and tibia after a motor accident. Three-dimensional (3D) printed porous titanium scaffolds were innovatively used to reconstruct this challenging situation. The initial stability was safe enough for early exercise and partial weight bearing. The 26-month follow-up showed osseous integration of the prosthesis-bone interface with short-term satisfactory clinical result. CONCLUSION: The custom-designed 3D-printed porous scaffold has the potential to become an effective option

Design and development of a novel 3D-printed non-metallic self-locking prosthetic arm for a forequarter amputation.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb, in particular forequarter amputations, require highly customised devices that are often expensive and underutilised. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to design and develop a comfortable 3D-printed cosmetic forequarter prosthetic device, which was lightweight, cool to wear, had an elbow that could lock, matched the appearance of the contralateral arm and was completely free of metal for a specific user's needs. STUDY DESIGN: Device design. TECHNIQUE: An iterative user-centred design approach was used for digitising, designing and developing a functional 3D-

A novel wrist rehabilitation exoskeleton using 3D-printed multi-segment mechanism.

Wrist rehabilitation exoskeleton can effectively assist wrist recovery from stroke. However, current wrist rehabilitation devices have shortcomings such as heavy weight, uncertain motion trajectory, etc. This paper proposes a wrist rehabilitation robot driven by 3D-printed multi-segment mechanism to realize wrist rehabilitation in three degrees of freedom. We conducted three tests including bearing force, rehabilitation trajectory, range of motion tests. The results prove this exoskeleton can provide enough force and torque, and it can achieve larger range of motion within the same motor displ

The effect of steam sterilization on different 3D printable materials for surgical use in veterinary medicine.

BACKGROUND: Different 3D-printed materials polyactic acid (PLA), polyamide (PA), polycarbonates (PC), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and GreenTEC Pro®I have been considered for surgical templates, but there is a sparity of data about how these materials are affected by steam sterilization. The aim of the current study was to test if and how these materials change morphologically when high temperature, pressure and humidity are applied during the steam sterilization process. The overall aim is to create patient-specific sawing templates for performing corrective osteotomies. After the de

Chitosan-based 3D-printed scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

Despite the spontaneous regenerative properties of autologous bone grafts, this technique remains dilatory and restricted to fractures and injuries. Conventional grafting strategies used to treat bone tissue damage have several limitations. This highlights the need for novel approaches to overcome the persisting challenges. Tissue-like constructs that can mimic natural bone structurally and functionally represent a promising strategy. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) is an approach used to develop bioengineered bone with subtle architecture. BTE utilizes biomaterials to accommodate cells and deli

Talonavicular Joint-Sparing 3D Printed Navicular Replacement for Osteonecrosis of the Navicular.

Pathology of the navicular can be a difficult entity to treat, particularly when the injury has progressed to osteonecrosis. While various nonoperative and operative modalities have been described, the emerging field of additive manufacturing has become a potential solution to this difficult problem in certain scenarios. While these implants have largely been used for fusion in the past, the concept of joint sparing with 3D printed implants is also emerging, and this case highlights a patient treated with a talonavicular joint-sparing, patient-specific 3D printed total navicular replacement.

Novel Geometry of an Extended Length Chimeric Scapular Free Flap for Hemimandibular Reconstruction: Nuances of the Technique Streamlined by In-House Virtual Surgical Planning and 3D Printing for a Severely Vessel-Depleted Neck.

Subscapular-based flaps have historically maintained an unparalleled ability to provide a multitude of bone and soft tissue components based on a single vascular pedicle. However, these flaps are often not thought of as an ideal choice for composite defects requiring extended lengths of bone for reconstruction. The ability to harvest long segments of bone and reliably perform multiple contouring osteotomies is fundamental to long-span composite mandibular reconstruction, and microvascular surgeons are often met with significant reconstructive challenges when fibular free flaps cannot be used o

3D-Printed Surgical Steel Curettes for the Treatment of Perianal Fistula.

Need. The diversity of approaches proposed for the treatment of complex perianal fistulas reflects the fact that no method has yet been shown to be fully satisfactory. We believe the successful treatment of this condition is directly proportional to the amount of fibrous tissue that can be removed. Technical solution. We use a kit of small curettes, of different thicknesses and sizes, incorporating spicules that enable the physician to remove fibrous tissue from the fistula tract. The small size and varying thicknesses of the curettes enable them to mould to the curves of the fistula tract and

Sound Measurement in Patient-Specific 3D Printed Bench Models of Venous Pulsatile Tinnitus.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize patient-specific flow models to be an adequate in vitro surrogate to allow for characterization of pulsatile tinnitus (PT) that affects three to five million Americans. BACKGROUND: PT, rhythmic sounds without an extracorporeal source that patients appreciate, can be caused by aberrant blood flow in large cerebral veins near the cochlea. To investigate the sound production mechanism, we created 3D printed flow models based on patient-specific cerebral venous anatomies. METHODS: Magnetic resonance angiography datasets from two patients with PT were used to generate p

3D printed estradiol-eluting urogynecological mesh implants: Influence of material and mesh geometry on their mechanical properties.

Current treatment for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) involves transvaginal implantation of surgical mesh, conventionally made of polypropylene (PP). However, it has recently become apparent that the mechanical properties of PP are unsuitable, resulting in serious complications such as tissue erosion. In this study, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was chosen as an alternative material, and hormone-loaded meshes were produced by fused deposition modelling (FDM). Filaments containing various concentrations (0%, 0.25%, 1%) of 17-β-estradiol (E2) were prepared by

3D Printing for scaphoid-reconstruction with medial femoral condyle flap.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as an innovative technology to derive a maximum benefit from high-resolution tomography images and virtual 3D reconstructions. The present study describes a novel technique using a 3D printed model for harvesting osteochondral medial femur condyle (MFC) flap to replace the proximal pole of the scaphoid in case of proximal avascular pole. MFC bone grafting has already proved to be reasonable surgical method for this indication. To refine this technique, we introduce a 3D model of the proximal scaphoid pole on a handlebar with anatomic orientation mark

3D printing for tissue engineering in otolaryngology.

Airway and other head and neck disorders affect hundreds of thousands of patients each year and most require surgical intervention. Among these, congenital deformity that affects newborns is particularly serious and can be life-threatening. In these cases, reconstructive surgery is resolutive but bears significant limitations, including the donor site morbidity and limited available tissue. In this context, tissue engineering represents a promising alternative approach for the surgical treatment of otolaryngologic disorders. In particular, 3D printing coupled with advanced imaging technologies

Transbronchial biopsy catheter enhanced by a multisection continuum robot with follow-the-leader motion.

PURPOSE: Current manual catheters for transbronchial biopsy in the lung lack a steering ability, which hampers a physician's ability to reach nodules in the peripheral lung. The objective of this paper is to design and build a multisection robot with a follow-the-leader motion and compare the performance of the conventional catheter and our robotic catheter in the right main and right segmental lobar bronchus. METHODS: A three-section continuum robot with an outer diameter of 3 mm was developed. Each section includes one anchored wire and two driving wires made of stainless steel. Follow-the-

The use of patient-specific implants in genioplasty and its clinical accuracy: a preliminary study.

The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy and clinical validation of patient-specific implants (PSI) in genioplasty. Fifteen patients with chin deformities were enrolled. Virtual planning was performed with the computer-aided surgical simulation method. The three-dimensional-printed titanium cutting guide and patient-specific plate were designed to guide the osteotomy and allow repositioning and fixation of the chin. The outcome was evaluated by comparing the plan with actual outcomes. All operations were successfully completed with PSIs. There was no difficulty in using patient-spe

Progress in 3D bioprinting technology for tissue/organ regenerative engineering.

Escalating cases of organ shortage and donor scarcity worldwide are alarming reminders of the need for alternatives to allograft tissues. Within the last three decades, research efforts in the field of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering continue to address the unmet need for artificial tissues and organs for transplant. Work in the field has evolved to create what we consider a new field, Regenerative Engineering, defined as the Convergence of advanced materials science, stem cell science, physics, developmental biology and clinical translation towards the regeneration of complex tis

Sterility of 3D-Printed Orthopedic Implants Using Fused Deposition Modeling.

The use of 3-dimensional (3D) printing in orthopedics is developing rapidly and impacting the areas of preoperative planning, surgical guides, and simulation. As this technology continues to improve, the greatest impact of 3D printing may be in low- and middle-income countries where surgical items are in short supply. This study investigated sterility of 3D-printed ankle fracture fixation plates and cortical screws. The hypothesis was that the process of heated extrusion in fused deposition modeling printing would create sterile prints in a timely fashion that would not require postproduction

Design of a 3D printed smartphone microscopic system with enhanced imaging ability for biomedical applications.

Portable, low-cost smartphone platform microscopic systems have emerged as a potential tool for imaging of various micron and submicron scale particles in recent years (Ozcan; Pirnstill and Coté; Breslauer et al.; Zhu et al.). In most of the reported works, it involves either the use of sophisticated optical set-ups along with a high-end computational tool for postprocessing of the captured images, or it requires a high-end configured smartphone to obtain enhanced imaging of the sample. Present work reports the working of a low-cost, field-portable 520× optical microscope using a smartphone. T
