Who bought a gun during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States?: Associations with QAnon beliefs, right-wing political attitudes, intimate partner violence, antisocial behavior, suicidality, and mental health and substance use problems.

There was a large spike in gun purchases and gun violence during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. We used an online U.S. national survey (N = 1036) to examine the characteristics of people who purchased a gun between March 2020 and October 2021 (n = 103) and compared them to non-gun owners (n = 763) and people who own a gun but did not purchase a gun during the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 170). Compared to non-gun owners, pandemic gun buyers were younger and more likely to be male, White race, and to affiliate with the Republican party. Compared to non-gun owners and pr

Editorial: Conduct Disorder and Its 70-Year History: Lessons From Hervey Cleckley and Lee Robins.

If Cleckley1,2 and Robins3 were alive today, it is conceivable that they may argue about whether conduct disorder (CD) should be measured primarily with personality traits or behavioral characteristics. However, these strict demarcations may not be needed, or most helpful, for understanding youth with conduct problems. Recently, I proposed that CD might be best specified with 3 personality dimensions including grandiose-manipulative (GM), callous-unemotional (CU), and daring-impulsive (DI) traits.4 These traits are observable from an early age, appear to have a genetic basis, and have distinct

Mental health disorders, behavioral health problems, fatigue and sleep outcomes in remotely piloted aircraft/manned aircraft pilots, and remotely piloted aircraft crew, U.S. Air Force, 1 October 2003-30 June 2019.

U.S. Air Force (USAF) manned aircraft (MA) pilots and remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) pilots and their non-pilot crew form part of the forward-most contingent of airpower. Limited information exists on the incidence of mental health (MH) disorders, behavioral health (BH) problems, sleep disorders, and fatigue among these groups. Incidence rates and incidence rate ratios of these conditions were calculated among all active component USAF members during the period from 1 October 2003 to 30 June 2019. Compared to those in all other USAF occupations, RPA and MA pilots had statistically significant

Norwegian Data on Prevalence, Sexual Risk Behaviors, Sexual Problems, and Sexual Satisfaction in Men Who Have Sex Exclusively with Women, Men Who Have Sex Exclusively with Men, and Men Who Have Sex with Men and Women.

Objective: This study investigates how men who have sex exclusively with women (MSEW) differ from men who have sex exclusively with men (MSEM), and men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) on selected variables. Methods: A probability-based web sample of 2,181 men was recruited. Results: Most MSEM considered their sexual identity as gay, and most MSMW as heterosexual. The MSEM were the most frequent condom users, while MSMW were the least frequent users and had the highest number of sexual partners. The MSEM and MSMW had a lower likelihood of premature ejaculation than MSEW. Conclusions: MSM

The Good Behavior Game as a Universal Preventive Intervention: a Systematic Review of its Long-Term Effects.

The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is a team-based classroom management intervention developed to mitigate disruptive behaviors and promote prosocial behaviors of school-aged children. While the short-term benefits of the GBG are well documented in meta-analyses and systematic reviews, it is less clear for what long-term outcomes the GBG may reduce risk. The goal of this systematic review was to synthesize findings across papers that evaluated the long-term effects of the GBG. A total of 22 papers from 5 original studies examining the influence of the GBG on a myriad of distal outcomes across the li

Experiential Interventions for Externalizing Behavior: A Multilevel Meta-Analysis of Adolescents and Adults.

This meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of experiential interventions in reducing persistent externalizing behavior among adolescents and adults, and whether integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) components enhances outcomes. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of ERIC, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Ovid identified 39 studies, yielding 123 effect sizes (N = 2,323). A three-level meta-analytic model with moderator analyses was conducted. Experiential interventions showed a significant medium effect in favor of the interventions compared to control conditions (g = 0.66). Int

[Effects of environmental change and others' behavior on cooperative behavior and solution preference in social dilemma].

This study examined how environmental change and others' behavior affected cooperative behavior and solution preference of the person in social dilemma situation. Participants in two experiments played an "environment game," in which gradual pollution in environment and reduction in profit rate were simulated. Information on behavior of other players was manipulated: in "free rider" condition, one person was an extreme free rider, and the others were cooperative; in "loafing" condition, everyone loafed. In both experiments, "Bad Apple Effect" was not observed clearly, and cooperative behavior

Interventions for Transition-Related Challenging Behavior in Individuals with Disabilities: A Targeted Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis of Studies Published in Behavior Analytic Journals.

Transition-related challenging behavior is common among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly during changes between activities. Two hypothesized controlling variables-unpredictability and negative incentive shifts-may contribute to the occurrence of these behaviors. This targeted research synthesis and meta-analysis identified studies published in behavior-analytic journals examining interventions developed to decrease transition-related challenging behavior. Nineteen experiments across sixteen peer-reviewed articles were included in the targeted research

Social tinkering is real, but is it enough?

We are sympathetic to the target article's emphasis on directed innovation and coordinated problem-solving as the microfoundations of emergent social order. Nevertheless, the authors' framing of social tinkering as a middle ground between extremes of deliberate design and selection on random variation risks caricaturing reasonable scientific positions and obscuring the question of which processes (one-shot innovation, incremental tinkering, and additional processes like cultural group selection) contribute most to complex cooperative institutions.

Evaluation and Maintenance of Behavioral Interventions for 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

22q11.2-deletion syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a small deletion of chromosome 22. This deletion often results in developmental delays, learning disabilities, medical conditions, and comorbid psychiatric conditions. Patients with 22q11.2DS may present with a variety of behavioral phenotypes including obsessiveness and rigidity, poor social skills, and anxiety. In some cases, the phenotype can consist of destructive and inappropriate behavior including harming self and others. Behavioral difficulties are reported as one of the most challenging aspects of 22q11.2-deletion syndrome for

Integration of experimental functional analysis procedural advancements: Progressing from brief to extended experimental analyses.

Despite the utility of experimental functional analysis methodology, not all applications produce differentiated results. Factors such as interaction effects or methodological inefficiencies may compromise the likelihood of obtaining differentiated outcomes. Various studies have addressed methods to improve the efficiency of experimental functional analysis methodology (e.g., analysis of within-session responding). In the current study, we describe an updated model for progressing from brief to extended experimental analyses. The model incorporates several procedural refinements developed over

Transported Versus Homegrown Parenting Interventions for Reducing Disruptive Child Behavior: A Multilevel Meta-Regression Study.

OBJECTIVE: Children's disruptive behavior problems place children at high risk for oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, and carry a high burden for individuals and society. Policy makers and service providers aiming to reduce children's disruptive behavior problems must often choose between importing an intervention developed abroad or instead developing or using a "homegrown" (i.e., local) intervention. No comprehensive comparison of these interventions exists. METHOD: We performed a multilevel meta-regression of 129 randomized trials (374 effect sizes) of transported and home

Ethical Issues with Posted Patient Behavior Signs.

AbstractThere has been a proliferation of posted behavior signs in the past five years, which are now ubiquitous in both inpatient and outpatient settings and across pediatric, adult, and allied health practices. Named as notices for "Patient and Visitors," these behavior signs identify a range of conduct from clinical noncompliance, use of profanity, and raised voices to acts or threats of physical violence. While these signs offer a tangible signal from the institution's leadership to their staff that disruptive behavior is unacceptable, there is no empirical evidence that behavior signs are

Exploring the Correspondence Between General Correctional Programming and Inmate Misconduct Using a Time-Course Framework.

Inmate misconduct continues to threaten safety and order within correctional institutions. Yet few studies have examined its longitudinal nature. In this paper we explore the correspondence between correctional programming and inmate misconduct. To do this, we draw from Linning et al.'s time-course framework devised to improve the design and evaluation of interventions by considering effects that can occur before, during, and after programming. We provide the first empirical demonstration of their framework using prisoner misconduct data collected from all Ohio prisons between January 2008 and

Vocally disruptive behaviour in nursing home residents in Ireland: a descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Vocally disruptive behaviour (VDB) is relatively common in nursing home residents but difficult to treat. There is limited study on prevalence and treatment of VDB. We hypothesise that VDB is a result of complex interaction between patient factors and environmental contributors. METHODS: Residents of nursing homes in south Dublin were the target population for this study. Inclusion criteria were that the residents were 65 years or over and exhibited VDB significant enough for consideration in the resident's care plan. Information on typology and frequency of VDB, Interventions emp

Resolving Feynman's restaurant problem reveals optimal solutions and human strategies.

In the 1970s, physicist Richard Feynman turned lunch with a friend into a math problem-how to optimize dish selection over multiple meals-but his handwritten notes remained a mystery for decades. Here we present the fully deciphered problem and solution, prove its optimality, generalize it to related problems, and compare the results to human behavior. The optimal policy specifies decreasing thresholds for switching from exploring new dishes to exploiting the best, with thresholds varying based on the distribution of the quality of dishes. We connect these results to the existing psychological

A component analysis of evocative and reinforcing variables influencing challenging behavior.

It is well established that both isolated and synthesized reinforcement contingencies can influence the occurrence of challenging behavior, but currently no method exists for simultaneously evaluating these different causal variables. To achieve this, we conducted a component functional analysis (FA) to examine the evocative effects of sequentially introduced establishing operations and the reinforcement effects of sequentially delivered consequences. Outcomes were compared with a multielement FA that included assessments of isolated functions and, if indicated, synthesized functions. Results
