The indications for surgery in hypertensive intracerebral hematoma are still controversial. The reason for this may be: 1) lack of adequate and comparable data in conservative and surgical therapy from the same institution; 2) lack of adequate close follow-up monitoring over an extended period of time; or 3) lack of proper classification of hematomas for comparison of results from different institutions. A retrospective study was conducted of the 880 children with head injuries consecutively admitted to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa from July 1976 to June 1978. It confirmed a boy:girl ratio of about 2:1, with a peak of 3.5:1 around 7 years of age. The largest number of head injuries was in children under 1 year of age. True congenital peripheral aneurysms of the cerebral arteries are rare and may constitute a special group. The authors report on 16 cases of peripheral aneurysms of the cerebellar arteries; six of them arising from vessels feeding arteriovenous malformations (AVM's). Smith, Glass, and Miller examined the benefits of psychotherapy in 475 controlled studies. Their data were reexamined, and only studies of patients coded as having neuroses, true phobias, and emotional-somatic complaints and who had sought treatment were included in the present analysis. Fourteen patients with benign intracranial hypertension who failed to respond to medical treatment, were treated with optic nerve decompression to prevent the sequelae of chronic unrelieved papilloedema. The failures and poor results of lumbar spine surgery are analyzed in a retrospectively study of 105 consecutive patients referred to the authors for evaluation during 1976. Those who had a history of industrial or vehicular accident outnumbered others by about two to one. Review of histories, physical findings, and myelograms in most of the patients failed to substantiate the diagnosis of ruptured disc or nerve root compression. Many of the failures occurred in thos patients in whom little if any evidence of nerve root compression was found. The indications for surgery were poor in this group
