[The Role of Pharmacists in AST in Large Hospitals and Their Training].

Since 1997, Chubu Rosai Hospital has been establishing the proper use of various antibacterial drugs through the activities of an infection control team (ICT), introduction of a notification system for specific antibacterial drug use, and intervention of ward pharmacists for individual cases. There is no infectious disease department, and we have been working closely with each other on multiple occupations. As an initiative, we established the Nagoya Southern Infection Countermeasures Meeting in 2006 and conducted antimicrobial use and resistance (AUR) surveys to promote the proper use of anti

Use of PROMIS® to screen for depression in children with arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Children with JIA may experience difficulty with health related quality of life (HRQOL). The Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) a patient related outcome (PRO) measure, covers HRQOL domains that include physical function, mental health, and social interactions. During initial use, we found PROMIS identified children with symptoms of depression, sometimes before they shared those feelings with parents or members of the clinic team. We studied the use of PROMIS for this purpose, and to determine what demographic, clinical, and other characteristics migh

Return to work after carpal tunnel release surgery: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common nerve compression disorder which affects hand sensation and function. Carpal tunnel release surgery (CTR) is frequently performed to alleviate these symptoms. For many CTR patients, surgery occurs during their working lifetime, but there is currently no evidence-based guidance to inform clinicians or patients when it might be safe to return to different types of work afterwards. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the return to work experiences of patients who had recently undergone CTR. METHODS: Semi-structured 1:1 interviews were c

Follow-up of Celiac Disease.

Currently, the only effective treatment for celiac disease is complete removal of gluten from the diet. However, patients need to follow a strict gluten-free diet that results in symptomatic, serologic, and histologic remission in most patients. Histologic remission is usually complete in children, but recovery is slower and more frequently incomplete in adults. When remission has been achieved, yearly follow-up is recommended for adults, children, and adolescents. This article deals with conventional strategies used in order to follow-up patients on treatment and aiming to obtain the best cli

Primary Contact Occupational Therapy Hand Clinics: The pull of an occupational perspective.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary contact models of care are an emerging area of occupational therapy practice that aim to respond to the changing health-care landscape. There is a dearth of literature exploring an occupational perspective in primary contact roles, and literature in the broader scope of hand therapy has recognised that occupational therapists' practice often aligns with the biomedical worldview. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the practice of occupational therapists within Primary Contact Occupational Therapy Hand (PCOTH) Clinics from an occupational perspective. METHOD: This et

Helping Families Make Difficult Choices: Creation and Implementation of a Decision Aid for Neuromuscular Scoliosis Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Decision aids serve to prepare families for a meaningful discussion with their physician during the shared decision-making (SDM) process. Although SDM processes have been used primarily in adult health care settings, we sought to develop a decision aid for use in pediatrics. The treatment of neuromuscular scoliosis was selected due to the complexity of decision making when surgery is considered. Our objective was to determine whether this tool would improve families' knowledge and satisfaction while decreasing decisional conflict. METHODS: The decision aid was created using a mult

Pharmaceutical care issues identified by pharmacists in patients with diabetes, hypertension or hyperlipidaemia in primary care settings.

BACKGROUND: The roles of pharmacists have evolved from product oriented, dispensing of medications to more patient-focused services such as the provision of pharmaceutical care. Such pharmacy service is also becoming more widely practised in Malaysia but is not well documented. Therefore, this study is warranted to fill this information gap by identifying the types of pharmaceutical care issues (PCIs) encountered by primary care patients with diabetes mellitus, hypertension or hyperlipidaemia in Malaysia. METHODS: This study was part of a large controlled trial that evaluated the outcomes of

Consulting parents on childhood obesity and implications for medical student learning.

AIM: It is important that medical schools take some account of community expectations for health care when planning curricula. This is particularly important for emerging public health problems such as childhood obesity. The aim of this study was to explore parent attitudes to the role of the doctor in childhood obesity and implications for medical student learning. METHODS: The views of eight mothers and one father were explored through interview. Transcripts were analysed using an iterative process of theme identification and testing against transcript data. A range of recruitment strategie

Nurse-Led Family Liaison in Adult Intensive Care: From Pandemic Innovation to an Integrated Model for Patient- and Family-Centred Care.

BACKGROUND: Patient- and family-centred care (PFCC) is recognised as a marker of quality in intensive care but remains challenging to operationalise in routine practice. During the COVID-19 pandemic, visiting restrictions prompted the rapid introduction of Family Liaison Services (FLSs) to support communication with families. However, evidence on the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of sustained, nurse-led FLS models in adult Intensive Care Units (ICUs) beyond the pandemic remains limited. AIM: To evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of a nurse-led FLS. STUDY DESIGN: Sin
