Optimal visuotactile integration for velocity discrimination of self-hand movements.

Illusory hand movements can be elicited by a textured disk or a visual pattern rotating under one's hand, while proprioceptive inputs convey immobility information (Blanchard C, Roll R, Roll JP, Kavounoudias A. PLoS One 8: e62475, 2013). Here, we investigated whether visuotactile integration can optimize velocity discrimination of illusory hand movements in line with Bayesian predictions. We induced illusory movements in 15 volunteers by visual and/or tactile stimulation delivered at six angular velocities. Participants had to compare hand illusion velocities with a 5°/s hand reference movemen

Mildronate treatment improves functional recovery following middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats.

Mildronate (3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium) propionate) is an inhibitor of l-carnitine biosynthesis and an anti-ischemic drug. In the present study, we investigated the effects of mildronate in rats following focal cerebral ischemia. Male Wistar rats were subjected to transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO) for 90min, followed by the intraperitoneal administration of mildronate at doses of 100 and 200mg/kg 2h after reperfusion and then daily for an additional 14days. The beam-walking, rota-rod and cylinder tests were used to assess sensorimotor function, and vibrissae-evoked fo

Temporal analysis of regional anaesthesia-induced sensorimotor dysfunction: a model for understanding phantom limb.

BACKGROUND: The peripheral deafferentation induced by regional anaesthesia (RA) results in misperception of size-shape (S) and posture (P) o … ion and the onset of K illusions during RA. Our results suggest the involvement of an alteration of proprioception and motor functions in the origin of this phenomenon. These data agree with the motor awareness theory.

Sensory interaction platform posturography in patients with Ménière's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The influence on balance by the peripheral vestibular disturbance in Ménière's disease is studied. The influence of visual and proprioceptive support in balance is evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with recurrent spontaneous vertigo attacks (n = 134) were studied, 90 with Ménière's disease and 44 with recurrent vestibulopathy. A post-urographic technique was applied with the patient standing on a force plate in four test conditions: (1) eyes open, (2) eyes closed on a stable platform, and the same two conditions on a foam rubber platform. Postural sway was measured for

Effects of chronic cuff electrode implantation and stimulation of the rat tibial nerve: ultrastructural analysis of myelinated axons and their microenvironment.

Numerous experimental data point to therapeutic effects of electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves. Stimulation of low‑threshold proprioceptive afferents to motoneurons (MNs) innervating the ankle extensor muscles of the rat increases glutamatergic Ia MN inputs and spinal and muscle expression of neurotrophin‑3, instrumental for proprioceptive afferent‑MN connections. We aimed to examine morphological consequences of the cuff electrode implanted around the tibial nerve used for chronic stimulation which may cause unwanted effects through its long‑lasting contact with the nerve. We addresse

Self-Inflicted Trauma Secondary to Local Anaesthesia in Children.

Long acting local anaesthetics and inferior alveolar nerve block in children can cause loss of sensation and proprioception in a large area supplied by that particular nerve. Similar to the maxilla in mandible also, adequate level of anaesthesia can be achieved in the desired site of treatment by using a short acting local anaesthetic. Early return of normal sensory feedback after using short acting anaesthetics can be helpful in preventing self-harm.

Spinal MRI in progressive myeloneuropathy associated with vitamin E deficiency.

We describe a patient with a progressive neurological disorder consisting of ataxia, loss of proprioception and pyramidal tract dysfunction in his sixth decade. He had severe vitamin E deficiency due to fat malabsorption secondary to chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Sural nerve biopsy revealed a reduced number of myelinated fibres. MRI of the cervical spine showed high-signal lesions on T2-weighted images in the posterior columns, correlating well with the clinical findings.

A comparison of conventional intervention and home-based approach with head-mounted device for cervical spondylotic myelopathy after surgery.

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is rising in the aging population. This study evaluated conventional versus home-based exercise interventions with a head-mounted device in 75 patients. Participants were divided into conventional (N = 36) and home-based (N = 39) groups, assessed pre-surgery, 3-months post-surgery, and after an eight-week intervention. Outcomes included numeric pain rating scale (NRS), neck disability index (NDI), cervical spine range of motion (ROM), neck muscle strength, muscle activation during movement, and cervical proprioception. A two-way mixed ANOVA was used to exp…

A prospective study of joint position sense after anterior cruciate ligament injury, reconstruction with a bone-patella tendon-bone graft, and rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is associated with significant biomechanical and neuromuscular changes including deficits in joint proprioception. While previous studies have assessed joint position sense (JPS) in ACL deficient knees, methods have varied and few have done so with prospective study designs. The specific aim of this investigation was to determine the effect(s) of ACL reconstruction and recovery time may have on JPS. METHODS: In this prospective study, we assess the effects of ACL reconstruction and rehabilitation on joint position sense in a tempo…

A Modified "Suspender-Type" Traction-Preservation and Native Ligament Reconstruction Using Hamstring Autograft for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Femoral-Side Avulsion.

Anterior cruciate ligament rupture, a common sports-related knee injury, often causes instability and functional impairment and increases the long-term risk of osteoarthritis. Traditional remnant-preserving anatomical reconstruction is the first-line treatment for midsubstance tears, but optimal management of femoral-side avulsion injuries remains challenging. The vascular femoral attachment site offers unique healing potential. However, conventional reconstruction requires extensive native tissue resection, sacrificing the remnant's proprioceptive function and biological healing capacity, mak

A Novel Approach to Trunk Rehabilitation: Designing an Upper Body Robotic Mobilizer for Neurological Disorders.

After a neurological adverse event, restoring trunk functionality is essential for regaining balance, proprioception, and strength, all of which are critical for performing activities of daily living and enabling rehabilitation for impaired upper and lower limbs. Traditional therapy focuses on enhancing core strength, stability, and proprioceptive capabilities. Recent advancements in the field propose robotic solutions that utilize platforms to induce specific movements, stimulating muscular activation and prompting patients to respond to guided motions. These solutions often employ robotic se…

Subjective embodiment during the rubber hand illusion predicts severity of premonitory sensations and tics in Tourette Syndrome.

In Tourette Syndrome, the expression of tics and commonly preceding premonitory sensations is associated with perturbed subjective feelings of self-control and agency. We compared responses to the Rubber Hand Illusion in 23 adults with TS and 22 controls. Both TS and control participants reported equivalent subjective embodiment of the artificial hand: feelings of ownership, location, and agency were greater during synchronous visuo-tactile stimulation, compared to asynchronous. However, individuals with TS did not manifest greater proprioceptive drift, an objective marker of embodiment observ

Sensory motor mismatch within the supplementary motor area in the dystonic monkey.

Dystonia, a movement disorder characterized by abnormal postures, is associated in primary forms of the disease with subtle proprioceptive troubles and aberrant somatotopic representation in the somatosensory cortex (SC). However, it is unclear whether these sensory features are a causal phenomenon or a consequence of dystonia. The supplementary motor area proper (SMAp), a premotor cortical region, receives strong inputs from both the SC and basal ganglia. We hypothesized that disruption in sensory-motor integration within the SMAp may play a part in the pathophysiology of dystonia. Using a mo

When mirrors lie: "visual capture" of arm position impairs reaching performance.

If we stand at a mirror's edge, we can see one half of our body reflected in the mirror, as if it were the other half of our body, seen "through" the mirror. We used this mirror illusion to examine the effect of conflicts between visually and proprioceptively specified arm positions on subsequent reaching movements made with the unseen right arm. When participants viewed their static left arm in the mirror (i.e., as if it were their right arm), subsequent right-arm reaching movements were affected significantly more when there was conflict between the apparent visual and the proprioceptively s

Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness Begins with a Transient Neural Switch.

Unaccustomed and/or strenuous eccentric contractions are known to cause delayed-onset muscle soreness. In spite of this fact, their exact cause and mechanism have been unknown for more than 120 years. The exploration of the diverse functionality of the Piezo2 ion channel, as the principal proprioceptive component, and its autonomously acquired channelopathy may bring light to this apparently simple but mysterious pain condition. Correspondingly, the neurocentric non-contact acute compression axonopathy theory of delayed-onset muscle soreness suggests two damage phases affecting two muscle comp
