BACKGROUND: The durability of surgical aortic valve replacement prostheses can be limited due to structural valve deterioration over the years. Because of increased patient age and surgical risk, many of these patients are treated with valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The Souter-Strathclyde unconstrained elbow prosthesis was prospectively studied in 36 patients (45 prostheses) with rheumatoid arthritis (Larsen grade 4 and grade 5). The mean age of the patients at the time of operation was 63 years (range: 39 to 75 years).
