Contributions of optical and non-optical blur to variation in visual acuity.

PURPOSE: To determine the relative contributions of optical and non-optical sources of intrinsic blur to variations in visual acuity (VA) among normally sighted subjects. METHODS: Best-corrected VA of 16 normally sighted subjects was measured using briefly presented (59 ms) tumbling E optotypes that were either unblurred or blurred through convolution with Gaussian functions of different widths. A standard model of intrinsic blur was used to estimate each subject's equivalent intrinsic blur (σint) and VA for the unblurred tumbling E (MAR0). For 14 subjects, a radially averaged optical point s

Magnesium valproate in learning disabled children with interictal paroxysmal EEG patterns: Preliminary report.

Previous studies have investigated whether routine use of antiepileptic drugs is adequate to improve cognitive abilities in children who are learning disabled not otherwise specified (LD NOS) and who display interictal paroxysmal patterns in the electroencephalogram (EEG) but do not have epilepsy, and the findings of these studies have been controversial. In the current study, 112 LD children without epilepsy were assessed; however, only 18 met the strict inclusion/exclusion criteria in order to obtain a homogeneous sample. These children showed interictal paroxysmal patterns in the EEG, and a

Are poor mathematics skills associated with visual deficits in temporal processing?

Developmental learning disabilities such as dyslexia and dyscalculia have a high rate of co-occurrence in pediatric populations, suggesting that they share underlying cognitive and neurophysiological mechanisms. Dyslexia and other developmental disorders with a strong heritable component have been associated with reduced sensitivity to coherent motion stimuli, an index of visual temporal processing on a millisecond time-scale. Here we examined whether deficits in sensitivity to visual motion are evident in children who have poor mathematics skills relative to other children of the same age. We

The amblyopic deficit for global motion is spatial scale invariant.

Humans with amblyopia display anomalous performance for global motion discrimination. Attempts have been made to rule out an explanation based solely on the visibility loss in lower visual areas. However, it remains a possibility that the altered scale over which local motion is processed in V1 might lead to reduced efficiency of global motion processing in extra-striate cortex. We use stimuli composed of spatial frequency bandpass elements, equated for visibility, to show that the global motion deficit in amblyopia for both fellow and amblyopic eyes is still present once impairments in low-le

Effects of attention shifts to stationary objects during steady-state smooth pursuit eye movements.

A number of studies have shown that stationary backgrounds compromise smooth pursuit eye movements. It has been suggested that poor attentional selection of the pursuit target was responsible for reductions of pursuit gain. To quantify the detrimental effects of attention, we instructed observers to either pay attention to background objects or to ignore them. The to-be-attended object was indicated by peripheral or central cues. Strong reductions of pursuit gain occurred when the following conditions were met: (a) the subject payed attention to the object (b) a salient event was present, for

Measurements and calculations on the simple up-down adaptive procedure for speech-in-noise tests.

The simple up-down adaptive procedure is a common method for measuring speech reception thresholds. It is used by the Dutch speech-in-noise telephone screening test [National Hearing test; Smits and Houtgast Ear Hear. 26, 89-95 (2005)]. The test uses digit triplets to measure the speech reception threshold in noise by telephone (SRTT(n)). About 66 000 people took this test within four months of its introduction and details were stored of all individual measurements. Analyses of this large volume of data have revealed that the standard deviation of SRTT(n) estimates increases with hearing loss.

Visibility, visual awareness, and visual masking of simple unattended targets are confined to areas in the occipital cortex beyond human V1/V2.

In visual masking, visible targets are rendered invisible by modifying the context in which they are presented, but not by modifying the targets themselves. Here, we localize the neuronal correlates of visual awareness in the human brain by using visual masking illusions. We compare monoptic visual masking activation, which we find within all retinotopic visual areas, with dichoptic masking activation, which we find only in those retinotopic areas downstream of V2. Because monoptic and dichoptic masking are equivalent in magnitude perceptually, the present results establish a lower bound for m

Asymmetry of perceived motion smear during head and eye movements: evidence for a dichotomous neural categorization of retinal image motion.

We measured perceived motion smear when retinal image motion was created either by a physically moving object or by movement of the eyes or head. Consistent with previous reports, the extent of perceived motion smear during an eye or head movement is less than that produced by physical object motion when the eyes are stationary. Moreover, perceived smear is substantially smaller when the motion of the retinal image is in the same direction as the eye or head movement compared to when image motion is in the opposite direction. These results imply that extra-retinal signals associated with eye a

"Bothersome blur": a functional unit of blur perception.

Knowledge regarding the amount of blur perceived to be "bothersome" to an individual, namely that which is assumed to be annoying and to adversely affect task performance, remains limited. A Badal optical system was used to measure the blur detection, bothersome blur, and non-resolvable blur dioptric thresholds monocularly either to an isolated 20/50 or 20/200 Snellen E, or to three 20/50 lines of text. Subjects were comprised of 13 visually normal young adults and 3 absolute presbyopes. Cycloplegia was used to paralyze accommodation in the young adults. Within each target type for the young a

Stress profile in essential hypertension.

This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that basal sympathetic activity and sympathetic reactivity to stress are increased in patients with essential hypertension. One hundred and fifteen randomly selected patients with essential hypertension and an equal number of age- and sex-matched normal controls were included in this study. Various parameters, viz., heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, peripheral skin temperature, electromyographic activity of the frontalis muscle, skin conductance (measured by electrodermography), and blood pressure, were measured in the resting state

Neuropathic pain symptoms relative to overall pain rating.

UNLABELLED: The influence of sensory symptoms on overall simple pain ratings in neuropathic pain is not well understood. The goal of this study was to determine this relationship by using the Neuropathic Pain Questionnaire (NPQ) and Neuropathic Pain Scale (NPS) in patients who had neuropathic pain. Overall pain intensity ratings were assessed by means of Average and Worst Pain ratings from the Brief Pain Inventory. Ongoing average pain was rated as 5.7 and worst pain as 7.7 on 0 to 10 scale, and it was present in 96% of patients, whereas symptoms that are commonly studied in the laboratory, su

Behavioral estimates of absolute visual threshold in mice.

Behavioral measurements on the water maze show night blindness in albino mice but cortical recordings show no difference between pigmented and congenic albino mice. Consequently we have measured the absolute threshold in albino and pigmented mice using an operant method. The estimated threshold value is -5.3 log cd/m2 for albino mice and -5.5 log cd/m2 for the pigmented mice. We conclude that threshold values depend on the behavioral paradigm used. Operant behavioral thresholds show that albino and pigmented mice detect levels of light similar to their VEP thresholds. Cognitive differences mig

Visual search of good and poor readers: effects with targets having single and combined features.

This study examined differences between normal and poor readers in the visual-search strategy used to detect a target shape in a background of similar shapes. No differences between the two groups occur in search for simple features (Exps. 1 and 3) and conjunction of features (Exp. 2). However, the performance of the two groups differ on search tasks with multifeatured shapes, in which targets and nontargets differ in both the identity of features and their spatial relationship or in the spatial relationship of features alone. Results suggest that, rather than a problem in searching complex st

Scentronic: An artificial intelligence-assisted olfactory interface for remote odor sharing and transmission.

Recent years have witnessed the surge of human-machine interfaces (HMIs) for various applications. Olfaction is a fundamental chemical sense crucial to perception, memory, and emotion. Current limitations arise from the difficulty of accurately capturing, transmitting, and reproducing odor signals, and the lack of standardized, network-enabled platforms. This work presents an internet of things (IoT)-enabled olfactory interface for remote odor sensing and stimulation. The system integrates an artificial intelligence-assisted odor sensing platform with a wearable piezoelectric olfactory actuati

Decoupling parameters of adhesion from viscoelasticity in the human perception of stickiness via shear-stiffening elastomers.

In engineering, the adhesion or "tack" of an object can be related to its bulk material properties and interfacial adhesion, sometimes quantified by a peak adhesive force or work of adhesion. However, it is unknown how these engineering contributions to adhesion compare to the human perception of "stickiness". Here, to decouple between adhesive and viscoelastic parameters, we used shear-stiffening elastomers to modulate viscoelastic and adhesive contributions by velocity. Through psychophysical testing, we discovered that the human perception of "stickiness" is best correlated to a non-canonic

Vis2Touch: Perceptually Grounded 3D Printing of Visual Art With AI-Driven Depth and Texture Estimation.

Visual art offers a rich expression of its subject's color and form, but lacks the haptic cues of depth and texture central to understanding its physical characteristics. We present Vis2Touch, a system that transforms color images into textured 2.5D models for 3D printing by combining depth and surface texture while preserving the original color appearance. Vis2Touch composes 2.5D objects by combining a monocular depth estimator to reconstruct macroscale depth and a fine-tuned diffusion model to generate microscale textures from semantically segmented image regions. These two heightfields are

Physical Activity and Purkinje Cells: Mechanisms of Cerebellar Plasticity and Neuroprotection.

The cerebellum plays a key role in regulating movement, coordination, and certain cognitive functions. Purkinje cells are the principal neurons of the cerebellum, essential for integrating information and modulating output to other parts of the central nervous system. Physical exercise is crucial for maintaining psychophysical well-being and improving quality of life. Moreover, its beneficial effects on brain health are well established. After a brief overview of cerebellar anatomy, this narrative review aims to summarize current experimental evidence on the effects of physical activity on Pur

Psychedelic 5-HT2A agonist increases spontaneous and evoked 5-Hz oscillations in visual and retrosplenial cortex.

Visual perception appears largely stable in time. However, psychophysical studies have revealed that theta waves (4-8 Hz) can modulate perception and have been linked to various cognitive states and functions. Neither the contribution of theta waves to cortical activity nor their impact during aberrant brain states have been resolved at high spatiotemporal scales. Here, using cortex-wide population voltage imaging in awake mice, we found that bouts of 5-Hz oscillations in the visual cortex are accompanied by similar oscillations in the retrosplenial cortex, occurring both spontaneously and evo
