Neurosurgical care has undergone remarkable technological advancement over recent decades, yet equitable access remains uneven across health systems. This study examines the structural determinants of neurosurgical access in Brazil, a middle-income country with a universal public health system (Sistema Único de Saúde), highlighting the paradox between workforce expansion and persistent territorial inequities. Between 2015 and 2025, Brazil's neurosurgical workforce increased by 50.9%, rising from 2875 to 4340 specialists, with national density growing from 1.43 to 2.04 per 100 000 inhabitants.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Zimbabwe faces a protracted cholera crisis exacerbated by El Niño-induced droughts, transitioning from episodic outbreaks to an endemic public health emergency. While recurrent outbreaks are often attributed to poor community awareness, this study moves beyond the conventional Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) paradigm. Grounded in the Integrated Behavioral Model for WASH and the theory of structural violence, we investigate the structural determinants of the knowledge-practice gap to understand how infrastructural disparities constrain cholera prevention.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a neglected disease, primarily due to poor detection stemming from limited surveillance and diagnostic capabilities in most countries. As a result, there is limited ability to monitor and evaluate country, regional, and global progress towards the WHO goal of eliminating human rabies deaths by 2030. There is a need for a low-cost, readily reproducible method of estimating rabies burden and elimination capacity in endemic countries.
METHODS: Publicly available economic, environmental, political, social, public health, and One Health indicators were evaluated to identify v

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 58 million people worldwide are chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), yet only about 20% have been formally diagnosed. Traditional laboratory-based antibody and RNA assays require infrastructure and trained personnel, limiting their uptake in resource-limited and hard-to-reach settings. The OraQuick HCV self-test (HCVST) is the first World Health Organization-prequalified HCVST, which delivers results in 20-40 min via an easy-to-use gum-swab format. Field evaluations report a sensitivity of about 97%-98% and a specificity of

Blood parasitic diseases remain a significant public health challenge in India, with malaria, lymphatic filariasis (LF), and visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) accounting for the highest disease burden among parasitic infections. India contributes a major share of the global burden, particularly for LF and kala-azar, and remains one of the few countries endemic for all three major blood parasites. These diseases remain endemic in several regions, particularly among marginalized and tribal populations. The complex epidemiology is compounded by asymptomatic carriers, atypical clinical manifestat

Extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid, caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi, has emerged as a critical global health security threat, with Pakistan, particularly Sindh province, at its epicenter. The misuse of antibiotics, inadequate diagnostic tools, and poor water and sanitation infrastructure have created ideal conditions for the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). XDR typhoid strains resistant to multiple first-line antibiotics have been linked to environmental contamination, with urban areas like Karachi demonstrating high rates of waterborne transmission. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is length-dependent peripheral nerve damage arising as a complication of type 1 or type 2 diabetes in up to 50% of patients. DPN poses a substantial burden on patients, who can experience impaired gait and loss of balance, predisposing them to falls and fractures, and neuropathic pain, which is frequently difficult to treat and reduces quality of life. Advanced DPN can lead to diabetic foot ulcers and non-healing wounds that often necessitate lower-limb amputation. From a socioeconomic perspective, DPN increases both direct health-care costs and indirect co

Continual advances in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) have greatly improved early transplantation-related mortality and broadened the applicability of this intense but curative therapy. With growing success there is increasing awareness of late complications, occurring ≥1 year after treatment, and their associated morbidity and mortality in HCT survivors. These late effects occur with a wide spectrum in terms of latency, intensity, reversibility, and lethality. There is a need to understand the biology, surveillance, management, and patient experience of HCT-related effects, as well a

Experience from mass gatherings - usually attended by at least 25'000 persons - shows that approximately one in a thousand participants will consult with an on-site medical emergency service. Communicable diseases usually play a minor role. Historically outbreaks of meningococcal disease were recorded after the hajj, but this has been well controlled in the past few years subsequent to vaccinations and other measures required by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia health authorities. Major stress of the regional public health system is associated with accidents and non-communicable diseases, the major

Monkeypox (mpox) infection gained global attention when it spread outside Africa in 2003. A novel mpox strain was identified in the Central African Republic in 2024. This new variant presents significant clinical and epidemiological differences from previously known strains. The high rate of pediatric infection, shortened incubation period, rapid transmission, unusual symptoms, accelerated disease progression, and higher case fatality rate make this strain a potential public health concern. Current epidemiological data suggest a case fatality rate of approximately 8-10 %, higher than clade II

Recurrent influenza epidemics and pandemic potential are significant risks to global health. Public health authorities use clinical surveillance to locate and monitor influenza and influenza-like cases and outbreaks to mitigate hospitalizations and deaths. Currently, global integration of clinical surveillance is the only reliable method for reporting influenza types and subtypes to warn of emergent pandemic strains. The utility of wastewater surveillance (WWS) during the COVID-19 pandemic as a less resource intensive replacement or complement for clinical surveillance has been predicated on a

The largest ever Ebola virus disease outbreak is ravaging West Africa. The constellation of little public health infrastructure, low levels of health literacy, limited acute care and infection prevention and control resources, densely populated areas, and a highly transmissible and lethal viral infection have led to thousands of confirmed, probable, or suspected cases thus far. Ebola virus disease is characterized by a febrile severe illness with profound gastrointestinal manifestations and is complicated by intravascular volume depletion, shock, profound electrolyte abnormalities, and organ d…

Early intervention (EI) is essential for the language, social, and educational development of deaf and/or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. In African countries, however, the implementation of EI remains significantly constrained by cost considerations and systemic service gaps. This narrative review synthesizes findings from 26 peer-reviewed publications to explore how cost influences access to and sustainability of EI services in Africa. Seven interrelated themes were identified: (i) high out-of-pocket expenses that limit family access to services; (ii) inadequate public funding and heavy reli

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide mass vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, while having been the most critical action in combating further waves of COVID-19, was initially fraught with multiple infrastructural and socio-cultural challenges. Vaccine hesitancy, a phenomenon of doubt over the vaccines' claimed efficacy and/or safety amidst access to vaccination, emerged as a major challenge for global health, despite approval and regular post-marketing surveillance by major regulatory bodies.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature related to vaccine hesitancy in India published until November 14, 2021 using rele

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increased maternal morbidity and mortality, with racially minoritized women having worse outcomes than other women in the United States. However, there is little understanding of pandemic-specific stressors that may contribute to disparate outcomes. Thus, this analysis provides descriptive statistics of COVID-19 pandemic related factors among a sample of women who recently gave birth in the United States that can inform future public health disaster preparedness.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of secondary data.

Zoonotic food- and waterborne protozoan parasites (FWPPs) pose a significant global public health risk, causing substantial morbidity via contaminated fresh produce, water, and meat. Despite their notable impact, surveillance and detection technologies remain inadequate for high-priority protozoans such as Cryptosporidium spp. and Toxoplasma gondii, as current World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) guidelines primarily focus on bacterial pathogens. This review evaluates the global burden of Cryptosporidium spp. and T. gondii, and highlights the limitations

Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe mental disorder associated with significant disability, caregiver burden, and public health impact, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as India. While multiple international clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) exist, contextual differences in illness presentation, sociocultural factors, health-care infrastructure, and resource availability necessitate region-specific guidance. This CPG provides a comprehensive, stage-based overview of the assessment and management of schizophrenia, with an emphasis on applicability to the Indian context. Th

Maternal mortality remains a critical global public health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income settings where failures in surveillance, early diagnosis, and clinical decision making compromise obstetric care. In this context, the present study aimed to critically review the scientific literature on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in gynecologic and obstetric health, focusing on the prevention of avoidable deaths and severe maternal events. This is a narrative literature review with a qualitative and exploratory-interpretative approach, conducted between May and June 2025 in r

INTRODUCTION: Nigeria bears the highest global burden of sickle cell disease (SCD), with significant implications for public health infrastructure and healthcare delivery. Despite its prevalence, there remains significant gap regarding phenotype awareness, diagnostic precision, and disease comprehension among families affected by SCD. This investigation examined haemoglobin phenotype awareness, SCD knowledge levels, and the incidence of erroneous phenotype results among parents of children with SCD in Ibadan, Nigeria. METHOD: A mixed-methods study was conducted among 209 parents of children wi…

Viral hemorrhagic fever is a severe illness characterized by constitutional signs and symptoms accompanied by coagulopathy, shock, and multiorgan failure caused by dozens of enveloped RNA viruses spanning 6 viral families: Flaviviridae, Arenaviridae, Hantaviridae, Nairoviridae, Phenuiviridae, and Filoviridae. Ebola virus (EBOV), the etiologic agent of Ebola virus disease (EVD), is among the deadliest and accounts for the majority of known human infections and deaths within the family Filoviridae. EBOV was responsible for the 2013-2016 West Africa epidemic and the 2018-2020 Democratic Republic
