The myodural bridge of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) alters CSF flow.

Disorders of the volume, pressure or circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lead to disease states in both newborns and adults; despite this significance, there is uncertainty regarding the basic mechanics of the CSF. The suboccipital muscles connect to the dura surrounding the spinal cord, forming a complex termed the 'myodural bridge'. This study tests the hypothesis that the myodural bridge functions to alter the CSF circulation. The suboccipital muscles of American alligators were surgically exposed and electrically stimulated simultaneously with direct recordings of CSF pressure and

Doppler evaluation of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts are becoming an increasingly popular technique for the treatment of portal hypertension and its complications. However, to maintain patency, revisions are periodically required to treat stenosis and thrombosis. At many centers, Doppler sonography is used for routine follow-up. A variety of hemodynamic parameters, including main portal vein velocity, maximum stent velocity, minimum stent velocity, velocity gradient in the stent, temporal changes in stent velocity, flow direction in the intrahepatic portal and hepatic veins, and pulsatility of flow

Pulsatile tinnitus due to intracranial arteriovenous fistula indirectly identified by carotid Doppler ultrasound.

Pulsatile tinnitus is a specific type of sound caused by vascular anomalies, usually associated with turbulent blood flow, secondary to high-output stenosis or arterial tortuosity. These alterations can produce rhythmic sounds that compromise patients' quality of life. This report describes the case of a 51-year-old woman with pulsating tinnitus in her right ear for 18 months. No significant changes were identified on arterial computed tomography angiography or cranial magnetic resonance angiography due to the non-completion of the joint venous phase. Carotid Doppler ultrasound showed abnormal

[In Vitro Experimental Study on Hemodynamics of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement].

The patient-specific aortic silicone model was established based on CTA data. The digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) test method in the modified ViVitro pulsatile flow system was used to investigate the aortic hemodynamic performance and flow field characteristics before and after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The results showed that the hemodynamic parameters were consistent with the clinical data, which verified the accuracy of the model. From the comparative study of preoperative and postoperative effective orifice area (0.33 cm2 and 1.78 cm2), mean pressure differen…

Advanced vascular imaging techniques.

This chapter outlines recent advances in imaging of disorders of the cervicocerebral vasculature that permit evaluation of the lumen, the vessel wall, and the patterns of blood flow within the vessel. Noninvasive MR techniques to evaluate the vessel lumen, such as noncontrast time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CEMRA) are routinely used in diagnosis, planning, and posttreatment follow-up. More recently, high-resolution vessel wall imaging MRI (VWMRI) has been developed, which provides additional information about the vessel wall o

Venous stasis during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

The objectives of this research were (a) to determine the effect of insufflation at laparoscopic cholecystectomy to 12 mm Hg on femoral venous blood flow; and (b) to assess the function of intermittent pneumatic compressors (IPC) and intermittent electric calf stimulators (IECS) in the presence of a pneumoperitoneum. Measures of baseline venous blood flow velocity, femoral vein diameter, and maximum blood flow velocity achieved by IPC or IECS were made in the presence or absence of a pneumoperitoneum of 12 mm Hg. The ICP and IECS were randomly allocated to either leg. All measures were made by

Duodenal bulb control of the flow rate of digesta in the fasted and fed dog.

1. Continuous measurement of the flow of digesta near the pylorus, and 5 cm aborally, was assessed in the conscious dog using a chronically implanted flowmeter. The patterns of flow were related to motor activity of the gastroduodenal junction. 2. Electromagnetic measurement of the flow was calibrated in vitro by means of a pulsatile pump. Validation was obtained in vivo by direct evaluation of the amount of chyme collected from an open duodenal cannula and indirectly by a dye-dilution technique. 3. After a 12 h fast, only small amounts of gastric contents were delivered into the duodenum. Thi

Next generation of ventricular catheters for hydrocephalus based on parametric designs.

BACKGROUND: The flow pattern of the cerebrospinal fluid is probably the most important factor related to obstruction of ventricular catheters during the normal treatment of hydrocephalus. To better comprehend the flow pattern, we have carried out a parametric study via numerical models of ventricular catheters. In previous studies, the flow was studied under steady and, recently, in pulsatile boundary conditions by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in three-dimensional catheter models. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to bring in prototype models of catheter CFD flow solutions as well to

Arterial wave reflections increase during voluntary apnea and the cold pressor test, increasing aortic systolic blood pressure.

Acute sympatho-excitation increases peripheral blood pressure (BP) through sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction. Aortic BP and pulsatile hemodynamics are stronger predictors of cardiovascular risk and outcomes compared with brachial BP. How pulsatile hemodynamics respond to sympatho-excitation and the impact on aortic BP are incompletely understood. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of maximal voluntary apnea and the cold pressor test (CPT) as sympatho-excitatory perturbations on aortic BP and measures of pulsatile hemodynamics. Radial artery pressure waves were acquired

Pulsatility Index quantification in the human precapillary arterioles of the eye.

The Pulsatility Index (PI) was quantified for the first time in the human conjunctival pre-capillary arterioles in vivo. In 30 arterioles with diameters ranging between 6 and 12μm, from 15 healthy humans, peak to peak velocity ranged from 0.2 up to 4.8mm/s with a mean value equal to 1.4±0.2 (SE) mm/s. The PI ranged from 0.4 to 1.5 and the overall mean value was 0.8±0.1 (SE). The linear correlation between PI and diameter was practically zero (Spearman's correlation coefficient, rs≈0) for the range of arteriolar diameters examined here. In this work a first step was made towards the complete PI

Transcranial Doppler is an effective method in assessing cerebral blood flow patterns during peripheral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

BACKGROUND: Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) can be life-saving in refractory cardiogenic shock but carries a risk of neurologic complications such as stroke and hemorrhage. As little is known about the effects of different peripheral VA-ECMO cannulation sites on cerebral blood flow (CBF), transcranial Doppler (TCD) was used to determine whether the cannulation site affects CBF. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients receiving VA-ECMO for cardiogenic shock via axillary or femoral artery cannulation were prospectively enrolled. Measured bilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA),

Ophthalmic artery Doppler in the prediction of preeclampsia.

The ophthalmic artery is an easily accessible vessel for Doppler assessment that provides information on the less accessible intracranial circulation. In women with preeclampsia, compared with normotensive pregnant women, there is a decrease in impedance to flow and an increase in velocities in the flow velocity waveforms from the ophthalmic arteries. This study aimed to report the methodology for ophthalmic artery Doppler and summarize findings from the clinical implementation of such assessment in the prediction of preeclampsia. The Embase and MEDLINE were searched from inception to November

Development of Coronary Pulse Wave Velocity: New Pathophysiological Insight Into Coronary Artery Disease.

BACKGROUND: Although aortic stiffness assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a strong predictor of coronary artery disease, the significance of local coronary stiffness has never been tackled. The first objective of this study was to describe a method of measuring coronary PWV (CoPWV) invasively and to describe its determinants. The second objective was to assess both CoPWV and aortic PWV in patients presenting with acute coronary syndromes or stable coronary artery disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 53 patients, CoPWV was measured from the delay in pressure wave and distance traveled as a pr

Profound increase in longitudinal displacements of the porcine carotid artery wall can take place independently of wall shear stress: a continuation report.

The mechanisms underlying longitudinal displacements of the arterial wall, that is, displacements of the wall layers along the artery, and the resulting intramural shear strain remain largely unknown. We have already found that these displacements undergo profound changes in response to catecholamines. Wall shear stress, closely related to wall shear rate, represents the viscous drag exerted on the vessel wall by flowing blood. The aim of the work described here was to study possible relations between the wall shear rate and the longitudinal displacements. We investigated the carotid arteries
