Fenvalerate treatment affects development of olfactory glomeruli in Manduca sexta.

Low doses of fenvalerate, a widely used type-II pyrethroid insecticide, have been shown previously to produce abnormal olfactory centers in the brain and abnormal olfactory-mediated behavior in beetles (Wegerhoff et al. [1998] Neuroreport 9:3241-3245). Here, we use the experimental advantages of the moth Manduca sexta to explore the cellular changes that lead to these abnormalities. Our results indicate that treatment with fenvalerate may affect multiple aspects of the development of the primary olfactory centers, the antennal lobes, in Manduca, including ingrowth of olfactory receptor axons,

Monitoring house reinfestation by vectors of Chagas disease: a comparative trial of detection methods during a four-year follow-up.

Domestic reinfestations by triatomine bugs were monitored after application of deltamethrin and apparent elimination of Triatoma infestans in Amama and other nearby rural villages, north-west Argentina, from 1992 to 1996. The five methods used were sensor boxes, sheets of pink typing-paper, timed manual catches by a skilled three-person team aided by a flushing-out agent, collections by house-dwellers, and knockdown using insecticide fumigant canisters. In bedrooms, house-dwellers collected T. infestans significantly more frequently than the flushing-out method, but the reverse occurred in per

Bednet impregnation for Chagas disease control: a new perspective.

BACKGROUND: To determine the efficacy and acceptability of deltamethrin-impregnated bednets in controlling Chagas disease in South America. METHODS: In three endemic departments of Colombia, a qualitative study on people's knowledge about Chagas disease, vectors, preventive measures and their willingness for collaboration in control operations was undertaken. Additionally, in an entomological study with 100 laboratory-bred Chagas vectors (Rhodnius prolixus), vectors were released for 5 nights (20 each night) in an experimental room, with the human bait protected for one night by an unimpregna

Cutaneous histiocytosis with Langerhans cell features induced by scabies: a case report.

An infant with biopsy-proven scabies developed nodular lesions. Histopathology revealed atypical histiocytes with Langerhans cell features. Within six months after treatment all skin lesions gradually disappeared. We suggest that the nodules in scabies can be due to Langerhans cell proliferation.

Enhanced Cytotoxicity and Mechanistic Responses to Co-Exposure to the Pesticide β-Cypermethrin and the Foodborne Contaminant Ethyl Carbamate in Caco-2 Cells.

Beta-cypermethrin (β-CYP) is a widely used pyrethroid insecticide, whereas ethyl carbamate (EC) is a processing-derived contaminant in fermented foods. This mechanism-oriented in vitro study examined cellular responses to EC, β-CYP, and their combination in Caco-2 cells; the concentrations were substantially higher than typical dietary exposure and were not intended for quantitative risk assessment. Cell viability, apoptosis, cell cycle, wound closure, and mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) were evaluated via CCK-8, AO/EB staining, flow cytometry, wound-healing, and JC-1 assays. Network to

PoolSeq Genome-Wide Association Studies and Microbial Signature Analyses Identify Novel Candidates Associated With Pyrethroid Resistance Evolution in Anopheles funestus in Cameroon.

Intensification of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors is undermining efforts to sustain control strategies. The evolutionary features underlying such exacerbation in major vector such as Anopheles funestus are only partially understood. PoolSeq whole genome analysis of Anopheles funestus from Mibellon (Cameroon), (alive and dead at 1×, 5× and 10× concentrations), failed to identify hits associated with resistance escalation. However, stronger signals emerge at the rp1 and CYP9 loci when comparing these phenotypes to the susceptible reference strain FANG, with genomic analysis using F3 c

Prenatal exposure to multiple insecticides and reduced birth weight: a possible mediating role of plasma metabolomic alterations.

Organophosphates (OPPs), pyrethroids (PYRs), and neonicotinoids (NNIs) represent three major classes of insecticides with potential developmental toxicity, yet their effects on fetal growth remain insufficiently characterized. This prospective cohort study examined 442 maternal-infant pairs from Jiangsu, China to assess the relationship between prenatal insecticide exposure and birth outcomes, while exploring underlying metabolomic mechanisms. Maternal fasting blood samples obtained during early pregnancy (<16 weeks) were analyzed for 15 insecticides/their metabolites (3 OPPs, 3 PYRs, and 9 NN

Cytochrome P450 Monooxygenase Mediated Pyrethroid Resistance in the Urban Dengue Vector, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) from Northern Part of West Bengal, India.

PURPOSE: Development of pyrethroid resistance in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) can lead to failure of ongoing vector control strategies and thereby, impede prevention of dengue transmission in urban regions of India. Therefore, its resistance status needs to be properly understood to prevent recurring dengue outbreaks in cities. The present study investigated cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP)-mediated pyrethroid resistance in this vector species from dengue endemic northern part of West Bengal, India. METHODS: Larvae and pupae of wild Ae. aegypti populations were collected from urban r

Efficacy of volatile pyrethroid spatial repellents to reduce exposure to mosquito and sand fly vectors and human infection risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Volatile pyrethroid spatial repellents (VPSRs) have emerged as promising complementary tools for vector control. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the protective efficacy (PE) of VPSRs against mosquito- and sand-fly-borne human infections, and against vector numbers in traps. METHODS: Clinical infection and entomological studies that evaluated VPSRs against human infection with Plasmodium, arboviruses (Dengue and Zika), and Leishmania, and against their respective vectors, were systematically reviewed. Random-effects meta-analyses estimated pooled PE values and ex

Pyrethroids and organophosphate resistance in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) and their underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: For decades, insecticides have been central to controlling the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.), but extensive use has driven resistance development. This study investigates resistance of Ae. aegypti to pyrethroids (permethrin, deltamethrin) and organophosphates (malathion, pirimiphos-methyl) and their underlying mechanisms across Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the USA. METHODS: Adult female Ae. aegypti (3-5 days old, non-blood-fed) were subjected to World Health Organization (WHO) tube bioassays using 0.4% permethrin, 0.03% deltamethrin, 5% malathion, and 60 mg/m2 pi

Allelic variation in a cluster of epsilon glutathione S-transferase genes contributes to DDT and pyrethroid resistance in the major African malaria vector Anopheles funestus.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance in malaria vectors is a serious challenge to malaria control and elimination. Elucidation of the role of detoxification genes in resistance is necessary to develop targeted strategies to reduce malaria burden. Glutathione S-transferase epsilon clusters (GSTe genes) are upregulated in DDT- and pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles funestus mosquitoes across Africa. However, except for GSTe2, the molecular mechanisms behind this upregulation remain unclear. Here, we established that overexpression and allelic variation of GSTe genes contribute to insecticide resistanc

Investigation of Leishmania infantum Infection and Feeding Preferences of Lutzomyia longipalpis During Deltamethrin (4%) Dog Collar Intervention.

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. Understanding the feeding behavior and infection rates of these vectors is crucial for disease surveillance and control. We aimed to investigate the natural infection rate of Leishmania spp. in phlebotomines and analyze their blood-feeding patterns in one of the priority areas of the state of São Paulo for the implementation of insecticide-impregnated dog collars. Sand flies were collected from urban and peri-urban areas between 2022 and 2024 using CDC light traps, manual asp

Oxidative DNA damage of lambda-cyhalothrin in model vertebrate organism.

Pesticides, widely used for insect control in agriculture, public health, and veterinary medicine, are usually present as pollutants in aquatic environments. After contamination of water bodies, pesticides cause adverse effects on non-target organisms and long-term problems in the ecosystem. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LCH) is a chemical compound belonging to the family of synthetic pyrethroids (type II) and is an active ingredient in several insecticides. This study investigated the toxic effects (DNA damage) of LCH exposure on zebrafish for 24 and 72 h. After zebrafish (Danio rerio) were obtained co

Evaluating the impact of two next-generation long-lasting insecticidal nets on malaria incidence in Uganda: an interrupted time-series analysis using routine health facility data.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria remains a significant public health challenge globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where progress has stalled in recent years. Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are a critical preventive tool against malaria. This study investigated the effectiveness of newer-generation LLINs following a universal coverage campaign in Uganda. METHODS: Health facility data collected 36 months prior to LLIN distribution and 24 months after LLIN distribution were used from 64 sites that took part in a cluster-randomised trial comparing two newer-generation LLINs (pyrethroid-pi
