Complications of prostate cancer treatment: spectrum of imaging findings.

The imaging appearances of prostate cancer are well described in the radiology literature, but little has been written about the detection and appearance of the complications of therapy for this disease. The most frequently used treatments for prostate cancer are surgical therapy (eg, radical retropubic prostatectomy, radical perineal prostatectomy), radiation therapy (eg, brachytherapy, external-beam radiation therapy, three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy), and cryoablative therapy, each of which may lead to complications with characteristic ima

An In-depth Analysis of the Adverse Effects of Ionizing Radiation Exposure on Cardiac Catheterization Staffs.

Diagnostic and interventional angiograms are instrumental in the multidisciplinary approach to CAD management, enabling accurate diagnosis and effective targeted treatments that significantly enhance patient care and cardiovascular outcomes. However, cath lab staff, including interventional cardiologists, is consistently exposed to ionizing radiation, which poses inherent health risks. Radiation exposure in the cath lab primarily results from the use of fluoroscopy and cineangiography during diagnostic and interventional procedures. Understanding these risks and implementing effective radiatio

[Biological mechanisms of radiation effects].

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ionizing radiation for diagnostic purposes is inevitable in modern medicine. The therapeutic application of irradiation is highly effective against cancer; however, this implies exposure of normal tissue structures to significant doses of radiation. Diagnostic or therapeutic exposure to ionizing radiation can result in tissue changes and tumor induction in the long term. Knowledge of the biological mechanisms underlying these effects is essential for individualization of the application. OBJECTIVES: This article examines the biological mechanisms at the tissue and mole

Radiation dose and radiation protection for patients and physicians during interventional procedure.

Although the wide acceptance of interventional radiology (IVR) procedures has led to increasing numbers of interventions being performed, the radiation doses from IVR are higher. Increasing numbers of case reports of patient radiation injury resulting from IVR are being published. Therefore, radiation protection during IVR poses a very important problem. To protect against radiation injury, the evaluation of radiation dose is essential. The radiation dose must be evaluated for each IVR x-ray machine and each laboratory, because it varies greatly. To obtain this information easily, and to ensur

Unlocking the Potential of Ultra-High Dose Fractionated Radiation for Effective Treatment of Glioblastoma in Mice.

Background: Current radiotherapy regimens for glioblastoma (GBM) have limited efficacy and fails to eradicate tumors. Regenerative medicine brings hope for repairing damaged tissue, opening opportunities for elevating the maximum acceptable radiation dose. In this study, we explored the effect of ultra-high dose fractionated radiation on tumor responses and brain injury in immunocompetent mice which can better mimic the tumor-host interactions observed in patients. We also evaluated the role of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha under radiation as potential target for combating radiation-ind

Gastroscopic observation and dose-volume histogram parameter study on gastrointestinal mucous injury for pancreatic cancer treated with TOMO.

To explore the relationships between gastrointestinal radiation injuries of pancreatic cancer patients treated with TOMO and dose-volume histogram parameters prospectively. Seventy patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent TOMO were enrolled in this prospective study from February 2015 to May 2020. The clinical and dose-volume histogram parameters of the patients were collected. The optimal dose parameters for gastrointestinal radiation ulcers were confirmed based on the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and the area below the ROC curve. Acute gastrointestinal tract toxic and s…

Transcriptome of rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) exposed to total-body irradiation.

The field of biodosimetry has seen a paradigm shift towards an increased use of molecular phenotyping technologies including omics and miRNA, in addition to conventional cytogenetic techniques. Here, we have used a nonhuman primate (NHP) model to study the impact of gamma-irradiation on alterations in blood-based gene expression. With a goal to delineate radiation induced changes in gene expression, we followed eight NHPs for 60 days after exposure to 6.5 Gy gamma-radiation for survival outcomes. Analysis of differential gene expression in response to radiation exposure yielded 26,944 dysregul

Osteoradionecrosis: causes and prevention.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the most serious complications arising from head and neck radiation therapy. Current research has shown that ORN represents nonhealing, dead bone and is not a state of infection. ORN is the result of functional and structural bony changes that may not be expressed for months or years. ORN may occur spontaneously or in response to wounding. Predisposing factors include absorbed radiation dose, fractionation, delivery modality, and dental status. Timing of dental extractions and other factors have also been shown to affect incidence. ORN may be reduced through

A synthetic superoxide dismutase/catalase mimetic EUK-207 mitigates radiation dermatitis and promotes wound healing in irradiated rat skin.

In the event of a radionuclear attack or nuclear accident, the skin would be the first barrier exposed to radiation, though skin injury can progress over days to years following exposure. Chronic oxidative stress has been implicated as being a potential contributor to the progression of delayed radiation-induced injury to skin and other organs. To examine the causative role of oxidative stress in delayed radiation-induced skin injury, including impaired wound healing, we tested a synthetic superoxide dismutase (SOD)/catalase mimetic, EUK-207, in a rat model of combined skin irradiation and wou

Eriocalyxin B confers radioprotection of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells via granulocyte colony-stimulating factor induction.

Ionizing radiation induces injury in multiple organs, particularly in the hematopoietic system; however, the implementation of effective preventive measures for hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome (H-ARS) is still limited. In this study, we investigated the radioprotective effects of a natural diterpenoid, eriocalyxin B (EriB), on hematopoietic injury associated with ARS in mice exposed to total body irradiation (TBI). The results suggested that EriB effectively provides radioprotection against hematopoietic injury, as evidenced by improved survival, increased peripheral blood recovery, and

Caffeine consumption is associated with decreased severe late toxicity after radiation to the pelvis.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have suggested that pentoxifylline, a methylxanthine, can prevent or ameliorate late radiation injury in animals and humans. Caffeine is a commonly consumed methylxanthine that provides a model for evaluating the impact of this category of drugs on radiation injury. A retrospective study was undertaken to determine if there is an association between caffeine consumption and a lower incidence of late radiation toxicity. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From 1984 through 1990, 82 patients with cervical cancer and 53 patients with endometrial cancer were treated with primary or adj

Radiation colitis and proctitis.

Radiation therapy is commonly utilized as a major component in the treatment of pelvic malignancy. Unfortunately, secondary toxicity to the lower gastrointestinal tract can occur. This most commonly affects the rectum, although injuries to the colon and small intestine are not uncommon. The presentation can be acute or chronic, and different mechanisms are responsible for each. Symptomatology is quite variable but can result in significant compromise for the patient. Numerous preventive and treatment strategies have been applied to this disease process. This article presents a summary of the c

[Radiation accidents affecting the eye and their treatment (author's transl)].

Eye injuries which can occur as a result of radiation accidents of leaks in nuclear power plants are described and their treatment discussed. The trauma may be due to mechanical or thermal influences or the result of exposure to chemicals or radioactivity. After stopping the blepharospasm careful inspection of the conjunctiva is mandatory. If the bulbus is intact, rinsing with a pulsating water jet (Waterpik) is recommended, while if it is perforated primary operative treatment of the injury must be performed before radiation damage sets in. It is pointed out that the special medical centers f

Pediatric Overuse Injuries.

The incidence of pediatric overuse injuries is increasing in proportion to rising participation and training intensity in youth sports worldwide. The growing musculoskeletal system of children and adolescents makes them susceptible to a unique type of injuries which differ from those in a mature skeleton and requires specific knowledge about normal physiology and imaging manifestations of injuries. The most common overuse injuries in children include stress fractures, traction apophysitis, and repetitive physeal injuries. Less commonly, osteochondral lesions, impingement syndromes, and tendino
