The primary aim of our study was to provide a comprehensive review of the clinical, imaging, and histopathological features of Tarlov cysts (TCs) and to report operative and nonoperative management strategies in patients with sacral TCs. A literature review was performed to identify articles that reported surgical and nonsurgical management of TCs over the last 10 years. Tarlov cysts are often incidental lesions found in the spine and do not require surgical intervention in the great majority of cases. When TCs are symptomatic, the typical clinical presentation includes back pain, coccyx pain,

INTRODUCTION: A postsurgical ciliated cyst (PSCC) is an epithelial cyst that usually develops in the maxilla, although in rare cases, it can … udostratified columnar epithelium. In the third patient, it was not possible to rule out an unusual radicular cyst.
CONCLUSIONS: Although PSCCs are not commonly encountered in daily practice, clinicians should consider this possibility including it in the differential diagnosis of odontogenic jaw cysts and benign jaw tumors, particularly in patients who have un …

BACKGROUND: The management of lumbar synovial cysts (LSC) has been a controversial topic for many years. Whereas many authors label LSC as markers of instability and thus necessitating fusion, others suggest that decompression alone without fusion is a viable initial treatment option. Our objective was to clarify outcomes in patients undergoing decompression alone and decompression with fusion for symptomatic LSC and identify factors for cyst recurrence.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was performed of all patients undergoing initial treatment for LSC at a single institution ranging from

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the interaction of stromal components in odontogenic tumors. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate mast cells (MCs), myofibroblasts, macrophages, and their possible association with angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty cases of KCOTs were included and analyzed by immunohistochemistry for mast cell tryptase, α-SMA, CD34, CD163, and D240. For comparative purpose, 15 radicular cysts (CRs) and 7 pericoronal follicles (PFs) were included.
RESULTS: There was an increase in MCs for RCs a…

Demineralized bone matrix has been tested in a clinical study concerning the filling of bone defects in the surgical stomatology. It is reported on the clinical results and the X-ray evaluation of the replacement of bones by demineralized bone matrix. Fifty two implantations in the maxilla and mandible of 51 patients were carried out to be able to evaluate the efficacy of demineralized bone matrix.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to compare the immunohistochemical detection of receptor activator nuclear κB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs), solid ameloblastomas (SAs), and keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOTs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 20 RCs, 20 DCs, 20 KOTs, 14 dental follicles (DFs), and 18 SAs were evaluated by immunohistochemistry using anti-RANKL and anti-OPG antibodies. The analysis was quantitative, and the number of positive cells was counted in 10 microscopic high-power fields (400×).
RESULTS: The DFs…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of collagen IV, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 9 and tissue inhibitor of MMP (TIMP) 2 in dentigerous cysts (DCs), radicular cysts (RCs), keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOTs), and ameloblastomas.
STUDY DESIGN: Twenty cases of DCs, 20 RCs, 20 KOTs, and 20 ameloblastomas were selected and analyzed by immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: Most DCs and RCs showed continuous and >50% staining for collagen IV in the basement membrane of the epithelium, whereas predominantly discontinuous thin and ≤ 50% staining was obser…

Introduction: Dentigerous cysts are the second most prevalent type of odontogenic cyst, following radicular cysts, and are primarily associated with impacted teeth. These cysts are most commonly associated with impacted third molars and canines. Notably, approximately 5% of dentigerous cysts are found in conjunction with supernumerary teeth, predominantly mesiodens. Between 1964 and April 2025, only about 51 cases of dentigerous cysts related to impacted mesiodens have been reported in the literature. This article presents three additional cases, accompanied by a concise literature review. Cas…

METHODS: Fifty-eight human periapical tissues, including periapical granulomas (PGs, n = 28), radicular cysts (RCs, n = 24), and healthy control tissues (control group, n = 6) were collected. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in periapical cyst and periapical granuloma by comparison with the expression in the normal periodontal tissue as control, and to identify their functional mechanism in the bone destruction of periapical cyst and granuloma.
METHODS: 20 periapical cyst tissues (cyst group), 20 periapical granuloma tissues (granuloma group), and 20 normal periodontal tissues (control group) were collected respectively. Immunohistochemical technology was performed to detect the express

OBJECTIVE: This study attempted to clarify whether differential immunocytokeratin expression occurs in cystic and epithelialized noncystic lesions.
STUDY DESIGN: From January 2003 to June 2004, periapical surgery was carried out on 70 teeth, collecting 70 histologic samples. Serial sections of original histologic slices were prepared for immunostaining. The antibodies used were against cytokeratins CK7, AE1, AE3, AE1-3, and CAM52. The intensity of staining was evaluated as follows: 0 = no cells stained; 1 = weak staining (11%-25%); 2 = moderate staining (26%-75%); and 3 = intense staining (>o

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare tumor arising from the pleura or peritoneum. Distant hematogenous metastasis is seen in more than half of cases, preferentially to the brain, lung, bone and soft tissues [Br. J. Dis. Chest 70 (1976) 246]. There has been only one previous report of this tumor metastasizing to the jaw bone [Pathologica 92 (2000) 273].

The diagnosis and therapeutic approach to periapical cysts is an extremely controversial concern for dentists. Furthermore, as this complaint represents the most frequent cystic lesion of the maxilla, together with the fact that its differential diagnosis with chronic apical periodontitis presents special difficulty, the question takes on even greater importance. The purpose of this article is to assess the validity of the various diagnostic techniques used to differentiate between both pathologies and make a critical analysis of the controversy surrounding the therapeutic approach to suspecte

An unusual case of plasmacytoma mimicking a large periapical cyst in the anterior maxilla is described. Of the involved teeth, 22 was discoloured and had an open, immature apex, a feature strongly suggestive of the lesion being of pulpal origin. The case was treated by a conservative endodontic approach, but failed to show any improvement. Apical surgery comprising complete enucleation of the cystic lesion and extraction of the involved tooth was carried out. The unexpected histopathological finding was a plasmacytoma.

The clinical and radiographic features of a group of apical periodontal cysts associated with endodontically treated deciduous molar teeth have been previously reported. The histological description and histochemical investigation of distinctive intraepithelial inclusions are described in this paper. The chronic inflammatory response is dominated by plasma cells and the wall contains an amorphous, eosinophilic material that is shown to contain phenolic groupings similar to those present in the intracanal medicaments used clinically. A direct relationship is proposed between the inclusions, con
