Intraperitoneal adhesion formation is a major cause of infertility and/or intestinal obstruction. Among the many well-known aetiological factors responsible for peritoneal inflammatory reaction is surgical glove powder; for example, cornstarch powder. Clinical states in which angiotensin II is increased are often associated with increases in mineralocorticoids. To determine the effects of mineralocorticoids on angiotensin II action, we examined the effects of aldosterone on angiotensin II receptor expression and function in cultured rat vascular smooth muscle cells. Incubation with aldosterone resulted in concentration- and time-dependent increases in angiotensin II receptor number, without changes in binding affinity. For example, incubation with 1 microM aldosterone for 40 hours resulted in 59% increases in angiotensin II receptor number.

This study evaluates the effect of crushing load on functional recovery of the sciatic nerve. A congenital diverticulum of the ileum (Meckel's diverticulum), approximately 10 mm long, was detected in a rat and examined histologically. The histological findings were basically the same as in the ileum. Although Meckel's diverticulum is uncommon in the rat, the present report demonstrated the possibility of discovering new cases.

We have studied metabolic pathways of serotonin in epiphysis of Wistar male rats at the age of 1; 1,5; 2; 3; 6; 12; 24 and 36 months. Epiphysis retains its functional activity throughout the life, however, serotonin metabolism in epiphysis undergoes marked changes. The main regulatory principle is the switch of serotonin metabolic pathways in the pineal gland. Most distinct changes between hydroxy- and methoxyindols in epiphysis have been observed during the periods of age-associated hormonal rearrangements like sexual maturation or involution of the gonad function at the old age.

The presence of kallikrein mRNA has been reported in the pineal gland of rats. Using an antibody to rat tissue kallikrein, we immunohistochemically examined the localization of cell components producing tissue kallikrein in this gland. The kallikrein immunoreactive cells were scattered in the parenchyma of the pineal gland. Their cell bodies were polymorphic with cell processes and a large nucleus similar to that of the pinealocyte. Frequently immunoreactive materials were seen to be localized in the perivascular areas.

This experimental study on 15 adult male rats with bilateral epididymovasostomies evaluates a new technique of tubule intussusception as an improved form of end-to-end anastomosis. This paper describes in detail the steps in this technique and offers physiological, anatomical, and histological follow-up after 3 months. With this technique there is a 97% patency rate and a 23.3% incidence of macroscopic spermatic granuloma. Complications are discussed in detail.

The immunohistochemical distribution of the alpha 1, alpha 2 and alpha 3 subunit of the gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABAA) receptor was investigated in the rat brain using affinity-purified antibodies against unique parts of the amino acid sequence of the respective subunits. The distribution of the 3 subunits differed markedly from each other indicating heterogeneity of the GABAA-receptor composition in different brain regions and at various receptive compartments (dendrites or somata) of neuronal cells.

Lacrimal gland acini were isolated utilizing a non-enzymatic dissociation procedure. This method resulted in the rapid isolation of an enriched population of acini from rat lacrimal gland with a complete absence of interlobular and rare occurrence of intralobular duct epithelium. The toxic effect of Cyclosporin A (CS-A) (1.25-50.0 mg/kg body weight) on the endocrine pancreas of Wistar rats was morphologically investigated. The effect of thiamine deficiency on insulin biosynthesis was studied. In thiamine deficient rats the total pancreatic protein content was not altered when compared to control rats whereas the pancreatic insulin content was decreased. The present study was undertaken to establish whether anemia plays a role in the cardiomegaly and myocardial pathology of copper deficiency. The conversion of estrone sulfate (E1S) to estrone (E1) was measured during the in vitro incubation of the labeled sulfoconjugate with implantation sites (IS) and nonimplanted regions (NIS) of uterine horns from 6-day pregnant rats. Extensive metabolism of E1S occurred in both tissues, being noticeably less (29.31%) in IS than in NIS. Estrogen sulfatase activity present in the uterus of ovariectomized virgin rats was found to be higher than in both uterine regions of the pregnant rats. Hyperventilation/hypocapnia increases renal phosphate reabsorption and decreases the phosphaturic effect of parathyroid hormone (PTH).
