Cardiac functions in children with growth hormone deficiency before and during growth hormone-replacement therapy.

Childhood growth hormone deficiency (GHD) decreases left-ventricular (LV) mass, but impairment of cardiac function has never been documented. The objective of this study was to assess the cardiac effects of GHD and recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment using conventional echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging. Complete two-dimensional, M-mode, pulse-wave Doppler echocardiography and pulse-wave tissue Doppler imaging were performed in 12 children (6 male and 6 female patients) with GHD at baseline and at 5.86 ± 1.61 months after rhGH therapy. Recombinant human growth hormone tr

Early detection of Fabry cardiomyopathy by tissue Doppler imaging.

BACKGROUND: Fabry cardiomyopathy is diagnosed by detection of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in patients with alpha-Galactosidase A deficiency. Conventional noninvasive tools are unable to provide a preclinical diagnosis allowing prompt institution of enzymatic therapy. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied three groups of patients: 10 patients with causal mutations for Fabry disease and LVH, 10 mutation-positive patients without LV, and 10 healthy relatives without causal mutations and no LVH. All patients with LVH and 6 patients with Fabry disease without LVH with complex repetitive ventricul

[Treatment of tension headache].

The scientific basis of tension- type headache suffers from the lack of precise pathophysiological knowledge and the heterogenecity of this disorder. Treatment of acute tension-type headache episodes is more effective with an NSAIDs (ibuprofen 400-800mg, naproxen 550-825mg, ketoprofen 50-75mg) than with aspirin or paracetamol. Caffein containing preparations of NSAIDs are slightly superior, but should not be taken frequently to avoid headache chronification. For chronic tension-type headache, relaxation therapies with EMG biofeedback and tricyclics have about the same efficacy rate of 40-50p.1

Optimizing Non-Pharmacological Support for Perinatal Mental Health: A Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis of Intervention Effects by Pregnancy/Postpartum Stage.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Non-pharmacological interventions for perinatal mental health lack personalized guidance tailored to the distinct stages of pregnancy. To address this evidence gap, this study employed a network meta-analysis, aiming to identify the optimal non-pharmacological intervention strategies for the perinatal period. FINDINGS: The analysis included 153 RCTs. For prenatal patients, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) proved most effective for depression (SMD = -1.27, 95% CI = -1.98, -0.55), while mindfulness was most effective for anxiety (SMD = -1.44, 95% CI = -2.11, -0.77). A quantitative MR imaging assessment of leukoencephalopathy in children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia without irradiation.

PURPOSE: Intravenous methotrexate (IV-MTX), an effective treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), has a significant toxic effect on the central nervous system, with leukoencephalopathy (LE) being the most common form. The purpose of this study was to use objective quantitative MR imaging to prospectively assess the temporal evolution of LE extent and intensity. METHODS: Forty-five children (low-risk, 10 mol/L/12F; mean age, 5.0 years at diagnosis; standard/high-risk, 11 mol/L/12F; mean age, 9.2 years at diagnosis) treated for ALL on a single institutional protocol were evaluated long

Effectiveness of Benson's relaxation and Mitchell's relaxation along with conventional physiotherapy exercise on pain, urinary incontinence, sleep quality, and activities of daily living in lower segmental cesarean section: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic exercises that help reduce stress and anxiety, both mentally and physically, are called relaxation techniques. In order to ascertain the benefits of the two relaxation techniques on pain, urine incontinence, sleep quality, and activities of daily living, this study will compare them with the conventional physiotherapy exercise in lower segmental cesarean sections (LSCS). METHODS: Forty-six LSCS subjects with pain, urine incontinence, sleep quality, and activities of daily life will participate in a comparative study that is a blinded (statistical) analysis. Internet-based acceptance and commitment therapy for obsessive-compulsive symptoms: A randomized controlled trial.

Subthreshold obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) are associated with increased distress, help seeking behaviours, and functional problems, and may predict progression into further mental health problems. This study investigated the effectiveness of a four-module internet-based acceptance and commitment therapy (iACT) for adults with OCS compared to internet-based progressive relaxation training (iPRT). Eighty-nine adults with OCS participated in a single-blinded randomised controlled trial of iACT or iPRT. Self-report assessments of OCS, psychological flexibility, and quality of life, among ot

Relaxation techniques for pain management in labour.

BACKGROUND: Many women would like to avoid pharmacological or invasive methods of pain management in labour and this may contribute to the popularity of complementary methods of pain management. This review examined currently available evidence on the use of relaxation therapies for pain management in labour. This is an update of a review first published in 2011. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of mind-body relaxation techniques for pain management in labour on maternal and neonatal well-being during and after labour. SEARCH METHODS: We searched Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth's Trials

Depression and Anxiety Changes Associated with Matched Increases in Physical Activity in Education-, Self-Regulation-, and Self-Regulation Plus Relaxation-Based Obesity Treatments in Women: A Pilot Study Investigating Implications for Controlling Emotional Eating.

Background/Objectives: Improvements in depression and anxiety, associated with moderate increases in physical activity, might induce reductions in emotional eating, especially in women with obesity, where emotion-driven eating is highly problematic. This pilot, field-based study sought to assess whether physical activity increase, itself, primarily predicts improved mood (biochemical theories) or if psychosocial factors associated with cognitive-behavioral treatment are principal correlates (behavioral theories). An aim was to inform improved treatment processes. Methods: Women with obesity pa

A framework for treating partner aggressive women.

Women are increasingly referred to intervention programs to address their use of physical violence against intimate partners. This article reviews the scant treatment outcome and attrition literature for partner aggressive women and describes important characteristics of partner aggressive women that must be taken into consideration in designing treatment. Recommended treatment modules are described in detail and include skill-building to enhance safety planning, conflict management, emotional regulation, communication and negotiation, and stress management. Additional modules should be includ
