[A case of pontine hemorrhage presenting with abnormal vertical ocular movements].

A 52-year-old woman was admitted to hospital because of sudden loss of consciousness. Neurological examination on admission revealed a comat … hose of a float pulled by a fish, we propose they be termed ocular floating. The paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF) is believed to excite the burst neurons of the rosral interstitial nucleus of medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF) responsible for upward gaze and inhibit those for downward gaze. This role was suggested by the clinical observation that a p …

Mapping Fos-immunoreactive neurons activated by intra-oral infusion of quinine, sucrose or water throughout the brain of B6 mice.

Fos immunohistochemistry was used to identify neurons in taste-related brain areas throughout the B6 mouse brain activated by intra-oral (IO) infusion of 3.0 mM quinine hydrochloride (Q), 1.0 M sucrose (S) or filtered water (W). IO infusion of Q and S elicited more Fos-immunoreactive (Fos-IR) neurons than W in the central medial (CM) and dorsomedial (DM) subareas of the parabrachial nucleus (PBN) and the central medial (CeM) amygdala (ps < 0.05). Infusion of Q led to more Fos expression than W in the central lateral (CL) PBN and the parvocellular reticular formation (PCRT; ps < 0.05). The only…

Descending Brainstem Systems Contribute to Ankle Clonus in Humans with Spinal Cord Injury.

Ankle clonus is a sustained, involuntary, rhythmic muscle contraction frequently observed in humans with spinal cord injury (SCI). Although … tions in reaction time to a loud acoustic stimulus are thought to reflect descending drive from the reticular formation, measured in the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles. We studied males and females with chronic SCI, both with and without ankle clonus, using standardized clinical tests across 2 d. Participants with clonus showed elevated H/M ratios, indicating i …

Elaboration of Cortical Pyramidal Dendrites Requires Dephosphorylation of Signal Regulatory Protein α by Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase δ.

Protein tyrosine phosphatase δ (PTPδ) is involved in Sema3A-induced dendritic elaboration of cortical pyramidal neurons through the activation of Fyn tyrosine kinase. However, the in vivo substrates of PTPδ remain largely unknown. Phosphotyrosine proteome analysis of Ptpδ -/- mice brains from both male and female revealed that signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα) was hyperphosphorylated at the carboxy-terminal Tyr501 residue in the knock-outs. Immunohistochemistry with anti-phospho-Tyr501 SIRPα antibody showed the hyperphosphorylation of SIRPα in various regions including the olfactory nerve la

Lethal Interactions of neuronal networks in epilepsy mediated by both synaptic and volume transmission indicate approaches to prevention.

Neuronal network interactions are important in normal brain physiology and also in brain disorders. Many mesoscopic networks, including the … response involves interactions between auditory and locomotor networks, and also includes brainstem reticular formation (BRF) nuclei, which participate in many different networks. In the fear-potentiated startle paradigm this network interacts positively with the amygdala, induced by conditioning. Seizure networks can interact negatively with the respiratory network, …

Long-term follow-up of a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis of the cervical spine with pulmonary involvement.

Unlike Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) involving the skull, LCH of the vertebrae and lungs requires careful long-term follow-up because of the risks of motor and respiratory dysfunction; however, few reports have addressed this issue. A boy aged 7 years 7 months presented with bilateral shoulder pain and neck pain. Initial imaging revealed C6 vertebral bone lysis, a mass spanning C5-C7, C6 vertebral body flattening, and epidural extension. Chest radiographs and CT scans showed diffuse reticular and funicular shadows, ground-glass opacities, interlobular septal thickening, and swollen hilar

The Bed Nucleus of the Stria Terminalis-Deep Mesencephalic Nucleus Circuit Linking Emotion and Wakefulness.

The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), a part of the extended amygdala, integrates emotional and arousal-related signals. While GABAergic BNST (GABABNST) neurons have been implicated in promoting transitions from non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep to wakefulness, their downstream mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we identify a neuronal circuit through which GABABNST neurons promote arousal via projections to a midbrain region known as the deep mesencephalic nucleus (DpMe), located within the broader mesencephalic reticular formation. In male mice, we used a combination of optogenetics…

Activation of TLR9 signaling suppresses the immunomodulating functions of CD55lo fibroblastic reticular cells during bacterial peritonitis.

Fibroblastic reticular cells (FRCs) are a subpopulation of stromal cells modulating the immune environments in health and disease. We have previously shown that activation of TLR9 signaling in FRC in fat-associated lymphoid clusters (FALC) regulate peritoneal immunity via suppressing immune cell recruitment and peritoneal resident macrophage (PRM) retention. However, FRCs are heterogeneous across tissues and organs. The functions of each FRC subset and the regulation of TLR9 in distinct FRC subsets are unknown. Here, we confirmed that specific deletion of TLR9 in FRC improved bacterial clearan

The development of in vitro organotypic 3D vulvar models to study tumor-stroma interaction and drug efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) is a rare disease with a poor prognosis. To date, there's no proper in vitro modeling system for VSCC to study its pathogenesis or for drug evaluation. METHODS: We established healthy vulvar (HV)- and VSCC-like 3D full thickness models (FTMs) to observe the tumor-stroma interaction and their applicability for chemotherapeutic efficacy examination. VSCC-FTMs were developed by seeding VSCC tumor cell lines (A431 and HTB117) onto dermal matrices harboring two NF subtypes namely papillary fibroblasts (PFs) and reticular fibroblasts (RFs), or cance

Pythium insidiosum keratitis - A review.

Pythium insidiosum is an oomycete and is also called "parafungus" as it closely mimics fungal keratitis. The last decade saw an unprecedented surge in Pythium keratitis cases, especially from Asia and India, probably due to growing research on the microorganism and improved diagnostic and treatment modalities. The clinical features such as subepithelial infiltrate, cotton wool-like fluffy stromal infiltrate, satellite lesions, corneal perforation, endoexudates, and anterior chamber hypopyon closely resemble fungus. The classical clinical features of Pythium that distinguish it from other micro

Pneumocystis pneumonia in patients with HIV infection: clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and radiological features.

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) remains the most common opportunistic infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Familiarity with the clinical features of PCP is crucial for prompt diagnosis, even if the patient is unaware of their HIV serostatus. We describe herein the clinical features of 34 episodes in 32 patients with AIDS-associated PCP and review the existing literature. As for symptoms, the frequency of fever, cough, and dyspnea was 74%, 74%, and 65%, respectively, and the complete triad was present in only 14 of the 34 episodes on first examination. Median durat
