[Primary retroperitoneal hydatid cyst].

Hydatid cysts cause diseases most frequently by localizing in the liver and the lungs. Hydatid cysts with retroperitoneal localization are very rare. A 45-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with complaints of back pain, weight loss, and fatigue. The computerized tomography (CT) revealed that the patient had a septated cystic lesion of about 8x7x6 cm localized in the posterior of the left kidney, in the paravertebral site causing destruction of the neighboring costa. During laparotomy, the wall of the cyst with retroperitoneal localization was partially excised and the remaining

Technical modifications of double-J stenting for retroperitoneal laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty in children under 5 years old.

Both antegrade stenting and retrograde stenting for retroperitoneal laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty in children have many disadvantages. In this work, we tried using an alternative technique of modified antegrade (MAG) double-J stenting for retroperitoneal laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty in children under 5 years old, analyzed our results using the conventional antegrade (CAG) and the MAG techniques of stent insertion for this procedure, and reported our experience with these techniques. Between December 2002 and July 2010, 77 children under 5 years old with ureteropelvic junction ob

Anterior abdominal wall abscess with epididymo-orchitis: an unusual presentation of acute pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis indicates inflammation of the pancreas. Clinically acute pancreatitis typically presents as upper abdominal pain mostly in epigastric region, nausea, vomiting and elevated levels of amylase and lipase. Depending upon severity of acute pancreatitis patient may presents with minimal symptoms to more severe signs of acute abdomen like generalized guarding and rigidity. Inspite of absence of disease-specific signs and symptoms for acute pancreatitis, diagnosis is usually not difficult using a combination of clinical, laboratory and radiological findings. Sometimes pancreatitis may pre

Retroperitoneal laparoscopic upper-pole nephroureterectomy for duplex kidney anomalies in adult patients.

OBJECTIVES: To present our surgical techniques and experience with retroperitoneal laparoscopic upper pole nephroureterectomy for a duplex kidney in adult patients without vesicoureteral reflux. METHODS: A total of 32 adult patients with a duplex kidney underwent laparoscopic upper pole nephroureterectomy. A 3-port, finger- and balloon-dissecting, retroperitoneal approach was used. The upper pole renal parenchyma was divided circumferentially between the upper and lower poles using a harmonic scalpel, maintaining a margin around the upper pole parenchyma to avoid any possible injury to the lo

[Management of retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer].

The standard management for advanced-stage epithelial ovarian cancer is optimum cytoreductive surgery followed by aggressive cytotoxic chemotherapy. However retroperitoneal remains controversial. The multiple directions of the lymph drainage pathway in ovarian cancer have been recognized. The incidence and pattern of lymph node involvement depends on the extent of disease progression and the histological type. Thus, it is difficult to specify a single node as the sentinel node. In this chapter, we review and discuss the actual benefits of lymph node dissection in patients with ovarian cancer,

Bilateral retroperitoneoscopic lumbar sympathectomy by unilateral access for plantar hyperhidrosis in women.

OBJECTIVES: Primary focal hyperhidrosis is a disorder of excessive, bilateral, and relatively symmetric sweating occurring in the axillae, palms, soles, or craniofacial region. Armpits are affected in 51% of patients, feet in 29%, palms in 25%, and the face in 20%. There is a wide range of nonsurgical and surgical treatments available for patients with focal hyperhidrosis. Surgical treatments for plantar hyperhidrosis include thoracic and/or lumbar sympathectomy. In this article, we report on a new technique of bilateral retroperitoneoscopic lumbar sympathectomy by unilateral access for planta

[Wunderlich syndrome. Clinical and therapeutic aspects of a long-term experience].

INTRODUCTION: Wunderlich's syndrome is defined as a clinical manifestation secondary to sudden spontaneous rupture of renal parenchyma in the absence of injury, resulting in hemoretroperitoneum. This syndrome may occur in patients with benign or malignant neoplasm of the kidney, arterial venous fistulae, immunovasculitis and other phlogosis of the kidney. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present 19 cases of acute spontaneous hemoretroperitoneum or Wunderlich's syndrome diagnosed from 1996 to 2009, related to the following conditions: 7 renal carcinomas, 4 angiomyolipomas, 2 adrenal hemorrhages, 1 bl

Adrenal and pancreatic presentation of subdiaphragmatic retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts.

Bronchogenic cysts are aberrations of normal development throughout the embryonic foregut; abdominal or retroperitoneal presentations are rare. They will often present a diagnostic dilemma because their appearance can mimic other, more common diagnoses. The initial work-up, differential diagnosis, management, and follow-up may present clinical challenges. We present 1 case of an adrenal lesion and 1 case of a pancreatic lesion that were revealed to be retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts after surgical extirpation.

Is retroperitoneoscopy the gold standard for endoscopic nephrectomy in children on peritoneal dialysis?

PURPOSE: The literature on minimally invasive nephrectomy in adults and children on peritoneal dialysis is sparse. Case reports suggest that the transperitoneal approach is effective. We present our experience with retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy in children on peritoneal dialysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At 11 consecutive retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomies a total of 14 kidneys were removed from 10 children with a mean age of 12 years. We used a 3-port lateral retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy technique with active trainee participation. Preoperative and postoperative biochemistry results wit

[A case of retroperitoneal Mullerian cyst resected laparoscopically].

A 67-year-old female patient had a cystic mass, 6 cm in diameter, which was incidentally detected on the dorsal side of the cecum in the retroperitoneum. A laparoscopic tumor excision was performed. Microscopically, the majority of the cystic wall consisted of Mullerian type serous epithelium, partially including the columnar epithelium containing round nuclei and mucin production. The columnar epithelium was similar to the uterocervical epithelium, and there was proliferation of dense collagen fibers resembling ovarian stroma under the epithelium. These microscopic findings were consistent wi

Clinical anatomy study of autonomic nerve with respective to the anterior approach lumbar surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Male genital dysfunction was recognized as a complication following anterior approach lumbar surgery. Disruption of efferent sympathetic pathways such as the abdominal aortic plexus (AAP) and superior hypogastric plexus (SHP) which lied pre-abdominal aorta and iliac artery had been thought as the main reason. Though there were some clinical reports of retrograde ejaculation, the applied anatomic study of the autonomic nerve anterior to the lumbar was little. The purpose was to find out a lumbar surgery approach which was ejaculation preservation through the detailed study of the

Abdominoscrotal hydrocele: its particular characteristics.

Abdominoscrotal hydrocele (ASH) is an unusual condition characterized by a large scrotal hydrocele which communicates in an hourglass fashion with an abdominal component through the inguinal canal. Based on previous clinical observations, we believed that ASH is a condition that begins as a large scrotal hydrocele during the neonatal period and later expands first into the inguinal canal and finally into the abdominal cavity during the next few months of life. We report a case series of ASH and point out its distinctive characteristics.

Giant malignant ovarian fibrothecoma involved with retroperitoneal structures mimicking a retroperitoneal sarcoma.

INTRODUCTION: Ovary is located inside peritoneal cavity. However, a huge malignant ovarian tumor may get involved with retroperitoneal structures. CASE REPORT: We reported a case of a 70-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of increased abdominal distention and was subsequently found to have a giant abdominal mass. A huge low signal intensity mass with the involvement of retroperitoneal structures was showed on MRI. At operation, we found that the tumor pushed mesentery and small bowel upwards with the encasement of 10 cm jejunum and was fixed posteriorly to vena cava, aorta, right

[A case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor recognized in the retroperitoneum and the kidney].

A 61-year-old man consulted his local physician because of abdominal pain and was referred to our hospital after bilateral renal tumors were suspected on CT. CT and MRI showed a tumor, approximately 3 cm in diameter in the right renal pelvis and a cyst in the left kidney. There were no malignant cells detected on cytological studies of two urine specimens that were voided commonly and obtained from the right renal pelvis, respectively. Under a diagnosis of right renal pelvic tumor, the patient underwent laparoscopic right nephroureterectomy. Pathological examination demonstrated two inflammato
