Root exudate-mediated assemblage of rhizo-microbiome enhances Fusarium wilt suppression in chrysanthemum.

Intercropping is emerging as a sustainable strategy to manage soil-borne diseases, yet the underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive. Her … -gingerol, greatly promoted the proliferation and colonization of Burkholderia sp. in chrysanthemum rhizosphere, conferring the enhanced disease suppression. Metabolomic profiling revealed that ginger root exudates stimulated the release of specific metabolites by chrysanthemum roots, which promoted the growth and biofilm formation of Burkholderia sp. Our fin …

Dual activity of Serratia marcescens Pt-3 in phosphate-solubilizing and production of antifungal volatiles.

BACKGROUND: Soil fertility decline and pathogen infection are severe issues for crop production all over the world. Microbes as inherent factors in soil were effective in alleviating fertility decrease, promoting plant growth and controlling plant pathogens et al. Thus, screening microbes with fertility improving and pathogen controlling properties is of great importance to humans. RESULTS: Bacteria Pt-3 isolated from tea rhizosphere showed multiple functions in solubilizing insoluble phosphate, promoting plant growth, producing abundant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and inhibiting the gr…

Interaction of ammonium nutrition with essential mineral cations.

Plant growth and development depend on sufficient nutrient availability in soils. Agricultural soils are generally nitrogen (N) deficient, a … ition, NH4+ uptake and assimilation provoke the acidification of the cell external medium (apoplast/rhizosphere), which has a clear impact on nutrient availability. This review summarizes current knowledge, at both the physiological and the molecular level, of the interaction of NH4+ nutrition with essential mineral elements that are absorbed as cations, both …

Screening and characterization of biocontrol bacteria isolated from Ageratum conyzoides against Collectotrichum fructicola causing Chinese plum (Prunus salicina Lindl.) anthracnose.

Chinese plum (Prunus salicina Lindl.) is a nutritionally and economically important stone fruit widely grown around the world. Anthracnose, caused by Collectotrichum spp., is one of the primary biotic stress factors limiting plum production. Medicinal plants may harbor rhizospheric or endophytic microorganisms that produce bioactive metabolites that can be used as anthracnose biocontrol agents. Here, 27 bacterial isolates from the medicinal plant A. conyzoides with diverse antagonistic activities against C. fructicola were screened. Based on morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molec

Genomic and Experimental Analysis of the Biostimulant and Antagonistic Properties of Phytopathogens of Bacillus safensis and Bacillus siamensis.

The B. safensis RGM 2450 and B. siamensis RGM 2529 strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of plants presenting resilience to abiotic and biotic stress conditions. To understand the implications of bacteria in resilience, a genomic and experimental analysis was carried out on their biostimulant and phytopathogenic antagonist properties. Genome analyses of both strains indicated that they have the potential to synthesize bioactive compounds such as the battery of non-ribosomal peptides, polyketides, extracellular enzymes and phytohormones. These results were consistent with the antagonistic …

Influence of vegetation type and temperature on the performance of constructed wetlands for nutrient removal.

In this study, the influence of vegetation type and environmental temperature on performance of constructed wetlands (CWs) was investigated. … en the average temperature dropped to 19.8 °C. Additionally, the variations of urease activities in rhizosphere soil tended to decrease with the decreasing temperature. Overall, a substantial enhancement for nitrogen and TP removal in polyculture (Canna indica + Lythrum salicaria) was observed. In conclusion, CW cultivated with polyculture was a good strategy …

The revisited genome of Pseudomonas putida KT2440 enlightens its value as a robust metabolic chassis.

By the time the complete genome sequence of the soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida KT2440 was published in 2002 (Nelson et al., ) this bacterium was considered a potential agent for environmental bioremediation of industrial waste and a good colonizer of the rhizosphere. However, neither the annotation tools available at that time nor the scarcely available omics data-let alone metabolic modeling and other nowadays common systems biology approaches-allowed them to anticipate the astonishing capacities that are encoded in the genetic complement of this unique microorganism. In this work we have …

Effects of co-cropping Bidens pilosa (L.) and Tagetes minuta (L.) on bioaccumulation of Pb in Lactuca sativa (L.) growing in polluted agricultural soils.

Polluted agricultural soils are a serious problem for food safety, with phytoremediation being the most favorable alternative from the envir … nd Zn (B. pilosa, r = 0.91; T. minuta, r = 0.91). Our results indicate that the interaction between rhizospheres increased the phytoextraction of lead, which was accompanied by an increase in the biomass of the phytoextractor species. However, the consumption of lettuce still revealed a toxicological risk from Pb in all treatments.

Rhizoxin analogs contribute to the biocontrol activity of a newly isolated pseudomonas strain.

Two strains of Pseudomonas sp., Os17 and St29, were newly isolated from the rhizosphere of rice and potato, respectively, by screening for 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol producers. These strains were found to be the same species and were the closest to but different from Pseudomonas protegens among the sequenced pseudomonads, based on 16S ribosomal RNA gene and whole-genome analyses. Strain Os17 was as effective a biocontrol agent as reported for P. protegens Cab57, whereas strain St29 was less effective. The whole-genome sequences of these strains were obtained: the genomes are organized into a s…

Phytoremediation of mercury- and methyl mercury-contaminated sediments by water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes).

Phytoremediation has the potential for implementation at mercury- (Hg) and methylHg (MeHg)-contaminated sites. Water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) were investigated for their ability to assimilate Hg and MeHg into plant biomass, in both aquatic and sediment-associated forms, over a 68-day hydroponic study. The suitability of E. crassipes to assimilate both Hg and MeHg was evaluated under differing phosphate (PO4) concentrations, light intensities, and sediment:aqueous phase contamination ratios. Because aquatic rhizospheres have the ability to enhance MeHg formation, the level of MeHg in wa…

The beneficial effect of Trichoderma spp. on tomato is modulated by the plant genotype.

Rhizosphere-competent fungi of the genus Trichoderma are widely used as biofertilizers and biopesticides in commercial formulates because of the multiple beneficial effects on plant growth and disease resistance. In this work, we demonstrate that genetic variability among wild and cultivated tomato lines affects the outcome of the interaction with two 'elite' biocontrol strains of T. atroviride and T. harzianum. The beneficial response, which included enhanced growth and systemic resistance against Botrytis cinerea, was clearly evident for some, but not all, the tested lines. At least in one c…

Review of Current Techniques for Tracking as Behavior Across Micro-Interfaces in Paddy.

Arsenic (As) in rice poses health risks, and the soil micro-interface is the key zone controlling As transformation and migration in the soil-water-rice system. Sharp redox transitions along the soil-water interface and rhizosphere cause simultaneous millimeter-scale changes in redox-sensitive elements like Fe and As, influenced by disturbances such as overlying water changes. These factors make it challenging to track As behavior across soil micro-interfaces. Sampling techniques like soil slicing and the Rhizon sampler provide limited information on As due to their low-resolution (cm level) a…
