Sex/gender differences in specific spatial tasks are well documented, with the male advantage in the Mental Rotations Test (MRT) being one of the largest effects reported in psychological research. Numerous potential contributing factors have been examined, with recent studies highlighting the importance of individuals' beliefs in their spatial abilities. However, no study has directly manipulated these self-perceptions to assess their causal impact on cognitive performance. The present study investigated whether randomized normative feedback could alter participants' levels of spatial anxiety

BACKGROUND: The Call of the Void phenomenon describes an inexplicable urge to consider dangerous or self-destructive actions in certain situations. Previous studies have focused on the high place phenomenon (HPP), which is the sudden urge to jump from high places. One aim of this study is to replicate the previously found associations of HPP with suicidality and anxiety in a larger sample of patients suffering from flight phobia or agoraphobia. Furthermore, the influence of personality traits and protective factors, such as self-efficacy and self-esteem, will be examined to identify associatio

OBJECTIVE: Stigma impedes the HIV care continuum and contributes to problematic mental health outcomes, nonadherence, and reduced quality of life. We prospectively analyzed changes in HIV stigma measures for 10 years among older people with HIV (PWH).
DESIGN: PWH participating in the AGE h IV Cohort Study completed the full Berger HIV Stigma Scale (HSS) between 2012 and 2014 (T0) and 2 of the HSS subscales-that is, disclosure concerns and negative self-image (range per subscale: 3 to 12)-10 years later (T1) as part of routine clinical care.
METHODS: We assessed changes in scores over time us

Identity disturbance is increasingly considered to drive personality disorder (PD) onset. Previous research has investigated how identity relates to PD using either self-report scales or narratives to assess identity. Few studies have investigated how both operationalizations relate to one another and to models of PD. More so, no study has investigated whether a narrative identity assessment offers additional explanatory power in understanding PD, beyond what is captured by a self-rated identity assessment, or vice versa. We aimed to address these gaps by administering a rating scale measuring

BACKGROUND: The Malay version of the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire has been validated for use by Malaysian adolescents. Although Malay is their national language, English is widely used as the lingua franca among Malaysians of different ethnicities. This study aimed to validate an English version of the PIDAQ adapted for use by Malaysian adolescents to optimize data capture from adolescents who prefer English as the medium for communication.
METHODS: The published English version of PIDAQ was pilot tested on 12- to 17-year-old adolescents, resulting in a few modificat

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of confidence that senior-level oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) residents have in the management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, determine their exposure to various invasive TMJ procedures during training, and assess their confidence in performing those procedures on completion of residency.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was designed, and a link to a University of Illinois at Chicago Qualtrics Survey platform (Qualtrics, Provo, UT) was e-mailed to all program directors at Commission on Dental Accreditation-

Hilde Bruch (1978) was one of the first to describe the phenomenon of anorectic patients experiencing a critical inner voice. Although several qualitative studies regarding eating disorder patients report this experience, few quantitative studies have been conducted in which hearing voices was examined in eating disorder patients. This motivated us to investigate whether eating disorder patients (N = 74) experience critical inner voices significantly more often than a healthy control group (N = 58). Is voice hearing related to the severity of the eating disorder and to low self-esteem and high

AIM: To describe experiences of recovery from bulimia nervosa among young adult women.
BACKGROUND: Most studies into recovery from eating disorders focus on anorexia nervosa, although some include both anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Recovery has been described as beginning with renewed self-esteem.
DESIGN: Qualitative interview study.
METHODS: Fourteen women were invited to participate; five women, between 23-26 years of age, who assessed themselves as healthy for at least 2 years agreed to take part in narrative interviews. Tape-recorded interviews lasting 45-60 minutes (median 49 minutes)

Many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adolescents disclose their sexual and/or gender identities to peers at school. Disclosure of LGBT status is linked with positive psychosocial adjustment for adults; however, for adolescents, "coming out" has been linked to school victimization, which in turn is associated with negative adjustment. This study investigates the associations among adolescent disclosure of LGBT status to others at school, school victimization, and young adult psychosocial adjustment using a sample of 245 LGBT young adults (aged 21-25 years, living in California).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A negative self-view is a prominent factor in most cognitive vulnerability models of depression and anxiety. Recently, there has been increased attention to differentiate between the implicit (automatic) and the explicit (reflective) processing of self-related evaluations. This longitudinal study aimed to test the association between implicit and explicit self-esteem and symptoms of adolescent depression and social anxiety disorder. Two complementary models were tested: the vulnerability model and the scarring effect model.
METHOD: Participants were 1641 first and s

Previous studies have demonstrated significant relationships among various cognitive variables such as negative cognition, self-efficacy, and social anxiety. Unfortunately, few studies focus on the role of cognition among youth, and researchers often fail to use domain-specific measures when examining cognitive variables. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine domain-specific cognitive variables (i.e., socially oriented negative self-referent cognition and social self-efficacy) and their relationships to social anxiety in children and adolescents using structural equation m

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Following stressful events, there is evidence that the degree to which the event is perceived as central to one's identity and forms a reference point for the attribution of meaning to other events (i.e., "centrality of events") is associated with depression symptoms. However, these findings have primarily come from cross-sectional studies of undergraduate samples, and no past study has investigated whether centrality predicts depression over time. We sought to further examine the role of centrality of negative autobiographical events that were the content of intrusi

It is important for clinicians to understand how adults who stutter construct who they are, i.e. their self-identity, in order to offer personally meaningful interventions. Early research on stuttering and self-concept provided initial knowledge, but there has been a dearth of further research in this field. This article, the third in a series of papers emanating from a doctoral study, provides new insight into the configurations of self-identity formations of adults who stutter. Previous articles from the study described how 'Able' (positive self-identity) and 'DisOther' (negative self-identi

The objective of the paper is the presentation of ideas on human sexuality development, disorders concerning this area, particularly transsexualism, homosexualism and social stigmatization of homosexuals with its consequences. Symptoms reported and identified by adolescents such as sexual identity disorder, can masque a different problem, for instance lack of self-acceptance of homosexual orientation in a person from a conservative environment. The presented case study illustrates this problem.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between internalization of negative weight-based stereotypes and indices of eating behaviors and emotional well-being in a sample of overweight and obese women.
RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURES: The sample was comprised of 1013 women who belonged to a national, non-profit weight loss organization. Participants completed an on-line battery of self-report questionnaires measuring frequency of weight stigmatization and coping responses to deal with bias and symptoms of depression and self-esteem, attitudes about weight and obesity, and binge eating b

Currently little research exists examining the theoretical underpinnings of self-mutilation (SM) in community samples of adolescents. Two models, the hostility and anxiety reduction models, were simultaneously tested in order to determine whether SM in adolescence was characterized by greater feelings of anxiety and hostility. Four hundred and forty students were screened for the presence of SM. Sixty-one students who indicated that they hurt themselves as well as a comparison group of non-SM students completed the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ), the Beck Anxiety Inv

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a useful paradigm for many progressive disabling neurological disorders and serves as a particularly opposite model for the study of patients' responses to progressive and irreversible disability. We studied the progression of disability and the patients' perception of their health in a group of MND patients (n = 14) for 6 months from diagnosis or soon after. A comparison group of similar age, gender ratio and initial disability on Barthel index were Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, admitted because of poor response to outpatient drug therapy and increasing dis
