Living with pulmonary fibrosis: how affected people experience disease-related information, health services and self-management strategies.

INTRODUCTION: People with pulmonary fibrosis (PF) experience gaps in care, educational resources and self-management strategies throughout their journey. We sought to identify gaps in care and information, determine essential information, examine sources of information and assess preferred modes of delivery for patient education and self-management (PESM) resources and interventions. METHODS: In this qualitative study, we conducted interviews with people with PF using predefined, literature-based categories ("staying well with PF", "keeping fit & strong with PF", "using oxygen therapy", sympt…

Self-management support for people with non-specific low back pain: a qualitative survey among Italian physiotherapists.

BACKGROUND: Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) is the leading cause of global disability, and self-management is considered a key component of care. However, physiotherapists' approaches to supporting self-management can be improved. OBJECTIVE: To explore how Italian physiotherapists conceptualize and enact self-management support for non-specific low back pain, and to describe perceived barriers and enablers to its implementation in routine practice. METHODS: An online SurveyMonkey questionnaire was administered in February 2024 to assess Italian physiotherapists' knowledge and experience w…

Awareness of heart failure, blood pressure management and self-efficacy: The Research Goes Red for Women Registry.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is increasing in the United States, and awareness is needed for prevention. Hypertension is the leading cause of HF, and adherence to antihypertensive medication is critical for reducing HF risk. Self-efficacy positively influences health-promoting behaviors. OBJECTIVES: Assess HF awareness, test associations with antihypertensive medication adherence, and self-efficacy for managing chronic conditions. DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional, observational survey research study. METHODS: We leveraged data from participants enrolled in the American Heart Associa

Patients' self-management during the long recovery period affects this outcome. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore patients' self-management status, facilitators, and impediments in the postoperative period and to provide a reference for developing a postoperative self-management intervention program. METHODS: Patients who underwent hair transplantation for androgenetic alopecia were selected using purposive sampling. They were interviewed using one-to-one…

Pilot study of a telehealth intervention for personalized self-management for eating symptoms after gastroesophageal cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Following gastric and esophageal cancer surgery, patients often experience significant, prolonged eating-related symptoms. One promising approach to help patients improve their eating-related quality of life (QOL) is through self-management coaching to aid in diet modification. We performed a randomized pilot study of a nutritionist-led telehealth intervention for the self-management of eating after gastroesophageal cancer surgery. METHODS: Patients who were within 30 days of resuming oral intake after undergoing surgery for gastric and/or esophageal cancer were con…

Self-management needs, strategies and support for sickle cell disease in developing countries: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) poses a significant global health burden, particularly affecting individuals in developing countries with constrained healthcare resources. While research on self-management in the context of SCD is emerging, it has predominantly focused on primary studies, and there is a notable dearth of evidence synthesis on SCD self-management in developing countries. This scoping review aims to identify and map self-management needs of individuals living with SCD, the strategies they employed to meet those needs, and the support systems available to them. METHODS A…

Pain Self-Management with Inhaled Methoxyflurane by Emergency Department Trauma Patients: A Prospective, Interventional, Single-Center Study.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to overcrowding in many emergency departments (EDs). The present single-center, prospective, interventional study (conducted at Bichat University Medical Center (Paris, France)) was designed to assess the impact of self-administered, inhaled, low-dose methoxyflurane on trauma pain in a pre-ED fast-track zone dedicated to the management of lower-acuity non-COVID-19 patients. In the first phase of the study, the control group consisted of patients with mild-to-moderate trauma pain, for whom the triage nurse initiated pain management (based

Effects of a 12-Session Symptom Self-Management Course on Forensic Psychiatric Inpatients' Auditory Hallucinations and Anxiety.

The purpose of this clinical dissemination project was to evaluate changes in intensity of unpleasant auditory hallucinations (AH) and level of anxiety after forensic psychiatric inpatients attended an evidence-based symptom self-management course. The course was taught twice to patients with schizophrenic disorders. Data were collected using five self-rating measures. Seventy percent of participants reported reduced AH and anxiety; 100% reported helpfulness of being with others with similar symptoms; 90% would recommend the course to others. The course facilitator reported: improved communica…

The smallest worthwhile change on function from a self-management intervention for non-persistent low back pain.

PURPOSE: To determine: (1) the smallest change in function patients would need to see following a self-management intervention for low back pain (LBP) to consider it worthwhile; (2) the association between patient-related factors and the magnitude of the smallest worthwhile change. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 212 participants of the TEXT4myBACK randomised trial was conducted. At baseline, participants nominated the smallest change in function (0-30 scale) following a self-management program they would need to reach to consider it worthwhile. A multivariate regression model estimate…

Relationships Among Demographic Factors, Stigma, Social Support, and Self-Management in Individuals With Bipolar Disorder in Remission.

The current cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the extent to which demographic characteristics, stigma, and social support impact the self-management abilities of individuals with bipolar disorder in remission. Participants (N = 114) completed a demographic questionnaire, Self-Stigma Scale-Short Form, Social Support Rating Scale, and Self-Management Scale for Patients With Bipolar Disorder. Mean scores were 60.65 (SD = 10.42) for self-management, 35.76 (SD = 7.14) for social support, and 21.38 (SD = 5.06) for stigma. In the univariate analysis, age, educational level, method of payment…

Promoting benzodiazepine cessation through an electronically-delivered patient self-management intervention (EMPOWER-ED): Randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Long-term benzodiazepine dependence carries significant health risks which might be reduced with low-cost patient self-management interventions. A booklet version of one such intervention (Eliminating Medications Through Patient Ownership of End Results; EMPOWER) proved effective in a Canadian clinical trial with older adults. Digitizing such an intervention for electronic delivery and tailoring it to different populations could expand its reach. Accordingly, this article describes the protocol for a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of an electronically-deliver…

Pain, depressive symptoms, and self-efficacy for pain management: examination in African-American women with breast cancer.

PURPOSE: African-American women with breast cancer face significant disparities, including high levels of pain. Depressive symptoms and self-efficacy for pain management impact how women with breast cancer manage pain, yet little is known about how these variables relate to pain specifically for African-American women with breast cancer. METHODS: Baseline linear regression analyses were conducted using a sample of women (n = 98) with stage I-III breast cancer identifying as Black or African-American who were part of a larger intervention trial. Linear regressions explored the effect of depres
