Objective: Primary high risk human papilloma virus (hrHPV) testing is recommended as first-line screening for cervical cancer. Testing involves either a clinician-collected or a self-collected cervicovaginal swab. This study examines concordance between methods of collection of primary HPV testing. Methods: Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and Cochrane were searched for relevant studies on self-collected and clinician-collected primary HPV testing published before December 31, 2022. English-language studies for primary HPV testing of average-risk patients were included. Studies conducted in screenin

Background: National guidelines recommend Papanicolaou (Pap) testing and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for cervical cancer prevention; however, certain subgroups may be at risk for underutilization. Prior studies have identified motherhood as a predictor of health outcomes, but this research has not been extended to cervical cancer prevention. Informed by the Health Belief Model, we explored the relationship between motherhood, health beliefs, and Pap testing and HPV vaccination. Methods: This study used an observational, cross-sectional design. Participants assigned female at birth (

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) disproportionately affect adolescents and young adults (AYAs), yet testing rates in this group remain low. STI self-collection kits may potentially increase testing uptake. We sought to characterize barriers to using self-collection kits among AYAs.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined preferences and barriers related to STI self-collection kits among 445 sexually active AYAs aged 15-24 years across high STI incidence counties in the United States (U.S.). Data was collected via social media recruitment and analyzed using descriptive a

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Patient-reported penicillin allergies are often unreliable and can result in unnecessary changes in antibiotic therapy. Although penicillin allergy skin testing is commonly performed in allergy clinics, it has not been used in emergency departments (EDs) to verify self-reported allergies. We hypothesize that ED-based testing is possible and that the false-positive rate of patients with self-reported penicillin allergy are greater than 90%.
METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study enrolled a convenience sample of ED patients with a self-reported penicillin allergy.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic germline variant (PGV) rates in cancer risk genes and their association with clinicopathologic features inform genetic testing practices for patients with prostate cancer (PCa). In this study, we determined the rate of PGVs in PCa risk genes in a real-world, diverse cohort of patients with PCa and identified clinical predictors of carrier status.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Genetic testing results for 12 PCa risk genes, along with clinical, pathologic, and family history variables, were abstracted from 1,032 patients with PCa who met NCCN genetic testing criteria in oncology

Anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) incidence is increasing globally. International consensus guidelines published in 2024 include HPV and/or cytology testing of anal swabs in those at greatest risk of ASCC. Self-collected anal swabs may be important for increasing screening uptake, but evidence is needed as to their equivalence to clinician-collected swabs. We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases for publications to 13 June 2023. Studies were included if reporting data on HPV testing, cytology testing, or acceptability, for both self- and clinician-collected anal s

AIM: Self-sampling human papillomavirus (HPV) testing has been introduced for cervical cancer screening worldwide. In Japan, there are two types (brush and sponge) of HPV self-sampling devices. However, the recommended type for cervical cancer screening remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of the HPV self-sampling device-sponge type (HSD-ST). Additionally, we aimed to examine the positive rate (sensitivity) for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2 or worse using the HSD-ST. Finally, we aimed to perform a questionnaire survey regarding the usability of the HSD-ST.

PURPOSE: Prescription opioid misuse is associated with behaviors which increase bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STD) risk among men who have sex with men (MSM). Annual syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia screening is recommended for sexually active MSM at anatomical sites of contact, regardless of condom use. We describe the prevalence of self-reported bacterial STD testing and diagnoses in the past 12 months among sexually active MSM who report prescription opioid misuse.
METHODS: We used data from the 2017 and 2018 American Men's Internet Survey to examine the prevalence of self-rep

Given the high prevalence (1 in 40) of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations among Ashkenazi Jews, population-based BRCA genetic testing in this ethnic subgroup may detect more mutation carriers. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among Orthodox Jewish women in New York City to assess breast cancer risk, genetic testing knowledge, self-efficacy, perceived breast cancer risk and worry, religious and cultural factors affecting medical decision-making. We used descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression models to identify predictors of genetic testing intention/uptake. Among evaluable res

INTRODUCTION: Thin liquids are an important part of many swallowing assessment protocols, yet little is known about self-selected sip sizes in outpatient adults nor their relationship with functional swallowing outcomes. Therefore, this quality improvement study aimed to: (1) assess the influence of testing-specific factors on the size of self-selected sips in outpatient adults; (2) examine the relationships between self-selected sip sizes, patient characteristics, and degree of swallowing impairment; and (3) evaluate the relationship between the self-selected sip sizes, swallowing safety, and

INTRODUCTION: Persistent infections with human papillomavirus (HPV) cause approximately 95% of cervical cancers. The introduction of cytology screening has, however, significantly reduced morbidity and mortality rates. More recently, HPV DNA testing has been shown to be more sensitive than traditional cytology-based testing in detecting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 2 or worse (CIN2+). Self-sampling for HPV testing offers a viable alternative to clinician-performed sampling and could potentially increase participation rates in organized screening programs. Here, we compared th

BACKGROUND: In this study, we evaluated accuracy of HPV testing on self-samples versus clinician-taken samples through the VALHUDES protocol. VALHUDES was designed as a diagnostic test accuracy study, where women referred to colposcopy collected self-samples followed by clinician-taken cervical samples.
METHODS: Four hundred eighty-five women recruited in five colposcopy clinics (median age = 40 years; IQR, 31-49) with valid results for all specimens were included in the main analysis: 230 vaginal self-samples were collected with Evalyn Brush and 255 with Qvintip. Cervical samples were taken

BACKGROUND: Self-collected vaginal sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing provides a promising alternative to physician-collected Pap smears, especially in low-resource settings. However, data on its acceptability and preferences among Filipino women remain limited. This study aimed to assess women's perceptions, experiences, willingness and preferences regarding self-collected vaginal sampling for HPV DNA testing compared with Pap smears.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 592 women. Participants underwent both physician-collected Pap smears and self-collected

OBJECTIVES: In high-income countries, a high proportion of cervical cancers is diagnosed in screening non-attendees. One approach to improve screening coverage is to offer self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing. However, especially young women are often HPV positive without having a precancerous lesion in need of treatment. To improve the rather low specificity of HPV testing additional markers such as DNA-methylation can be used. The aim of this feasibility study was to examine the performance of the methylation marker assay GynTect®, comprising six methylation markers, on dry s

OBJECTIVE: Innovative screening methods such as self-testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) may alleviate barriers to cervical cancer screening. The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine whether Appalachian Kentucky women would be amenable to self-collecting a cervico-vaginal specimen for HPV testing.
METHODS: Women aged 30-64 who were overdue for guideline-recommended cervical cancer screening were recruited from a primary care clinic in southeastern Kentucky. The women were asked to self-collect a specimen, using a cervico-vaginal brush, based on verbal and printed directions p…

Background Self-swab enhanced surveillance of respiratory pathogens is an emerging public health tool that could expand the reach of existing surveillance, providing real-time monitoring of circulating pathogens in the community. Methods We conducted a literature search using terms covering self-swabbing, respiratory infection, and surveillance. For inclusion, publications had to describe a study on the use of serial unsupervised self-swabbing for the purpose of tracking the frequency of respiratory infections in the general population. Results We found 42 publications originating from 27 uniq
