OBJECTIVES: Hyperprolactinaemia (HPRL) is a classical side effect of antipsychotic drugs primarily attributed to blockade of dopamine D2 subtype receptors in the pituitary gland. Although dopamine is considered the primary factor inhibiting prolactin release, the activity of prolactin-producing lactotrophs is also regulated by the secretagogues thyrotrophin releasing hormone, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT).

The efficacy of total parathyroidectomy was shown in 18 patients with renal hyperparathyroidism after 6-12 years period after operation. The authors accepted the total parathyroidectomy as a reasonable way for treatment of secondary hyperthyroidism in patients with long-term dialysis therapy.

For determination of sacroiliitis frequency among natives of Chukotka peninsula a cross-over epidemiological study was conducted. A total of 975 subjects aged 6 years and older were examined. 324 of them (33.2%) had low back pain. X-ray of the pelvis was made in 239 of 324 patients. It was found that sacroiliitis incidence in Chukotka natives makes up 11.3%. There were marked differences in sex distribution: in males 17.1%, in females 5.7%, RR = 3.9. On the basis of some epidemiological criteria, the work gives grounds for distinguishing the category of "new settlers" among the whole number of "newcomers". The time necessary for the social adaptation of new settlers is estimated, which makes it possible to take them into account together with permanent residents. The scheme of the division of the population according to the duration of their residence in the endemic area is proposed.

The purpose of the research is to assess the intra-environment indices in urban and rural secondary schools. In the course of special studies there was given the hygienic assessment of the climate, illumination and air quality of classrooms. In classrooms in rural schools microclimate indices were established to fail to meet hygienic requirements mainly on the temperature and humidity parameters. V. parahaemolyticus and V. alginolyticus strains isolated from patients during an outbreak of an acute enteric disease in Vladivostok in 1997 were studied. All strains were found to possess typical taxonomic signs. V. parahaemolyticus isolated from humans had direct heat stable haemolysin exotoxin. The overwhelming majority of these strains belonged to serovar O3K6. Among the cultures under study 7 phage types were determined: phage types 1, 2, 7, 10 in 8 V. parahaemolyticus strains and phage types 2, 4. 5. 7 in 5 V. alginolyticus strains. The examination of 231 rheumatic patients, 159 patients with reactive arthritis and 117 rheumatoid arthritis patients identified diagnostic titers of polyvalent antibodies to Borrelia in 6.6% of all the examinees with rheumatism, 11.9% with reactive arthritis and in 7.7% with RA. Lyme arthritis was diagnosed in 1.3% of reactive arthritis patients. To diagnose Lyme arthritis accurately, it is recommended to rest upon clinical symptoms which must be associated with high titers of IgG antibodies to Borrelia growing still higher in the follow-up period.

Clinical immunological investigation of 149 schizophrenic patients, 89 healthy donors and 38 infected patients revealed the fact of high lymphocyte reactivity in schizophrenic patients inhabitants of the city of Tomsk and Tomsk Province to the viral antigens of herpes simplex and Far-Eastern encephalitis. The course of herpes-induced immune responses was largely associated with the course of psychopathological signs. The role of immunomodulating and desensitizing effects of psychotropic therapy is discussed.

The article is devoted to the role of insertion-deletion polymorphism of -2-adrenoreceptor gene in development of hereditary disorders of cardiac conduction. We examined 71 patients with atrioventricular blocks and 92 patients with sick sinus node syndrome. Statistically significant preponderance of homozygous genotype DD of ADRA2B gene was found in both groups. Associations of alleles with male or female gender were also revealed.

Epizootological surveys on the Arctic coasts of the Russian Federation revealed 8 terrestrial andmarine mammal species that were Trichinella carriers. The infection rate varied with the animal species from 1.6 to 92.8%. Analysis of the taxonomic affiliation of Trichinella isolated from the muscles of the terrestrial and marine mammals indicated that the Trichinella species T. nativa was widespread in the arctic areas of the Russian Federation. Analysis of sequences in the Cob gene of mtDNA revealed nucleotide differences between several isolates of this species.
