BACKGROUND: Variability in methods and deficits in design have contributed to conflicting findings about adult psychosocial functioning after childhood cancer. We did a controlled study of psychosocial outcomes in adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and Wilms' tumour to address previous methods limitations.

OBJECTIVE: Hospitalization for cardiac disease is associated with an increased risk for depression, which itself confers a poorer prognosis. Few prospective studies have examined the determinants of depression after hospitalization in cardiac patients, and even fewer have examined depression within the weeks after hospital discharge. In the present study, the potential role of alexithymia in predicting the long-term treatment outcome was investigated prospectively in 30 patients with DSM-III-R somatoform disorders and anxiety disorders. Sixty-eight patients with stroke were investigated to assess their mood state. Nearly half of them were found to be depressed; according to DSM-III-R, 6 of these were diagnosed as suffering from major depression and the rest from adjustment disorder with depressive mood. A significant relationship was found between mood state on the one hand, and daily living activities and Type A behavior pattern on the other.

All suicides (n = 1397) in Finland during 1 year were studied by thorough interviews with the surviving next of kin. We included 388 suicides after which a spouse's or a cohabiting partner's subjective views of precipitant stressors in suicide process during the last 3 months and earlier in life were determined. In 82% of the cases the partner considered life events as precipitant stressors for the suicide. A decreased incidence of cancer of the prostate has been demonstrated in a cohort of 6168 chronic schizophrenic patients followed up from 1957 to 1984. Nineteen patients with trigeminal neuralgia were treated with either trigeminal ganglion glycerolysis or glycerolysis and intracranial microvascular decompression. All had a good degree of pain relief. Of those receiving glycerol alone (group A), 50% subjectively reported a mild reduction of fine tactile sensation. Because of a desire to provide the most suitable treatment for hemodialysis patients, psychological, physical and social problems influencing psychiatric conditions of the patients were studied. In a group of about 1000 patients with chronic pain, approximately 4% had pain of very prolonged duration--25 years or longer. These subjects were similar in general to other chronic pain patients but they did differ significantly in the following: a higher incidence of face and head pain, greater dependency on analgesics and sedatives, more frequent diagnoses of depression, and a greater elevation of nearly all clinical MMPI scales.
