Microbial Contamination of Gym Equipment: Diversity Patterns, Temporal Dynamics, Staphylococcus Hotspots, and Device-Level Risk Indices.

BACKGROUND: Public fitness facilities are high-contact environments that facilitate microbial transfer via shared surfaces; however, temporal dynamics and device-specific contamination patterns remain insufficiently characterized. METHODS: A repeated-measures observational study was conducted in a fitness facility over five consecutive weekdays (Monday to Friday). A total of 180 surface samples were collected from 12 gym devices, each sampled three times daily (morning, noon, and evening). Surface-associated cultivable bacteria were recovered using culture-based methods followed by MALDI-TOF

Postbiotic_Loaded Hyalurosome: Investigating Their Potential as Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Agents.

BACKGROUND: The skin microbiota supports skin health by defending against pathogens and regulating immunity, while its imbalance can lead to disorders. With rising interest in natural ingredients, postbiotics (bioactive metabolites from probiotic fermentation) are emerging as natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. AIMS: This study evaluates the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of cell-free supernatants (CFS) from four lactic acid bacteria (LAB) (Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus [LGG], Limosilactobacillus reuteri [LR], Limosilactobacillus fermentum [LF], and Weizmannia coagulans [WC

Scalp Microbiome Alterations in Androgenetic Alopecia: Patterns and Emerging Mechanistic Insights.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the most common cause of hair loss in men and women, involves progressive follicular miniaturization and reduced hair density. Emerging evidence implicates the scalp microbiome as a potential modifier of this process. Preliminary evidence suggests alterations in microbial communities in patients with AGA compared to the general population, with the most robust finding being an enrichment of Cutibacterium acnes, particularly in males. Increases in Malassezia and reductions in Lawsonella and Corynebacterium have also been described, though results are less consistent

Novel insights into the role of gut microbiota and its metabolites in diabetic chronic wounds.

Wounds in patients with diabetes present significant physical and economic challenges due to impaired healing and prolonged inflammation, exacerbated by complex interactions between microbes. Especially, the development and healing of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain an urgent clinical problem. The human gut harbors a vast microbial ecosystem comprising intestinal flora and their metabolic products. Recent advancements in research have illuminated the concept of the "gut-skin axis," revealing intricate relationships between gut microbiota, microbiota-derived metabolites, and various skin dis

Genitourinary microbiota in older women: a persistent knowledge gap that limits clinical and research progress.

Genitourinary health in older women represents a poorly recognized clinical burden, marked by a high prevalence of conditions such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and recurrent urinary tract infection. Current management strategies are largely extrapolated from reproductive-aged populations, overlooking important differences in physiology, comorbidity, and environmental exposures in later life. Emerging evidence implicates the genitourinary microbiome as an important and modifiable factor of genitourinary health, yet its role in older women

Probiotic-driven microbiome remodeling is associated with coordinated immune and metabolic responses, improving growth and disease resistance in farmed tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis).

In flatfish aquaculture, labour-intensive tank cleaning represents a major operational challenge, limiting sustainability due to its high labour requirements and associated costs. We tested a new semi-closed recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) protocol for Cynoglossus semilaevis (tongue sole), replacing manual cleaning with post-feeding water exchange (80% drained) and probiotic application. Compared with control groups, the probiotic-water exchange protocol significantly improved growth (+0.18%/day) and survival (+7.9%), while shifting the gut microbiota from a Vibrio-dominated configurati

The Effect of SO2 Pulse on Synergistic Interaction of Postharvest Quality and Fungal Community During Thin-Skinned Grape Storage.

SO2 is commonly used to control postharvest grape mold, but the technology of low-residue usage and the regulatory effects on the grape microbial community are still to be explored. In this research, slow-release SO2 pads (SR) and intermittent high SO2 pluses (IHP) were adopted to treat Daqing grapes during low-temperature storage. The results showed that IHP maintained the best appearance, grape-skin integrity, and reduced the SO2 residue by 49.9% compared to SR group. Meanwhile, the grapes of IHP significantly reduced the decay, inhibited the browning and weight loss, and maintained higher f

Linking pathogen-microbiome-host interactions to explain amphibian population dynamics.

Symbiotic interactions can determine the evolutionary trajectories of host species, influencing genetic variation through selection and changes in demography. In the context of strong selective pressures such as those imposed by infectious diseases, symbionts providing defences could contribute to increase host fitness upon pathogen emergence. Here, we generated genome-wide data of an amphibian species to find evidence of evolutionary pressures driven by two skin symbionts: a batrachochytrid fungal pathogen and an antifungal bacterium. Using demographic modelling, we found evidence of decrease

Methodology for Biological Sample Collection, Processing, and Storage in the Newcastle 1000 Pregnancy Cohort: Protocol for a Longitudinal, Prospective Population-Based Study in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Research in the developmental origins of health and disease provides compelling evidence that adverse events during the first 1000 days of life from conception can impact life course health. Despite many decades of research, we still lack a complete understanding of the mechanisms underlying some of these associations. The Newcastle 1000 Study (NEW1000) is a comprehensive, prospective population-based pregnancy cohort study based in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, that will recruit pregnant women and their partners at 11-14 weeks' gestation, with assessments at 20, 28, and 3

Postmortem submersion interval prediction model based on the rat muscle microbiome.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate estimation of post-mortem submersion interval (PMSI) is a critical challenge in forensic science. The current research has largely focused on the microbial communities in the skin and gut, which are susceptible to environmental contamination, while the potential of internal tissues remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate whether the microbiome of skeletal muscle, a relatively closed ecosystem, undergoes a predictable succession following submersion in water PMSI and to evaluate its potential for building a high-precision PMSI prediction model, which is indepe

The human archaeome: methodological pitfalls and knowledge gaps.

Forty years ago, archaea were described as a separate domain of life, distinct from bacteria and eukarya. Although it is known for quite a long time that methanogenic archaea are substantial components of the human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and the oral cavity, the knowledge on the human archaeome is very limited. Various methodological problems contribute to the invisibility of the human archaeome, resulting in severe knowledge gaps and contradictory information. Similar to the bacteriome, the archaeal biogeography was found to be site-specific, forming (i) the thaumarchaeal skin landscape

The Potential Relevance of the Microbiome to Hair Physiology and Regeneration: The Emerging Role of Metagenomics.

Human skin and hair follicles are recognized sites of microbial colonization. These microbiota help regulate host immune mechanisms via an interplay between microbes and immune cells, influencing homeostasis and inflammation. Bacteria affect immune responses by controlling the local inflammatory milieu, the breakdown of which can result in chronic inflammatory disorders. Follicular microbiome shifts described in some inflammatory cutaneous diseases suggest a link between their development or perpetuation and dysbiosis. Though the hair follicle infundibulum is an area of intense immunological i

Disordered cutaneous microbiota in systemic lupus erythematosus.

The correlation between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and microbiota colonization has been receiving much attention during recent years. Here, we screened the cutaneous bacterial spectrums of 69 SLE patients, 49 healthy controls and 20 dermatomyositis (DM) patients and identified the specific changes of cutaneous microbial composition and abundance in SLE patients. We observed the decreasing diversity in community richness and evenness and the greater heterogeneity in SLE patients compared to healthy controls, which were also different from the cutaneous microbiome of DM patients. The ski
