A 38-year old Ghanaian suddenly had the sensation of a foreign body in his right eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed a transparent worm underneath the conjunctiva. With topical anesthesia, the complete worm, 3.5 cm long, was removed surgically. A microbiological analysis at the Institute of Tropical Medicine confirmed the diagnosis of Loa Loa. Between 1978 and 1992, 5310 eyes in 4317 cases were treated by laser photocoagulation at our clinic. Argon, krypton and dye lasers with slit lamp microscope were used 7556 times for 4446 eyes. Seventeen women underwent simple penetrating keratoplasty for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy after extracapsular cataract extraction. Corneal edema occurred an average of eight months after cataract surgery (range, zero to 32 months).
