μ-Opioid Receptor (Oprm1) Copy Number Influences Nucleus Accumbens Microcircuitry and Reciprocal Social Behaviors.

The μ-opioid receptor regulates reward derived from both drug use and natural experiences, including social interaction, through actions in the nucleus accumbens. Here, we studied nucleus accumbens microcircuitry and social behavior in male and female mice with heterozygous genetic knockout of the μ-opioid receptor (Oprm1+/-). This genetic condition models the partial reduction of μ-opioid receptor signaling reported in several neuropsychiatric disorders. We first analyzed inhibitory synapses in the nucleus accumbens, using methods that differentiate between medium spiny neurons (MSNs) express

Social media use of older adults: a mini-review.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining social relationships has been defined as a core element of aging well. With a considerable amount of older adults living alone, social media provides the possibility to engage in meaningful social contact, e.g. by joining online social networks and online discussion forums. OBJECTIVE: The review encompasses current knowledge of prerequisites in social media use of older adults such as functional capacity, information and communications technology-related knowledge, and favorable attitudes towards social media. Then, the potential of social media use for clinical practi

Higher or lower? The functional anatomy of perceived allocentric social hierarchies.

The perception and judgement of social hierarchies forms an integral part of social cognition. Hierarchical judgements can be either self-referential or allocentric (pertaining to two or more external agents). In psychiatric conditions such as dissocial personality disorder and schizophrenia, the impact of hierarchies may be problematic. We sought to elucidate the brain regions involved in judging allocentric social hierarchies. Twenty-two healthy male subjects underwent three fMRI scans. During scanning, subjects answered questions concerning visually-presented target pairs of human individua

Social integration and mortality in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between social integration and mortality at the aggregate level of analysis. METHOD: The data were compiled from several Australian Bureau of Statistics documents. The unit of analysis was State (Territory)-year. The multivariate regression analysis included data from all States and the Australian Capital Territory for 1990-96. Five indicators of social integration--percentage of people living alone; divorce rate; unemployment rate; proportion of people who are discouraged job seekers; and unionization rate--were used as predictors of nine measures o

Carer quality of life and experiences of health services: a cross-sectional survey across three neurological conditions.

BACKGROUND: Neurological conditions have a substantial impact on carers, with carer well-being having been shown to be influenced by a number of demographic, patient and caregiving factors. Support given to carers can lead to better coping. This study investigated the relationship between carer well-being and experiences with health and social services. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted of 1910 (37.4%) of carers of 5109 people with motor neuron disease (MND) (n=434, 54.9%), multiple sclerosis (MS) (n=721, 30.7%) and Parkinson's disease (PD) (n=755, 38.2%). [Development of children with a high degree of risk of organic mental disorders (organic brain injuries at birth)].

The authors discuss the aftereffects of brain injuries in infancy and the relationships of these aftereffects with the social environment of a child. Examinations of the intellectual development and motoricity, carried out in 50 children, have revealed the most drastic delay of the intellectual and motor development in the children with clinically manifest injuries, living in socially unfavourable conditions. A favourable social environment promotes a compensation of benign injuries of the brain.

Distress disclosure on social media and depressive symptoms among college students: the roles of social comparison and gender.

INTRODUCTION: In contemporary society, individuals are commonly exposed to multiple pressures, under which emotional disorders occur frequently. Especially the upward trend of depressive symptoms among the young population constitutes a non-negligible public health challenge. As social media is increasingly integrated into daily life, individuals' emotional experiences strongly connect with online interactions. Thus, it is essential to investigate the relationship between the social media usage behavior of young people and their mental health conditions. METHODS: This study conducted an onlin

Validation of a novel social investigation task that may dissociate social motivation from exploratory activity.

The present series of studies provide validation of a new paradigm that uniquely combines the assessment of the propensity to engage in social investigation with measures of (nonsocial) exploratory activity in rats. Assessment of this social investigation paradigm indicated that (a) rats showed a robust preference for social investigation over nonsocial exploratory activity, (b) female rats showed a greater preference for social investigation than male rats, (c) no signs of habituation in these responses were observed when rats were tested once daily for 4 consecutive days, (d) the preference

The experiences of hospital social workers who care for homeless patients: an interpretive phenomenological analysis.

Unique challenges exist for hospital social workers tasked with the care of patients experiencing homelessness. These challenges affect patient care, impact social work practice, and emphasize the need to better understand the experience of providing services to this vulnerable population. Research is limited and focuses upon the experiences of unhoused patients and of medical management, not upon the experiences of the social workers positioned to meaningfully impact care. To address this gap, the current study utilized Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to examine the lived experie

Marine protected areas and spatial fetishism: A viewpoint on destructive fishing in coastal Tanzania.

This paper focuses on destructive fishing practices in coastal Tanzania. I argue that the dominant conservation narrative that increased capacity and 'political will' for enforcement of marine protected areas (MPAs) reflects a form of spatial fetishization, in that it overemphasizes the influence of space over social behaviour. I contend that Tanzanian MPAs offer bandage solutions to underlying structural problems that are contingent upon the inconsistent availability of social and financial resources for monitoring activities. I suggest that a paradigm shift is necessary, involving the de-ter

Adolescent mice exhibit lower reward sensitivity than adults.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence shapes adaptive adult behaviors. It is characterized by increased responsiveness to socially salient stimuli and heightened sensitivity to rewards in peer settings. The particular importance of social context during adolescence indicates that neural circuits responsible for social reward may develop along a different trajectory from those involved in non-social reward processing. However, this remains largely unexplored, as much of the existing research tends to focus on a single reward type, a specific age group of adolescents, or a single sex, thereby limiting a com

Social anxiety disorder in the West and in the East.

BACKGROUND: Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in epidemiological surveys, concepts of social anxiety have varied from time to time and place to place. In recent years, however, similar assessments and treatments have been utilized across the world. METHODS: In this paper, current concepts of SAD in the West and the partially related condition known as taijin kyofusho (TKS) in the East are summarized, and trials of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that have been undertaken in both the United States/Europe and in Japan for s
