Who Tweets About Diabetic Foot on Twitter and Which Tweets Are More Attractive?

Diabetic foot is a serious problem for health care systems. Twitter can provide communication between people and it might be an informative tool for health care management. The purpose of this study is detecting the people or organizations that tweet about diabetic foot and analyze the interactions of these tweets on Twitter. All tweets containing the keyword "diabetic foot" in April 2019 were collected. The users were separated into 7 groups: patients with diabetes, health care providers, nongovernmental organizations, information sites and communication media, private companies, medical stud

Overlapping genetic and environmental influences among men's alcohol consumption and problems, romantic quality and social support.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption and problems are associated with interpersonal difficulties. We used a twin design to assess in men the degree to which genetic or environmental influences contributed to the covariance between alcohol consumption and problems, romantic quality and social support. METHOD: The sample included adult male-male twin pairs (697 monozygotic and 487 dizygotic) for whom there were interview-based data on: alcohol consumption (average monthly alcohol consumption in the past year); alcohol problems (lifetime alcohol dependence symptoms); romantic conflict and warmth; fri

Disruption of ultrasonic vocalizations with systemic administration of the non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist MK-801 in adult male mice.

OBJECTIVE: Social behavior and communication, including ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), are important for survival and reproductive success across species. N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors contribute to the neural mechanisms underlying social behavior, and pharmacological modulation of these receptors can alter both social behavior and USVs in rodents. However, the effects of NMDA receptor blockade on dyadic USVs and social approach during male-female interactions in mice remain incompletely understood. We therefore investigated the effects of systemic administration of MK-801, a noncomp

Using Social Network Analysis to Measure Social Inclusion for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

The aim of this perspective is to describe the theory and practical steps of using principles of social network analysis to help measure the social inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Social inclusion for those with disabilities has become an important area of focus of rehabilitative professionals in the past decade. Social inclusion is comprised of the domains participation and social interaction. Decreased social inclusion can negatively impact quality of life and health. Individuals with IDD continue to experience barriers to social inclusion suc…

Measuring Social Functioning in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Social functioning is a key aspect of daily life and is important to patients living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their caregivers. Many patients with CKD experience debilitating symptoms and treatment burden that can diminish their social functioning and thereby overall social health, which is the aspect of a person's well-being relating to their interactions and connections with others. In patients with CKD, symptoms (e.g., fatigue and pain), burden of ongoing treatments (including kidney replacement therapies), and medication side effects can impair social functioning. Having to ma

Combining novel trait and neurocognitive frameworks to parse heterogeneity in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) diagnosis comprises several constellations of trait, neurocognitive, and psychosocial alterations. Dimensional models of psychopathology provide new opportunities to parse heterogeneity and create a stronger interface between individual characterization and psychosocial outcomes. However, dimensional models have focused on either traits or neurocognitive features, lacking integration to capture the multifaceted nature of BPD. METHOD: We assessed 100 participants with BPD using a combination of tools stemming from trait (Alternative Model for Pe

The mediating effect of social functioning on the relationship between catastrophizing and pain among patients with chronic low back pain.

OBJECTIVE: Pain catastrophizing can be characterized as an interpersonal form of coping used to elicit support or empathy from others. Despite intentions of increasing support, catastrophizing can impair social functioning. While considerable work has addressed the relationship between catastrophizing and pain, limited empirical work has examined this relationship within a social context. First, we examined the role of catastrophizing as a potential contributor to group differences (chronic low back pain [cLBP] vs pain-free controls) in social functioning. Then we conducted a follow-up, explor

Studying and treating schizophrenia using virtual reality: a new paradigm.

Understanding schizophrenia requires consideration of patients' interactions in the social world. Misinterpretation of other peoples' behavior is a key feature of persecutory ideation. The occurrence and intensity of hallucinations is affected by the social context. Negative symptoms such as anhedonia, asociality, and blunted affect reflect difficulties in social interactions. Withdrawal and avoidance of other people is frequent in schizophrenia, leading to isolation and rumination. The use of virtual reality (VR)--interactive immersive computer environments--allows one of the key variables in…

Social support and risk of compulsory admission: part IV of the Amsterdam Study of Acute Psychiatry.

OBJECTIVE: Social support for patients with a mental illness has been associated with a lower rate of hospitalization. It is important to clarify the role played by a lack of social support as a possible predictor of emergency compulsory admission. METHODS: A random sample of 252 patients who were evaluated by two psychiatric emergency teams in Amsterdam from September 2004 to September 2006 were interviewed approximately one month later about their social networks and social interactions. The number of emergency compulsory admissions was recorded for 244 patients during a two-year follow-up …

Air pollution, social engagement, and depression in older adults: Results from a Swedish population-based cohort study.

Although emerging research has investigated the relationship between outdoor air pollution and depression risk in older adults, the results remain inconclusive. We aimed to determine the relationship between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and depression among older adults and explore whether active social engagement may modify this association. At baseline (2001-2004), 2812 depression-free older adults from Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K) were included. SNAC-K is a longitudinal population-based cohort in Stockholm, Sweden. Incident depression cases

I Have a Fear of Negative Evaluation, Get Me Out of Here! Examining Latent Constructs of Social Anxiety and Autistic Traits in Neurotypical and Autistic Young People.

Understanding shared and unique constructs underlying social communication difficulties in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) can address potential diagnostic overshadowing when evaluating SAD in the context of autism. Using self-report measures, factor analyses examined constructs underlying autistic traits, social anxiety, internalising symptoms and wellbeing amongst 267 neurotypical (17-19 years) and 145 autistic (15-22 years) students in the UK. Shared constructs across measures assessed general social communication competency (e.g., social distress in new sit

Appreciation of Social Experiences and Solitude in Everyday Life: The SOcial Experiences' daiLy Occurrence Scale (SOLO).

While social interactions and actively chosen solitude both contribute to well-being, existing measures focus solely on one dimension. We developed the SOcial experiences' daiLy Occurrence (SOLO) scale-a brief end-of-day diary measure capturing enjoyment of social interactions (including brief encounters with "weak ties") and solitude experiences. Two scale development and validation studies were conducted: single-day (N = 203) and 14-day (N = 75) assessments. The final SOLO consists of 13 items forming two scales, the Social Interaction subscale and the Solitude subscale. Both scales demonstr…

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy improves social behaviors in obese, male mice.

Bariatric surgery is an effective intervention to treat excess weight and deteriorated metabolic health. A majority of patients further benefit from improvements of mental health and the psychosocial state. However, given the complex interplay of factors affecting sociability in humans, the corresponding effects of the surgery remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) on sociability and social interaction in male, obese mice. Results showed an increase in time spent in the social chamber 9 and 30-35 days post-surgery as well as increased in…

What Can Eye Movements Tell Us about Subtle Cognitive Processing Differences in Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is neurodevelopmental condition principally characterised by impairments in social interaction and communication, and repetitive behaviours and interests. This article reviews the eye movement studies designed to investigate the underlying sampling or processing differences that might account for the principal characteristics of autism. Following a brief summary of a previous review chapter by one of the authors of the current paper, a detailed review of eye movement studies investigating various aspects of processing in autism over the last decade will be presen…

Cooperative Networks: Altruism, Group Solidarity, Reciprocity, and Sanctioning in Ugandan Producer Organizations.

Repeated interaction and social networks are commonly considered viable solutions to collective action problems. This article identifies and systematically measures four general mechanisms--that is, generalized altruism, group solidarity, reciprocity, and the threat of sanctioning--and tests which of them brings about cooperation in the context of Ugandan producer organizations. Using an innovative methodological framework that combines "lab-in-the-field" experiments with survey interviews and complete social networks data, the article goes beyond the assessment of a relationship between socia
