The Degree of Permafrost Degradation Determines the Stability of Soil Organic Matter.

Global warming profoundly alters the stability of soil organic matter (SOM) in permafrost zones, yet the underlying mechanisms governing SOM stability in permafrost landscapes at different stages of degradation remain unclear. This study utilised soil samples from the 0-50 cm layer collected from both continuous and isolated patches permafrost zones in the Daxing'an Mountains for laboratory incubation experiments at constant temperatures of 5 and 15 °C. The results for SOC, Fe and Al oxide content, δ 13C and MBC indicate that SOM in isolated patchy permafrost possesses greater bioavailability …

Bacillus and related genera in sustainable agriculture and their effectiveness for soil health.

Rising global demand for food has led to excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, increasing yields but damaging soils, biodiversity, and microbial communities. Alternatives such as the application of beneficial bacteria could restore diminished soil health and maintain productivity without these long-term costs. Bacillus species and related genera, such as Paenibacillus and Priestia, combine several useful traits, including phosphorus solubilization, nitrogen fixation, production of growth hormones, enzyme release, and generation of antimicrobial compounds. These abilities improv…

Changes in Soil Bacteriobiome in Response to Organic Amendments and Cd2+ Stress.

Cadmium contamination of soils poses a global threat to food security and ecosystem stability. Soil bacteria play a key role in mitigating Cd-induced stress, and their adaptive capabilities can be modulated by the application of organic amendments such as compost, fermented bark, or preparations containing humic acid. This article presents the results of studies on soil bacterial communities using culture-dependent and next-generation sequencing approaches. Based on the obtained data, colony development indices and ecophysiological diversity indices were determined for organotrophic bacteria a…

The Release and Transformation of Sb and As Induced by Microorganisms in Antimony Smelting Soil.

Mining and smelting activities have accelerated the release of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) into the environment, resulting in high ecological risks. Microorganisms are considered key drivers of Sb and As cycling. However, their effects on Sb/As transformation in antimony smelting soils remain poorly understood. In this study, an indigenous microbial consortium capable of oxidizing both Sb and As was obtained from antimony smelting soil and used to investigate the interactions between microorganisms and Sb-As co-contaminated soils. The results showed that the functional microbial consortium …

Reproductive effects of the insecticide acephate on a springtail and an enchytraeid in a subtropical soil.

The widespread use of acephate, a common insecticide, raises concerns about its potential impacts on nontarget soil organisms. This study investigated the chronic effects of acephate on the reproduction of two key soil fauna species, the springtail Folsomia candida and the enchytraeid Enchytraeus crypticus. We exposed these organisms to acephate in both natural Cambisol soil and tropical artificial soil (TAS) to assess potential impacts under different environmental conditions. Our results revealed significant reductions in reproduction for both species, with effects ranging from 38% to 49% (b…

Functional metagenomics reveals novel antibiotic resistomes in polar soils.

Using a robust functional metagenomics approach, we demonstrated that polar environments are important reservoirs of novel antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). DNA was initially extracted from cultured bacterial consortia in the polar soils and recombined into plasmid vectors and then transformed into Escherichia coli (E. coli) for the subsequent screening of antibiotic resistance. Consequently, we identified 671 novel polar ARGs with experimentally verified resistance against multiple clinical antibiotics (cefotaxime, folate synthesis inhibitors, and clindamycin). Bioinformatics analysis revea…

Development and In-Field Validation of an Autonomous Soil Mechanical Resistance Sensor.

Soil compaction is a widespread problem, leading to soil degradation, yield losses, and adverse environmental impacts. Nowadays, various measurement methods exist to assess and map soil compaction, with vertical cone penetration resistance measurements being one of the most commonly used. This method is easy, rapid, inexpensive, and generally accepted. However, manual penetration resistance measurements are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often less accurate due to inconsistent penetration speed. To address these limitations, an automated penetrometer was developed and integrated on an au…

Characterization of carotenoid production and antioxidant capacity in an Egyptian soil bacterium.

Bacterial carotenoids are of significant industrial interest due to their bioactive properties. This study aimed to isolate carotenoid-producing bacteria from Egyptian agricultural land and screen key parameters to enhance their pigment yield. The most productive isolatesse were identified as Exiguobacterium acetylicum and Arthrobacter gandavensis. A one-variable-at-a-time approach revealed that maximum carotenoid production was highly strain-specific. Following cell disruption via mild acid hydrolysis, the optimal extraction solvents were pure acetone for A. gandavensis (4.74 mg L-1) and a 1:

Key factors of mercury methylation and methylmercury accumulation in paddy soils.

Rice consumption serves as a primary pathway for human dietary exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin predominantly formed in paddy soils. Although soil physicochemical properties exert a strong influence on MeHg production and accumulation, soil heterogeneity has hindered the identification of consistent controlling factors. In this study, a systematic meta-analysis of 22 peer-reviewed datasets was conducted to evaluate environmental regulators of MeHg contamination in paddy soils, with a specific distinction made between sites located within and outside Hg mining areas. The re…

Can lettuce plants grow in saline soils supplemented with biochar?

Salt stress is presently a major environmental concern, given the huge number of soils affected by the presence of dissolved salts. Therefore, it is necessary to find solutions, preferably nature-based ones, to deal with this problem. In this study, biochar, a product made from plant biomass residues through the process of pyrolysis, was tested to alleviate salt stress on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) plants. Six different concentrations of NaCl were tested: 0, 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mM with and without the addition of 5% (w/w) biochar. Biochar ability to mitigate salinity damage was assessed…

Occurrence of Aspergillus fumigatus azole resistance in soils from Switzerland.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a fungal species causing diverse diseases in humans. The use of azoles for treatments of A. fumigatus diseases has resulted in azole resistance. Azoles are also widely used in the environment for crop protection, which resulted in azole resistance. Resistance is primarily due to mutations in cyp51A, which encodes the target protein for azoles. Here we addressed the occurrence of azole resistance in soils from a vast part of Switzerland. We aimed to associate the use of azoles in the environment with the occurrence of azole resistance. We targeted sample sites from diff…

Attenuation of Pb and Sb in shooting range soils by Fe amendments.

Lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb) contamination pose a major environmental risk at firing ranges and threaten land sustainability. Methods for the stabilization of metal (loid) contaminants are necessary to prevent off-site migration of metals in surface and ground water or from soil erosion. In the present study, two remediation treatments (ferric chloride/calcium carbonate and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)) were applied to flow-through soil columns containing four types of soils (sand, sandy loam, loamy sand, and silty loam) to study Pb and Sb behavior. Water runoff was continuously monitored …

Effect of wine pomace extract on dechlorination of chloroethenes in soil suspension.

Chloroethenes are widely used as solvent in the metal industry and the dry cleaning industry, but their spillage into soil and groundwater due to improper handling has negatively impacted human health. Bioremediation using microorganisms is one of the technologies to clean up soil and groundwater contaminated with chloroethenes. In this study, we examined the bioremediation of chloroethene-contaminated soil using wine pomace extract (WPE). WPE is a liquid containing seven major carboxylic acids and other substances extracted from grape pomace produced in winemaking. WPE clearly promoted the an…
