Intensive care unit (ICU) admission can represent a relevant physical and psychological burden in patients, leading to long-term mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study aimed to systematically assess the physical and psychiatric (particularly depressive, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress) symptoms in patients discharged from the ICU of a major University Hospital in Italy (Pisa) 6 months earlier, with particular, attention to differences between patients who developed PTSD and those who did not. The strength of this stud

The involvement of immune cells in the pathogenesis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains incompletely understood. This study aims to evaluate the causal effect of immune cells on PTSD by Mendelian randomization (MR). Datasets of 731 immune cells, numbered from GCST0001391 to GCST0002121, were obtained from European Bioinformatics Institute, and datasets of PTSD, numbered finngen_R10_F5_PTSD, were acquired from FinnGen. Single nucleotide polymorphisms meeting the criterion were screened according to the association, independence, and exclusivity hypotheses. Inverse variance weighted

INTRODUCTION: Childbirth, traditionally viewed as a natural and positive process, can become a traumatic experience when obstetric violence or disrespectful treatment occurs. This type of experience can cause symptoms consistent with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder negatively affecting maternal mental health, bonding with the newborn, and the development of the newborn.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the relationship between perceptions of inadequate treatment during childbirth and the risk of postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder at 6 months in a sample of women assessed 3 months after birth.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in later life poses a substantial burden on public health and social care systems. However, research in this population remains scarce. In this Personal View, we review the current state of research on PTSD and ageing, as presented by the On Traumatic Stress and Ageing: A Global Network task force, part of the Global Collaboration on Traumatic Stress. Evidence-based knowledge on PTSD in older (aged 60 years or older) trauma survivors was synthesised across four clinical domains: ageing mechanisms, assessment, treatment, and care. 142 publications were revi

Music therapy (MT) is implemented in healthcare settings for a range of symptoms and conditions. This systematic review provides an update of the available evidence by searching a combination of keywords related to MT, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) across four databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, PTSDpubs, Scopus) from inception to February 2025. We included randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials, quasi-experimental, cohort, observational, and pre-post longitudinal studies with at least 20 participants. Eligible participants were adults with T

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be linked to abnormalities in neural circuits that facilitate fear learning and memory processes. The precise degree to which this connection is influenced by genetic factors is still uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the genetic association between PTSD and its corresponding brain circuitry components. We conducted a meta-analysis using the summary of PTSD genome-wide association studies (GWAS) from multiple cohorts to enhance statistical power (sample size = 306,400). Based on the result, and utilizing the lifetime trauma events (LTE) trait

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent psychiatric condition linked to diminished health-related quality of life, physical difficulties, and significant socioeconomic expenses. The stellate ganglion block (SGB) approach is increasingly utilized in patients with PTSD. Due to its efficacy and the variety of treatment alternatives, there is an urgent necessity for consistent and high-quality evidence about the usefulness of this intervention. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of SGB in treating PTSD and its related symptoms.
METHODS: A systematic search

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) is associated with worse asthma outcomes in individuals exposed to the World Trade Center (WTC) site.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Do WTC workers with coexisting PTSD and asthma have a specific inflammatory pattern that underlies the relationship with increased asthma morbidity?
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We collected data on a cohort of WTC workers with asthma recruited from the WTC Health Program. Diagnosis of PTSD was ascertained with a Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders) and the severity o

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most widespread and disabling psychiatric disorders among combat veterans. Substantial interindividual variability in susceptibility to PTSD suggests the presence of different risk factors for this disorder. Twin and family studies confirm genetic factors as important risk factors for PTSD. In addition to genetic factors, epigenetic factors, especially DNA methylation, can be considered as a potential mechanism in changing the risk of PTSD. So far, many genetic and epigenetic association studies have been conducted in relation to PTSD. In gen

BACKGROUND: Cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) are increasingly being used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), despite limited evidence of their efficacy. PTSD is often comorbid with major depression, and little is known about whether comorbid depression alters the effectiveness of CBMPs.
AIMS: To document the prevalence of depression among individuals seeking CBMPs to treat PTSD and to examine whether the effectiveness of CBMPs varies by depression status.
METHOD: Data were available for 238 people with PTSD seeking CBMP treatment (5.9% of the treatment-seeking sample) an

Objective: The lack of steady-state evoked potential (SSEP) studies on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has led to undiscovered useful information about the pathophysiology of the disorder. Thus, we explored SSEP patterns in PTSD patients during a stop-signal task to disclose possible impairments in these informative brain potentials. Method : 25 adult patients with PTSD and 25 healthy adults participated in this research. Subjects were assessed with electroencephalography while the tone signal stimuli at 40 Hz were used to evoke SSEPs and subjects performed a stop-signal task. The amplit

Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have associated intronic variants in PDE4B, encoding cAMP-specific phosphodiesterase-4B (PDE4B), with increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as schizophrenia and substance use disorders that are often comorbid with it. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms of genetic risk involving PDE4B are poorly understood. To examine the effects of PDE4B variation on phenotypes with translational relevance to psychiatric disorders, we focused on PDE4B missense variant M220T, which is present in the human genome as rare codi

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a multifaceted psychiatric disorder triggered by traumatic events, leading to prolonged psychological distress and varied symptoms. Rat models have been extensively used to explore the biological, behavioral, and neurochemical underpinnings of PTSD. This review critically examines the strengths and limitations of commonly used rat models, such as single prolonged stress (SPS), stress-re-stress (S-R), and predator-based paradigms, in replicating human PTSD pathology. While these models provide valuable insights into neuroendocrine responses, genetic pred

BACKGROUND: Autistic traits (AT) seem to be particularly frequent among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Moreover, the autism spectrum is considered a vulnerability factor for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, increasing the vulnerability of BPD subjects toward the development of a stress-related disorder.
AIM: The study aimed to investigate the association between AT and trauma-related symptoms in a clinical sample of patients with BPD.
METHODS: A total of 48 patients with a clinical diagnosis of BPD and 52 healthy control (HC) subjects w

Trauma exposure may precipitate a cascade of plastic modifications within the intrinsic activity of brain regions, but it remains unclear which regions could be responsible for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder based on intrinsic activity. To elucidate trauma-related and post-traumatic stress disorder-related alterations in cortical intrinsic activity at the whole-brain level, we recruited 47 survivors diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, 64 trauma-exposed controls from a major earthquake, and 46 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All subjects were scanned with an
