Single-fiber analyses using a kinetic microphotometric method were performed on three patients with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia and proximal myopathy accompanied by a partial deficiency of cytochrome c oxidase. The large economic costs and environmental impacts of iron-chelate treatments has led to the search for alternative methods and compounds to control iron (Fe) deficiency chlorosis. We report the isolation of mitochondria from the endosperm of castor beans (Ricinus communis). This study evaluated the design of step-gradient, single-pulse, multi-pulse, and continuous injection of biodegradable EDDS ([S,S]-ethylene-diamine-disuccinic acid, under the same total dosage) and the significance of pore-water velocities during in situ soil flushing. Substance P (SP), a member of the tachykinin group of peptides, has been shown to augment the sensory discharge of the carotid body, an oxygen sensing chemoreceptor. ATP-driven, rotenone-sensitive, reverse electron transfer from succinate to acetoacetate was measured in rat liver mitochondria in the presence of cyanide. In the approach to equilibrium, the absolute ratio of the free energy change of electron transfer to that of ATP hydrolysis exceeded 1, tending towards about 1 1/4. The data support an H+/2e- stoichiometry of 5 for Site 1 as predicted by a thirteen-proton model of chemiosmotic coupling.
