A detailed case control study was carried out on 53 patients (33 males and 20 females) with histologically proven mycosis fungoides and on an age- and sex-matched control population. Possible causative factors investigated included occupation, recreation, and exposure to petrochemicals, pesticides, insecticides, and potential carcinogens. Today's fragrances are present in more than just perfumes, having become ubiquitous in skin care products such as creams, shampoos, sun tan lotion and deodorants. While aromatics can arouse the senses, aromatic compounds applied to skin can also cause allergic contact dermatitis. This article describes diagnosis, limitations of patch testing for fragrance mix 1 and fragrance mix 2, the relevance of fragrance concentration in products, use testing of common consumer products and our current recommendations in regards to the management of fragrance contact allergy.

Nevus spilus, also known as speckled lentiginous nevus, is a nevoid disorder characterized by hyperpigmented macules or papules scattered over a background of tan pigmentation. Although nevus spilus is mainly of cosmetic concern, malignant melanoma may rarely develop in the lesions. Although classically not mentioned as a hairy nevus, a few reports in literature mention overlying hypertrichosis in lesions of nevus spilus. We hereby report four cases of nevus spilus without malignant change with overlying terminal hairs that arose mainly from the background pigmented area.

A 46-yr-old male white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) died during anesthesia following agonal excitation. On postmortem, a well-demarcated 2.5-cm tan mass was identified in the right adrenal gland. Histopathology confirmed the presence of a pheochromocytoma, and elevated levels of epinephrine in serum collected shortly prior to the animal's death, as compared with sera from healthy controls, demonstrated the functional nature of the tumor. Although rare, pheochromocytoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of suspected hypertension and acute death in rhinos.

In three patients with lymphangioma of the small intestine, the preoperative diagnosis of lymphangioma was made by endoscopy with biopsy and radiology. A typical endoscopic finding was an elevated polypoid tumor, yellowish-white to tan. The surface was smooth, often with white specks, and could be impressed by touching lightly with biopsy forceps. An indirect haemagglutination test has been developed for the detection of Schistosoma bovis antibody. Fresh, formalin and glutaraldehyde fixed sheep erythrocytes as well as fresh and formalin fixed human erythrocytes were tested. Tanned glutaraldehyde fixed sheep erythrocytes sensitized with an adult worm extract were the most sensitive and remained stable for at least 8 weeks at 4 degrees C. With such cells 98% of a group of S. bovis infected cattle were positive while negative results were obtained from cattle infected with other helminths.

In this issue of Cancer Discovery, Chen and colleagues leverage single-cell RNA sequencing of neutrophils in the tumor microenvironment of colorectal cancer liver metastases to characterize neutrophil heterogeneity within the metastatic immune landscape. They show that the glucose-deprived metastatic microenvironment drives BHLHE40 upregulation in neutrophils, inducing a senescent tumor-associated neutrophil (TAN) population, TAN1, that actively promotes angiogenesis and excludes CD8+ T cells from the tumor, thereby supporting tumor growth and survival. Numerous etiologies have been suspected to lead to sterile interface keratitis after laser in situ keratomileusis. This tan interface haze with a rippled appearance has been called Sands of the Sahara. We present 2 cases in which red blood cells entered the interface after a small hemorrhage from peripheral corneal vascularization during the microkeratome pass. Although this bleeding was controlled and all visible blood cells were removed at surgery, both patients developed the appearance of a focal interface keratitis on the first postoperative day.

An experimental study of "annular scotoma" was conducted. Variations in prismatic effects at the boundary of the lens with respect to incidence were evaluated with the aid of a laser beam. The use of an arc-perimeter and an artificial aphakic eye allowed reconstruction of light beam paths from the outside to the inside of the eye. Four hundred eighty-nine patients were surveyed during the summer months to evaluate their sun-exposure habits and beliefs, and their use of sunscreens. Seventy-one percent had one or more hours of sun exposure on at least one day per week. Men had more sun exposure than women. The peculiarities of lipid peroxydation (LPO) following injection of vitamin D in high doses (10,000 U/kg) and other agents (bisphosphanates, vitamin E, nifedipin) were examined in both arterial and venous walls of rabbits. It has been shown, that tan injection of the bisphosphanates didn't influence significantly the amount of both the intermediate and the final LPO products.
