Hearing a voice in the noise: auditory hallucinations and speech perception.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been suggested that auditory hallucinations are the result of a criterion shift when deciding whether or not a meaningful signal has emerged. The approach proposes that a liberal criterion may result in increased false-positive identifications, without additional perceptual deficit. To test this hypothesis, we devised a speech discrimination task and used signal detection theory (SDT) to investigate the underlying cognitive mechanisms. METHOD: Schizophrenia patients with and without auditory hallucinations and a healthy control group completed a speech discriminati

Cognitive flexibility in phenotypes of pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians and researchers debate whether children with chronic, nonepisodic irritability should receive the diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD). To address this debate, we evaluated cognitive flexibility, or the ability to adapt to changing contingencies, in three groups of children: narrow-phenotype BD (NP-BD; full-duration manic episodes of elevated/expansive mood; N = 50; 13.1 +/- 2.9 years), severe mood dysregulation (SMD; chronic, nonepisodic irritability; N = 44; 12.2 +/- 2.1 years), and healthy controls (N = 43; 13.6 +/- 2.4 years). Cognitive flexibility is relevant to sympto

[Repetitive movements of the upper limbs: results of exposure evaluation and clinical investigation during the sorting and packaging of apples].

In the fruit industry, workers sorting and packing apples perform a job that is characterised by repetitive actions, that require them to remain in an upright position for prolonged periods of time and, occasionally, to manually lift loads of apples. The aim of the study was to detect and provide a preliminary quantification of any possible risks for the musculo-skeletal system, as well as any disorders present among the workers. A risk analysis for WMSDs was performed in an apple packing plant, using video recordings of the job cycles associated with two different tasks (semi-automatic sortin

Slow synaptic plasticity from the hippocampus underlies gradual mapping and fragmentation of novel spaces by grid cells.

Animals construct internal "cognitive maps" of the world during navigation in spatial and non-spatial domains, with grid cells in the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) playing a key role. This requires associating internal position estimates with external cues to reduce spatial uncertainty over time. However, how grid cell representations evolve in novel spaces to support map formation is unclear. To address this question, we longitudinally imaged calcium dynamics of grid cells over 10 days as mice learn operant tasks in novel virtual linear tracks. We observe that spatial tuning of grid cells is

The relationship between language and executive functions in adolescents with Down syndrome and fragile X syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS) and Down syndrome (DS) have significant and pervasive challenges in language (and more specifically grammar) and executive functions (EFs). While these aspects of development are linked in autism and developmental language disorder, there has not been an investigation into this in FXS and DS. Thus, the purpose of this study was: 1) to evaluate the feasibility of experimental tasks for language and EFs, 2) to test if there are differences in language and EFs in DS and FXS, and 3) to test if EFs are related to grammatical abilities in DS and

Mr. Grimace or Ms. Smile: does categorization affect perceptual processing in autism?

This study compared the influence of categorization on perceptual processing in adults with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and normal control participants. Participants were asked to categorize hybrid faces (composed of two overlapped faces of different spatial bandwidths) by gender and emotion. Control participants exhibited a bias for low-pass information during gender categorization and a bias for high-pass information during emotion categorization. By contrast, adults with ASD showed the same low-pass bias in both tasks. This absence of a shift in processing style in the ASD group is di

Circadian and homeostatic variation in sustained attention.

Human performance is modulated by circadian rhythms and homeostatic changes. Changes in efficiency in the performance of many tasks might be produced by variation in a basic cognitive process, such as sustained attention. This cognitive process is the capacity to respond efficiently to the environment during prolonged periods (from minutes to hours). There are three indices of sustained attention: general stability of efficiency, time on task stability, and short-term stability. The objective of this work was to analyze circadian and homeostatic influences on the indices of sustained attention

Neural correlates of prospective memory in Parkinson's disease: a high-density EEG study.

INTRODUCTION: Prospective memory (PM), the ability to remember and execute intended actions in the future, is a critical component of daily functioning and independent living, particularly in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Although PM deficits in PD have been widely documented, their underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. METHODS: This study addresses this gap by being the first to investigate the neurophysiological signatures of PM in a sample of 28 PD patients without mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 34 matched healthy controls using high-density electroenceph

Identification of key upper-limb muscles during a standardized reach-to-grasp task toward simplified clinical protocols.

INTRODUCTION: Variability in task execution, target properties, and recording procedures has limited the development of standardized upper-limb surface electromyography (sEMG) reference patterns. Establishing reproducible muscle activation profiles is essential for advancing sEMG-based assessment and motor control applications. METHODS: This study investigated the reproducibility of muscle activation during a highly standardized reach-to-grasp task performed under controlled setup conditions in twenty-seven healthy adults. Participants performed repeated executions of the task under controlle

Inverse hysteresis effects in a real and virtual environment.

In sequential, repetitive motor tasks such as opening a stack of drawers, we tend to reuse prior motor plans to reduce cognitive load. This persistence, termed motor hysteresis, has been demonstrated in discrete reaching movements but not in discrete full-body movements. If hysteresis reflects a general principle of cost reduction, it should also manifest in full-body movements. To test this, we asked participants to perform a discrete full-body posture selection task: passing through apertures of varying widths. Width was varied in ordered sequences to induce hysteresis and body rotation was

Intrinsic Functional Connectivity Network in Children with Dyslexia: An Extension Study on Novel Cognitive-Motor Training.

Objectives: Innovative, evidence-based interventions for developmental dyslexia (DD) are necessary. While traditional methods remain valuable, newer approaches, such as cognitive-motor training, show the potential to improve literacy skills for those with DD. Verbal Working Memory-Balance (VWM-B) is a novel cognitive-motor training program that has demonstrated positive effects on reading, cognitive functions, and motor skills in children with DD. This extension study explored the neural mechanisms of VWM-B through voxel-to-voxel intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) analysis in children with

Sex-dependent prefrontal cortex activation in regular cocaine users: A working memory functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Although two thirds of patients with a cocaine use disorder (CUD) are female, little is known about sex differences in the (neuro)pathology of CUD. The aim of this explorative study was to investigate sex-dependent differences in prefrontal cortex (PFC) functioning during a working memory (WM) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task in regular cocaine users (CUs), as PFC deficits are implicated in the shift from recreational cocaine use to CUD. Neural activation was measured using fMRI during a standard WM task (n-back task) in 27 male and 28 female CUs and in 26 male and 28 female n

Memory systems in schizophrenia: Modularity is preserved but deficits are generalized.

OBJECTIVE: Schizophrenia patients exhibit impaired working and episodic memory, but this may represent generalized impairment across memory modalities or performance deficits restricted to particular memory systems in subgroups of patients. Furthermore, it is unclear whether deficits are unique from those associated with other disorders. METHOD: Healthy controls (n=1101) and patients with schizophrenia (n=58), bipolar disorder (n=49) and attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder (n=46) performed 18 tasks addressing primarily verbal and spatial episodic and working memory. Compromised decision-making and increased gambling proneness following dietary serotonin depletion in rats.

Psycho-genetic studies have revealed a role for the brain serotonin system in gambling proneness and poor decision-making. We assessed whether manipulation of brain serotonin levels in rats affected performance in operant-based tasks for decision-making and gambling proneness. Male Wistar rats were exposed to an l-tryptophan (TRP) deficient diet (0.0 g/kg; T- group) or to a control, l-tryptophan containing diet (2.8 g/kg; T+ group). The same rats were tested for decision-making performance in the rodent Iowa Gambling Task (rIGT) using home-cage operant panels, and subsequently for gambling pro

The impact of context processing deficits on task-switching performance in schizophrenia.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been described as important for maintaining and implementing contextual information in the service of goal-oriented behavior. Accordingly, impairments in context processing are thought to underlie cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia, a clinical disorder that has been linked to PFC dysfunction (Servan-Schreiber et al., 1996). However, task switching, a cognitive ability linked to PFC function, has not been consistently impaired in schizophrenia. In this experiment, we assessed whether task-switching performance would be selectively impaired for patie

Spontaneous Fluctuations in the Flexible Control of Covert Attention.

UNLABELLED: Spontaneous fluctuations in cognitive flexibility are characterized by moment-to-moment changes in the efficacy of control over attentional shifts. We used fMRI to investigate the neural correlates in humans of spontaneous fluctuations in readiness to covertly shift attention between two peripheral rapid serial visual presentation streams. Target detection response time (RT) after a shift or hold of covert spatial attention served as a behavioral index of fluctuations in attentional flexibility. In particular, the cost associated with shifting attention compared with holding attent

AI agents in cancer imaging: Concepts, advances, and clinical perspectives.

Medical imaging serves as a critical source of evidence for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. However, most existing medical imaging artificial intelligence (AI) systems still operate on predefined tasks and inputs, limiting their ability to address the evolving needs of clinical practice and research. AI agents use foundation models as central engines for reasoning and orchestration. They organize analytical processes according to task objectives, invoke external tools and data resources, and adapt subsequent actions based on intermediate results. They may therefore facilitate a shi

Exploring semantic grounding in the posterior parietal cortex.

This study examines the evolving perspective on semantic processing, which has shifted from the traditional view of an isolated semantic memory system to one that recognizes the involvement of dynamic, distributed neural networks. Recent evidence supports the hypothesis that semantic processing engages both modality-specific and multimodal regions, with the latter serving as integrative "semantic hubs." In this context, our research focuses on the posterior parietal cortices (PPC) and their role in processing space-related semantics. We utilized a low-frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic

The role of prediction and visual tracking strategies during manual interception: An exploration of individual differences.

The interception (or avoidance) of moving objects is a common component of various daily living tasks; however, it remains unclear whether precise alignment of foveal vision with a target is important for motor performance. Furthermore, there has also been little examination of individual differences in visual tracking strategy and the use of anticipatory gaze adjustments. We examined the importance of in-flight tracking and predictive visual behaviors using a virtual reality environment that required participants (n = 41) to intercept tennis balls projected from one of two possible locations.
