The opportunities for photovoltaic (PV) solar energy conversion are reviewed in the context of projected world energy demands for the twenty-first century. Conventional single-crystal silicon solar cells are facing increasingly strong competition from thin-film solar cells based primarily on polycrystalline absorber materials, such as cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS). However, if PVs are to make a significant contribution to satisfy global energy requirements, issues of sustainability and cost will need to be addressed with increased urgency. There is a clea

AIM: Toxicity of nanoparticles developed for biomedical applications is extensively debated as no uniform guidelines are available for studying nanomaterial safety, resulting in conflicting data obtained from different cell types. This study demonstrates the varied toxicity of a selected type of nanoparticle, cadmium telluride quantum dots (QDs), in three increasingly complex cell models of the peripheral nervous system.
MATERIALS & METHODS: QD-induced cytotoxicity was assessed via cell viability assays and biomarkers of subcellular damage in PC12 cells and mixed primary dispersed dorsal root

Recent reports underline the potential environmental and public health risks linked to the "nano" revolution, yet little is known regarding the environmental fate and impacts of most nanomaterials following release in natural soils and groundwaters. Quantum dots (QDs) are one example of engineered nanomaterials that have been demonstrated to exhibit cytotoxic effects; hence the fate of this material in aqueous environments is of particular interest. In this study, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) was used to examine the interaction of a commercially available carboxyl terminated CdTe QD wit

Two serial Dy(3+)-doped and Dy(3+), Tm(3+)-codoped (100-x)(0.8GeS(2).0.2Ga(2)S(3)).xCdI(2) (0<or=x<or=20) chalcohalide glasses were prepared and characterized. By analyzing the absorption and emission measurements of the two serial chalcohalide glasses with the Judd-Ofelt analysis, we were able to calculate its Judd-Ofelt strength parameters Omega t (t = 2, 4, 6), transition probabilities, exited state lifetimes, branching ratios, and emission cross-sections. In the Dy(3+)-doped glasses, increase of CdI(2) had positive effect up to 1330 nm fluorescence and the emission cross section (sigma emi

Highly photoluminescent glass was prepared by embedding water-soluble nanocrystals in a glass matrix using a novel sol-gel process. Thiol-stabilized CdTe nanocrystals and aminopropyltrimethoxysilane were found to be the best combination in the preparation. The synthesis process had to be optimized to avoid nanocrystal agglomeration. The nanocrystals thus embedded in the glass matrix did not show any deterioration of the surface condition. The obtained glass combines excellent optical properties of nanocrystals with the high stability of glass; it emits light of various colors with narrow emiss

A novel dual-mode detection method for microRNA-21 was developed. Photoluminescent (PL) and multiphonon resonant Raman scattering (MRRS) techniques were combined by using ZnTe nanoparticles as signal probes for reliable detection. The catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) strategy was integrated with superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticle clusters (NCs) to enhance sensitivity. A remarkable detection sensitivity was achieved, with an ultralow limit of detection (LOD) of 310 aM for PL and 460 aM for MRRS. A wide detection range spanning from 500 aM to 100 nM for PL and 500 aM to 10 nM for MRRS was demo

PURPOSE: Radiolabeled graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets has been one of the most extensively studied nanoplatform for in vivo radioisotope delivery. Herein, we describe the functionalization of the surface of GO nanosheets with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles, cysteine amino acid as an interface ligand, and cadmium telluride quantum dots.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To enable In vivo PET imaging, the GO@Fe3O4-cys-CdTe QDs were labeled with 68Ga to yield [68Ga] Ga-Go@ Fe3O4-Cys-CdTe QDs. Furthermore, serum stability tests were performed and the biological behavior of the nanocomposite was evaluated in ra

A dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensor (CDs@CdTe@MIP) with a self-calibration function was successfully constructed for AMO detection. In the CDs@CdTe@MIP system, non-imprinted polymer-coated CDs and molecule-imprinted polymer-coated CdTe quantum dots were used as the reference signal and response elements, respectively. The added AMO quenched the fluorescence of the CdTe quantum dots, whereas the fluorescence intensity of the CDs remained almost unchanged. The AMO concentration was monitored using the fluorescence intensity ratio (log(I647/I465)0/(I647/I465)) to reduce interference f

This paper aimed to investigate the role of surface modification on the potential interaction between CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and ABC transporters in doxorubicin-resistant lung cancer (A549/DOX) cells. For this purpose, CdTe QDs modified with -glutathione (GSH), -carboxy (COOH), and -amino (NH2) were applied, with the former two QDs exhibiting negative potentials and the latter ones being positive. All the three QDs reduced cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner, with NH2-CdTe QDs being more toxic. Such phenomena might be due to the adherence of NH2-CdTe QDs to negative cell membra

Molecular tags such as fluorophores are increasingly being replaced with nanoparticles thanks to their superior optical properties, substantial chemical stability, and stability against photobleaching. Herein, we innovatively constructed a new ratiometric fluorescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (RF-ELISA) for the screening of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in early hepatocellular carcinoma in vitro diagnostics using carbon dots@SiO2@CdTe quantum dots (CDs@SiO2@CdTe QDs). Carbon dots with blue fluorescence were initially encapsulated into SiO2 nanospheres through the typical Stöber method. Ther

A fluorescent probe has been developed for tetra bromo bisphenol A (TBBPA) detection based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) combined with wrinkled silica nanoparticles (WSNs) and CdTe quantum dot (QD) hybrid particles. The WSNs with large pore sizes were employed as a structural support platform for QD embedding, and MIPs were synthesized on the surface of QD-embedded WSNs. The synthetic procedure was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential an

Mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) capped CdTe quantum dots (MPA-CdTe QDs) were synthesized in aqueous medium by hydrothermal method, which modified by Fe3+ could be used as a fluorescent probe to detect ascorbic acid (AA). MPA-CdTe QDs fluorescence probe could be used as successive sensor for metal ions and AA with "on-off-on" process. The fluorescence of QDs was quenched after adding Fe3+ to MPA-CdTe QDs. Then, the fluorescence of the Fe3+@MPA-CdTe QDs can be sensitively turned on by AA to give an "on-off-on" fluorescence response according to the oxidation-reduction between Fe3+ and AA. There was

Recent studies reveal a great value of interleukin-8 (IL-8), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, as a potent biomarker for early diagnosis of oral cancer. Herein, a new electrochemical method is proposed to detect IL-8 by facilely incorporating DNA-templated quantum dots (QDs). In principle, target IL-8 is first treated with the reducing agent tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP) to yield active thiols and then captured by antibody-functionalized magnetic beads (MBs). Thereafter, via the Michael addition reaction between the active thiol and maleimide group, a maleimide-modified DNA probe is linked t

Novel boronate affinity imprinted quantum dots (BA-CdTe@MIPs QDs) were used to develop a selective and sensitive fluorescent nanosensor for determination of cis-diol-containing flavonoids such as quercetin (Qu), baicalein (Bai) and luteolin (Lut) based on controllable oriented surface imprinting approach. The boronate affinity imprinted silica was used as recognition elements. Under the optimum conditions, the imprinting factor (IF) for Qu, Bai and Lut was evaluated to be 9.42, 6.58 and 10.91, respectively. The results indicated that the boronate affinity quantum dots coated with imprinted sil

Glycosylation on the cell surface contains abundant biological information, and detecting the glycan on cell surfaces can offer critical insight into biology and diseases. Here, a signal amplification strategy for the sensitive detection of glycan expression on the cell surface was proposed. In this approach, glycans on the cell surface were detected with poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-grafted silica nanosphere labeled with quantum dots (QDs) and biotin through the specific affinity reaction of avidin-biotin on the cancer cells. Glycans on the cell surface were first labeled via selective oxidiza

It is commonly true that a diluted colloidal suspension is more stable over time than a concentrated one because dilution reduces collision rates of the particles and therefore delays the formation of aggregates. However, this generalization does not apply for some engineered ligand-coated nanoparticles (NPs). We observed the opposite relationship between stability and concentration of NPs. We tested 4 different types of NPs: CdSe-11-mercaptoundecanoic acid, CdTe-polyelectrolytes, Ag-citrate, and Ag-polyvinylpyrrolidone. The results showed that dilution alone induced aggregation and subsequent

The expansion of electrochemical sensors to biomedical applications at point of care requires these sensors to undergo analysis without any pretreatment or extraction. This poses a major challenge for all electrochemical sensors including electrochemiluminescent (ECL)-based sensors. ECL offers many advantages for biomedical applications; however, obtaining results from complex matrixes has proven to be a large hurdle for the application of ECL sensors within this field. This work demonstrates the potential of cathodic ECL to detect and quantify homocysteine (Hcy) with a 0.1 nM limit of detecti

A simple, high selective, ultra-sensitive and stable biosensor based on hepatitis B core antibody labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HBcAb-HRP) induced fluorescent enhancement of CdTe QDs for recognition of H2O2 have been constructed. In this assay, sulfurs in HBcAb-HRP, which possess a strong affinity towards Cd2+, can improve greatly the recombination fluorescence of CdTe QDs by creating more radiative centers at CdTe/Cd-SR complex. Then, H2O2 oxidizes Cd-S bonds in CdTe QDs to organic disulfide product (RS-SR), causing thioglycolic acid (TGA) and HBcAb-HRP detach from surface of CdTe QDs

Quantum dots (QDs) have attracted extensive attention in biomedical applications, because of their broad excitation spectra, narrow and symmetric emission peaks etc. Furthermore, near-infrared (NIR) QDs have further advantages including low autofluorescence, good tissue penetration and low phototoxicity. In this work, the electrostatic interaction and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between NIR CdTe/CdS QDs and cationic conjugated polymer (CCP) was studied for the first time. Based on the newly discovered phenomena and the result that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can efficiently quen
