Previous research with substance users has demonstrated, across a variety of psychiatric disorders, significant decreases in psychological symptoms during early substance abstinence. To build on this literature, the current study prospectively assessed trauma symptomatology over 28 days during acute and protracted cocaine and alcohol abstinence. An open randomized study was conducted to compare different treatments of alcoholism on ethanol intake, craving, and on biochemical measures of alcohol consumptions. Aim of our investigation was the analysis of the performances of chronic alcoholics under abstinence. 3 groups of 30 alcoholics were investigated after 3 weeks, 3 months and one year and compared with a group of control (n = 30). The effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in the treatment of caustic alkaline injury to the esophagus is examined. Caustic esophageal burns were produced in rats by irrigation with NaOH. Stricture formation was less frequent in animals concurrently treated with either steroids (48%) or NAC (48%) than in control animals that received only the alkaline injury (74%).
