Clinical use of optical coherence tomography to identify angiographic silent stent thrombosis.

OBJECTIVES: Patients previously treated with coronary stents may suffer an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) without any evidence of thrombus formation on coronary angiography (CAG). This may be due to partial, nonocclusive stent thrombosis with microembolization. In this paper, we illustrate possible mechanisms both with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and histology. DESIGN: We present two cases with ACS from very late stent thrombosis who have been previously treated with first-generation drug-eluting stents (DES). RESULTS: The first patient had ACS 15 months after DES implantation. The ang

Interexaminer reproducibility of optical coherence tomography for measuring the tear film meniscus.

PURPOSE: New optical coherence tomography (OCT) devices with anterior segment module are able to measure the tear meniscus height (TMH) and tear meniscus area (TMA). Since the borders of the area and the height are to be marked by an examiner, the measurements are prone to be subjective. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the interexaminer reproducibility of the tear meniscus measurements with OCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, both eyes of 300 consecutive patients with and without dry eye were studied. Following routine ophthalmologic examination, tear-film OCT

Optical coherence tomography of bilateral nanophthalmos with macular folds and high hyperopia.

Importance. There is a conflict about the content of the macular folds in nanophthalmic eyes in the literature. Our study clearly demonstrated that papillomacular folds seen in nanophthalmos or posterior microphthalmos were only composed of neurosensory retina without involvement of retinal pigment epithelium and choroid. Observations. This is a report of two consecutive nanophthalmic patients with macular folds at Maltepe University School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, from January to June 2012. Anterior segment dimensions were near normal. The axial lengths of the eyes were short

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography findings in acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis.

BACKGROUND: We describe the spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings in three patients with acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinitis (ASPPC). The SD-OCT images demonstrate the pathologic changes in ASPPC with a high level of anatomic detail and may provide information about the pathophysiology of the disease. FINDINGS: We report a series of three consecutive patients seen at the Wilmer Eye Institute in 2012 and 2013 who presented with clinical and laboratory findings consistent with a diagnosis of unilateral ASPPC. Two of the three patients had HIV co-infection

A unique stenosis in saphenous vein graft visualized by optical coherence tomography.

We present a case of a unique stenosis in a 12-year-old saphenous vein graft (SVG), to the right coronary artery, which was visualized by optical coherence tomography (OCT), before percutaneous coronary intervention. The patient was an 80-year-old man in whom the stenosis was documented by area-detector coronary computed tomography. OCT imaging demonstrated that the culprit lesion was a venous valve containing a thrombus before preintervention imaging. Coronary stenting was performed with a distal protection device, and pathologic examination of the aspirate verified the OCT findings. Coronary

In vivo detection of Hirschsprung's disease by optical coherence tomography in rats.

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a developmental intestinal obstruction, which is often diagnosed with a repeated biopsy. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, real-time imaging modality. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of diagnosis of HSCR, the targeted biopsies of suspicious tissues and the location of operative treatment using OCT. An HSCR Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat model (benzalkonium chloride-treated (BAC-treated)) was used. Colon tissues with BAC-treated and without BAC-treated were imaged using OCT. To establish OCT criteria for identification of HSCR, OCT ima

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of collagen in normal skin and skin fibrosis.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging modality that is transforming clinical diagnosis in dermatology and other medical fields. OCT provides a cross-sectional evaluation of the epidermis and dermis and allows in vivo imaging of skin collagen. Upregulated collagen content is a key feature of fibrotic skin diseases. These diseases are often managed by the practitioner's subjective assessment of disease severity and response to therapies. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the principles of OCT and present available evidence on the ability of OCT to ima
