Loss of anterior maxillary teeth always results in bone resorption and loss of interdental papillae, and the resorption makes a single tooth replacement by a dental implant very difficult. When infections have been present and the patient's history shows previous surgery at the apex of the root, bone destruction is substantial, which results in an increased resorption defect, thereby further increasing the aesthetic and prosthetic problems. This paper describes the steps necessary for implant surgery and the prosthetics; a brief summary is provided. The quality and quantity of bone, along with

Odontomas are the most common benign odontogenic tumors with a high degree of differentiation and an excellent biological behavior. Three histological types are recognised: a) ameloblastic odontoma, b) coplex odontoma and c) compound odontoma. Usually these tumors are asymptomatic and the most frequent cause of discovery is the retention or impaction of a permanent tooth. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical and radiographic features of these tumors and to determine the frequency and relation of odontomas to tooth impaction. Twenty six cases (14 males and 12 females) of histol

One reason for the mammalian clade's success is the evolutionary diversity of their teeth. In herbivores, this is represented by high-crowned teeth evolved to compensate for wear caused by dietary abrasives like phytoliths and grit. Exactly how dietary abrasives wear teeth is still not understood completely. We fed four different pelleted diets of increasing abrasiveness (L: Lucerne; G: grass; GR: grass and rice husks; GRS: grass, rice husks, and sand) to four groups of a total of 28 adult goats, all with completely erupted third molars, over a six-month period. Tooth morphology was captured b

This clinical report series describes a treatment modality involving immediately placed dental implants in maxillary lateral incisor sites using noncemented immediate provisional crowns retained with calcinable copings (prosthetic complement used in preparing the metal for the definitive prosthesis). Ten implants were placed in eight patients for the replacement of maxillary lateral incisors: two immediate and eight corresponding to cases of agenesis. All were subjected to immediate rehabilitation with provisional acrylic resin crowns in nonocclusal loading. One implant failed 3 weeks after pl

The aesthetic management of a case involving a high smile line in a patient with a cleft lip and palate can be difficult. In this report, we look at a complex case of a patient with a unilateral cleft lip and palate which required a multidisciplinary approach involving crown lengthening, extraction of a maxillary right central incisor and fabrication of a 4-unit fixed partial denture to replace this tooth and the adjacent absent maxillary right lateral incisor with use of gingival porcelain in order to improve the aesthetics of the patient's smile.

This article discusses the possible methods available for whitening of a single discolored tooth. Treatment options can vary from restorative procedures such as crowns, veneers, or bonding to more conservative bleaching treatments. The long-term success of the treatment is dictated by proper diagnosis and treatment planning. The cause and severity of the discoloration has to be carefully evaluated when planning for bleaching options. The vitality of the pulp, presence and absence of symptoms, and periapical pathoses usually determine whether an external or internal bleaching approach will be c

INTRODUCTION: Children with severe hypodontia have a substantial impairment of their dental health starting early in life. The purpose of this study was to describe types and locations of substitutes for missing teeth in patients with severe hypodontia and to compare the crown and soft tissue morphologies of orthodontic space closure, dental implants, and tooth-supported fixed dental prostheses for replacing teeth in the anterior region.
METHODS: Fifty patients missing 6 or more teeth and aged 18 years or older (mean age, 25.6 years) took part in a follow-up study. The patients were examined

Patients with Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) can present with rapid tooth loss or fractures of enamel as well as alterations in enamel thickness, color, and shape; factors that may compromise aesthetic appearance and masticatory function. The aim was to explore the experiences and perceptions of adolescents and young adults living with AI and receiving early prosthetic therapy. Seven patients with severe AI aged 16 to 23 years who underwent porcelain crown therapy participated in one-to-one individual interviews. The interviews followed a topic guide consisting of open-ended questions related to

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the main treatment for dentigerous cysts. Although the treatment concept has shifted from radical lesion removal to function‑preserving strategies, surgical trauma and related risks are still hard to avoid completely. The strategy of spontaneous fenestration may be preferred in a few dentigerous cysts in children.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old boy was referred because of the delayed eruption of a left mandibular posterior tooth. Panoramic radiographic examination revealed a well-defined radiolucent area measuring approximately 22 × 18 mm around the crown of the left m

This report describes a case of periodontitis treated with periodontal surgery incorporating autogenous bone graft and recombinant human fibroblast growth factor (rhFGF) -2. The patient was a 49-year-old woman who visited the Tokyo Dental College Suidobashi Hospital with the chief complaint of swelling in the maxillary right gingiva. Tooth #37 had been extracted 12 years earlier. An initial examination revealed 33.9% of sites with a probing depth (PD) of ≥4 mm. The prevalence of sites with bleeding on probing was 35.2%. The plaque control record (PCR) score was 51.9%. Radiographic examination

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and digital intraoral radiography for the detection of proximal caries adjacent to amalgam, e.max porcelain, and metal-ceramic restorations (MCRs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Parallel intraoral radiographs were obtained from 40 posterior teeth using PSP sensors. To obtain CBCT scans, the teeth were first radiographed alone, and were then positioned next to a tooth with an amalgam restoration, MCR, and e.max porcelain crown, and radiographed again. Two blinded observers scored radiographs using a fo

OBJECTIVES: In order to retain primary molars, eg with irreversible pulpitis or pulp necrosis, pulpectomy can be an alternative to extraction. However, reports on the success of pulpectomies in primary teeth vary widely in the literature. Thus, the objective of this study was not only to analyze the success rate of primary tooth pulpectomy 12 months posttreatment in the setting of a specialized clinic, but also to identify and analyze various factors that modify the outcome.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Between 2012 and 2018, a total of 76 dental records of the Department of Preventive and Pediatri

PURPOSE: Occlusal reduction is considered a fundamental step for providing adequate and uniform space for the ceramic prosthesis; however, a flat occlusal surface is usually found. The prosthesis design influences the resistance to deformation and the stress state within the ceramic. This finite element (FE) study analyzes the influence of changing the substructure design on the stress distribution of a metal-ceramic crown in a premolar tooth with three types of occlusal reduction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each part of three-dimensional metal ceramic complete crown models was designed according

Renewed fieldwork from 2003 through 2008 at the Australopithecus anamensis type-site of Kanapoi, Kenya, yielded nine new fossils attributable to this species. These fossils all date to between 4.195 and 4.108 million years ago. Most were recovered from the lower fluvial sequence at the site, with one from the lacustrine sequence deltaic sands that overlie the lower fluvial deposits but are still below the Kanapoi Tuff. The new specimens include a partial edentulous mandible, partial maxillary dentition, two partial mandibular dentitions, and five isolated teeth. The new Kanapoi hominin fossils

PURPOSE: Coronectomy is performed to avoid injury to the inferior alveolar nerve when mandibular third molars (M3s) in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve are indicated for extraction. Concern has been raised regarding the fate of submerged roots with exposed pulp tissue and whether this will serve as a nidus for infection. The study purpose was to answer the following clinical question: Among patients undergoing coronectomy, do those treated with concurrent root canal treatment (RCT), when compared with those not treated with RCT, have a decreased frequency of postoperative infecti
