Morphometric evaluation of alveolar bone after orthodontic treatment of multiple impacted teeth in the unilateral maxillary anterior region.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the height and thickness of alveolar bone by cone-beam computed tomography imaging after orthodontic treatment in the unilateral maxillary anterior region and speculate on reasons for the difference in alveolar bone morphology. METHODS: This study selected 11 patients (3 males and 8 females; mean age, 9.42 ± 1.45 years). Cone-beam computed tomography was performed for these 11 patients before and after treatment using Dolphin Imaging software (Dolphin Imaging and Management Solutions, Chatsworth, Calif). Labial and palatal alveolar bone thickness

Partial Extraction Therapy: A Review of Human Clinical Studies.

Partial extraction therapy (PET) is a collective concept encompassing a group of surgical techniques including socket shield, root membrane, proximal shield, pontic shield, and root submergence. PET uses the patient's own root structure to maintain blood supply derived from the periodontal ligament complex to preserve the periodontium and peri-implant tissues during restorative and implant therapy. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge regarding PET techniques and present a comprehensive evaluation of human clinical studies in the literature. Two independent reviewers conducted e

A comparative study of the effects of platelet-rich fibrin, concentrated growth factor and platelet-poor plasma on the healing of tooth extraction sockets in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Autologous platelet concentrate has been widely used to encourage the regeneration of hard and soft tissues. Up to now, there are three generations of autologous platelet concentrates. Many studies have shown that the three autologous concentrates have different effects, but the specific diversities have not been studied. The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the effects of platelet-rich fibrin, concentrated growth factor and platelet-poor plasma on the healing of tooth extraction sockets in New Zealand rabbits. METHODS: A total of 24 healthy male New Zealand white

Dimensional and histomorphometric evaluation of biomaterials used for alveolar ridge preservation: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and network meta-analysis aimed to answer to the following questions: (a) In patients undergoing alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction, which grafting material best attenuates horizontal and vertical ridge resorption, as compared to spontaneous healing?, and (b) which material(s) promotes bone formation in the extraction socket? MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MEDLINE, SCOPUS, CENTRAL, and EMBASE databases were screened in duplicate for RCTs up to March 2021. Two independent authors extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias of the included stu

Changes in alveolar process dimensions following extraction of molars with advanced periodontal disease: A clinical pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to assess the alterations of socket dimensions after a 6-month healing period following molar extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen molars were extracted due to advanced periodontitis. CBCT scans were taken immediately after extraction and once more 6 months later. Superimposition of CBCT images was used to measure the following: horizontal changes at extraction sites at three corono-apical levels (-1, -3, and -5 mm) below the bone crest, three mesio-distal levels (mesial, central, and distal), vertical changes at nine regions of t

Medial-grade calcium sulfate hemihydrate (surgiplaster) in healing of a human extraction socket--histologic observation at 3 months: a case report.

PURPOSE: Following tooth extraction, wound healing is characterized by remodeling and resorption of the alveolar bone at the extraction site. This produces reduction in ridge volume. Medical-grade calcium sulfate hemihydrate (MGCSH) has been proposed as a graft material for extraction sockets to minimize the reduction in ridge volume. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of MGCSH on the histopathologic pattern of intrasocket regenerated bone and to evaluate histologically the healed MGCSH-grafted extraction socket site at 3 months postextraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MGCSH

[Childhood hypophosphatasia: a case report due to a novel mutation].

UNLABELLED: Hypophosphatasia is characterized by defective bone mineralization associated with impaired activity of the tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) due to mutations in the TNSALP gene. We describe a child with a mutation that has not been described up to now. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old child presented with clinical symptoms of rickets and premature loss of decideous teeth. Reduced serum alkaline phosphatase activity and radiographic features led to the diagnosis of hypophosphatasia, which was confirmed by genetic investigation. The molecular study showed two missense muta

Effectiveness of a Piezoelectric-Assisted Distraction Osteogenesis Procedure for the Treatment of Ankylosed Permanent Front Teeth.

A common complication of tooth replantation after traumatic avulsion is tooth ankylosis causing dental malpositioning, partial loss of function, tipping of adjacent teeth and worsening of aesthetics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of a repositioning procedure of such ankylosed permanent front teeth by a distraction osteogenesis procedure. Five patients (mean age 13.4 years), with an ankylosed permanent front tooth in the anterior area, were enrolled in the present study. After the pre-operatory orthodontic preparation, each selected site was treated with single-tooth dento-al

Mandibular Distalisation for Tooth Wear in Patients Requiring Mandibular Protrusion for Sleep Apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Pathological tooth wear is an increasing concern and may require intervention and occlusal rehabilitation. Often the treatment includes distalisaton of the mandible to restore the dentition in centric relation. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is another condition treated my mandibular repositioning but in this case by an advancement appliance. The authors have a concern that there could be a group of patients with both conditions where distalisation for their tooth wear management would be contrary to their OSA treatment. This paper aims to look at this potential risk. METHODS: A l

Minimally invasive management of odontogenic cutaneous sinus with digitally designed endocrown: Case report with long-term follow-up.

Odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts are uncommon manifestations of chronic dental infections, often misdiagnosed due to their resemblance to dermatological lesions. They typically originate from pulpal necrosis caused by dental caries or trauma and can be effectively managed with accurate diagnosis and adequate disinfection. This case report presents the conservative management of a mandibular second molar with extensive coronal destruction and an associated cutaneous sinus tract. Given the severe loss of tooth structure, the tooth was restored with a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufa

The effect of bone defect size on the 3D accuracy of alveolar bone augmentation performed with additively manufactured patient-specific titanium mesh.

OBJECTIVE: Additively manufactured (3D-printed) titanium meshes have been adopted in the dental field as non-resorbable membranes for guided bone regeneration (GBR) surgery. However, according to previous studies, inaccuracies between planned and created bone volume and contour are common, and many reasons have been speculated to affect its accuracy. The size of the alveolar bone defect can significantly increase patient-specific titanium mesh design and surgical difficulty. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze and investigate the effect of bone defect size on the 3D accuracy of alveolar bon
